Need for speed gets "serious".....confirmed!

After playing this nonstop from like, 3pm to 3am yesterday, I'm very happy with buying it. All of the mixed opinions are understandable because it is definitely a good sim engine tied up in a flashy package with some of the usual NFS stuff we've learned to hate with the street racing games.

I'm going to make this short because I haven't played it yet today (haha, yeah, addicted)...

I don't care how perfect GT5 looks. I don't care how 100% accurate the physics are in FM3, GT5, or Shift...nothing has felt more immersive to me than this game. There's a one-make race where you drive an Elise 111R (its provided to you, even, you don't have to go buy all these) on the Aremburg (sp?) section of Nurburgring. Mind you, I previously did a hotlap challenge where I was provided a Miata, so they should feel kinda the same, right? They do in every other game. Oh boy. The Miata has nothing on the Elise for balance and composure. And as you cross into triple digits, the car is bouncing all around you, you feel the tires hopping as you make gentle bends, at 110mph the interior gets fuzzy and your peripheral vision blurs. Only what is straight ahead of you is clear. And at 135mph, not even what lies ahead is fully focused. Then your tire drops off the edge of the track, into grass, and you're suddenly sliding out of control onto walls.

Its a blast. Found a few bugs though. There's a Veyron race around the entire Ring. Its pretty much impossible to keep up and on the track. But anyway, I let everyone get ahead of me just to drive around the circuit and the top speed of the Veyron is messed up. Hits 192mph in sixth gear, shift into seventh gear and...hit 192mph. The tachometer doesn't move.

I've driven the Bugatti and man is this one difficult car to tame it's so powerful you're at speed before you know it and then you're fighting to keep it on the track. Looks like I'll be spending more time with this race

Not sure if anyone answered the controls thing - default controls are gas and brake on the triggers with shifting on the R1/L1.

Yay! Great news. Though today I could've bought it with 2 used games+19,90€ but tomorrow it's full price :( But still, thanks for the reply! I'm starting to have a hard time finding any reason for not getting this :)

For those who care, this is my setup for the G25, have fun. :)

Steering - Deadzone: 0%
Gas - Deadzone: 5%
Brakes - Deadzone: 5%
Clutch - Deadzone: 5%
Steering Sensitivity: 100%
Gas - Sensitivity: 50%
Brakes - Sensitivity: 50%
Clutch - Sensitivity: 50%
Speed dependant power steering: 0%
FFB: 8
Steering lock: 360
Reverse shifting: Off
Y-axis: Normal

I got the code for the M3, but it's tied to your account. ;)

Apparently, the game shop where I bought it had a spare pile of those preorder cards laying around and he gave them away to anybody buying the game. :)

Hmmm. I'm going to have to contact Amazon. There was a big note that you got a free car if you pre-ordered but there was nothing in the package or box. Good luck getting an answer though.

Jeff: if you're disappointed, it may be because you're not feelin' it yet! It's quite different from FC/SCC, just like FC is quite different from GT5P. It always takes a while to get dialed into the different feel ...

Just for the record, I played for a few hours this afternoon and my opinion is improving. I made some adjustments to the steering input and it feels much better and more connected now. I'm still not 100% satisfied but I'm certainly not going to return it either. I guess it's just a matter of adjusting to it. I'm enjoying it more and more each time I play.

BTW, I found an option to turn the mirror on from both bumper cam and bonnet cam. But you have to turn all of the other HUD elements on as well.

I found out a bug I think: when tuning, if I change the gears to the maximum length, leave the tuning screen and go back in, all of them are set a notch back instead of where I put them. Same for aero. Anybody else notice this?

I just picked up a copy for PS3 (gonna buy the PC version after I see what the community can do with it), lets hope I enjoy it. :D

Didn't love it at first either. I just turned down the pedal sensitivity and increased the steering response. Helped quite a bit. I started with an S14 and was dreadful at first (Pro all assists off). But, I have the hang of it now. Upgrading the brakes and tires help a TON as well. The stock tires are extremely slippery which means absolutely no trail braking, straight lines only. After upgrading the tires I could trail brake a bit, which fit my style.

Oh man, first impressions are that this isn't NFS anymore. This is a damn good sim with all the assists off.

And first race, I got exactly the same time as the guy in first. We both got a xx.400, neck in neck across the line, yet I still came in 2nd.

I'm going to be waiting to get my copy, not for any other reason than my kids want to buy it for my Birthday, so its going to be early Oct before I get to play the full thing.

Must say from what I have heard already, I can't wait.

Am I missing something or is the damage purely visual? I haven't seen any options but full damage, and I have that on. I have had some pretty viscous crashes, and was able to drive away from all of them without my car acting any differently then it did before I crashed.

Car seems to have a "stuck" oversteer angle. It's feels like a slot car.

I've experienced this too. IMHO this is where the otherwise engaging sim physics fail. I'm not bashing shift, but when everything else is going so right, something like this can frustrate:grumpy:

I'm convinced the underlying physics are capable of much more and they decided to dumb down certain paramaters. It's like they could have given us something even more hardcore then balked at the idea and "limited" them in ways to not make it too frustrating.

Yes I'm nit-picking like crazy ; )

After playing a few more games online, I'm starting to think that people with pro physics and no aids on have an advantage. I've raced 3 ranked and several unranked matches, and have smoked everyone but 1 guy off of the line. You definitely get a better take off without traction control, alot better take off, and it seems you can go through turns faster without the stability control. I can start in last in a 6 car race and easily get to the front by the first turn.

I'm also not the best driver in the world, I'm in the 3rd class silver on GT5p in here, and I have been pulling away from people non stop. The only race I haven't dominated was my last one, and it was because I didn't see someone on my inside at the spa on one of the first turns and they spun me.

This game might benefit you online in pro mode and no assists, how great would that be. I'm not positive about this, maybe I've gotten lucky and raced a bunch of first time sim style racers that thought this was another need for speed game, but most of them were at least the same level or higher then me.

What I need to do is take a few laguna laps in both modes and see. I just can't get myself to turn on the aids, and dumb down the physics.

I wondered that for a while, but on that Veyron race I mentioned I did eventually have my car pulling to the left...It was after a ridiculous amount of punting from the AI though. Props to anyone who can finish that race in higher than 16th place.

I haven't felt this at all yet. All of my cars seem perfectly capable of spinning out. I can sometimes flick them into a low-angle four-wheel-drift, if that's what you mean.

Edit: Oh, and with AWD cars, don't bother getting the "Perfect Launch". Pin the throttle and hit it from redline, you'll spin for a second, then hook up and blast forward far faster than the game's recommended launch.

I'm loving this works conversion thing they have added. Makes it alot more fun when more cars can be competitive with higher tiers. I basically turned my STi into a JGTC race car.

That would be awesome, and probably very intelligent of the design team too. It gives the people who would normally just stick with arcade style a reason to try pushing outside their comfort zone and trying the more realistic physics options.

I'm very, very glad I'm not the only one struggling with this race. My car constantly bounces everywhere, it's almost impossible to keep on the tarmac.

Yep...I've noticed its hard to keep a lot of supercars on track due to bouncing. There's a couple spots on Brands Hatch that try to bounce you off in the McLaren F1 in the F1 v. SLR race (good luck if you try winning with the SLR...).

I just got the game, and I have to say, I'm impressed. I love EVERYTHING about it, except a couple of things: it seems like the cars tend to swirl a lot, like they always want their rear-end out. Of course, this doesn't happen with FWD but it does with nearly every RWD car I've driven. I also don't like how you can't change the controls to where you can use X to accelerate, SQUARE to brake, R2 and L2 to shift up and down, etc. Other than that the game is really good. I'm currently driving with the AUTOMATIC transmission and with traction control on LOW. I need to get the hang of it. And I need to get a G25. :(

Anyway, here's a picture of my M3 E36 on the green hell

Also, if any of you guys want to play online, send me a request. I don't have any NFS friends as of now. :(

Anyway how do you upload photos? Every time I try I get "An error occurred while sending your photo to NeedForSpeed.com. Please try again." I've made an account on needforspeed.com, and the website simply refuses to load the "Update Account". Anyone else having this problem?

i got the voucher for the M3 from gamestop, and went through the process.

I redeemed the code, then it says to go to "quick race car select menu", i can't find this menu. I went to quick race, for the car options my choices where the same class or the same car. I could not find the option for "reward cars"

can anyone help?

funny you should say that because that very first lap you do at brands hatch in the m3, well when you do it the first time aids are on and i did pretty crap, so at the end it gives you a chance to turn everything off, well when i did i smoked my all aids on lap time

I've found a few bugs so far:

- In Quick Race, Drift, there's no engine sounds.

- Some races in Tier 3 have a very loud, annoying static noise during races. No other game or sets of races have this problem.

- A.I sometimes gets stuck on a wall after crashing.

- FFB randomly cuts off, however this has only happened twice.

- The wheel moves with the car on replay mode when it hits a rumble strip.

- The wheel sometimes does a full spin after a race, and when you start off the race the car will fly off to the side.

Also a few nitpicks -

- A.I is overly aggressive, annoying when you're driving a CCX at the edge with a Veyron up your trumpet.

- Oversteer seems to be locked to a degree, as somebody stated earlier.

- Menus are very slow and laggy.

- Some tracks are just epic lag, especially I found the London tracks. Having about 8 Astons crash into each other is misery.

- Driving line is rubbish.

- You have to stick to the driving line to 'master corners', even though the driving line isn't always the quickest or most logical way.

- Too many badges and things to unlock, too many numbers. So far all I know is my level, other than that the numbers mean nothing.

- No adjustable controls.

- Too many 'points'

I've found a few bugs so far:

- In Quick Race, Drift, there's no engine sounds.

Pause it, go to options>audio>turn drift music to 0. Unpause. There still won't be any. Now hit restart. 👍

Edit: Once that NFS:s subforum comes out (if it is), I'd be happy to keep a Nurburgring leaderboard. Might do up to 3 tracks if we can settle on what to keep track of.

Ah don't worry, they just happen to start working.

Is anybody else having trouble with EA right now? So far for me there's absolutely no way to complain about any of these problems, EA website won't load, EA forums won't load, NFS website won't load, basically anything to do with the EA profile won't load, etc. This also means the Photomode on PS3 is pointless. And before anyone blames my PC, I've tried from the PS3, a different computer, proxies, different browsers, the lot. On that note, can anybody else log in to any of the EA sites?

nfs.ea.com loaded up the Need For Speed page on EA.

There are actually two types of damage that can be set from the gameplay settings menu: 'visual' and 'complete' (and of course 'off).

OK... need some clarifications:

1) There's no chance at all to configure button controls?
2) I've understand that you can turn off HUD. Will turn off all those crappy badges, point bars on top, etc. (in sum... all those arcadish nonsense), from popping off while driving?
3) Are the races ridiculous short as in GT5:P (max. 5 laps), or are there more endurance races?
4)Is there a championship mode (like for example creating a GT championship that covers a series of tracks in a point system)?
5) Oversteering - last comments on that have "scared" me and can be a turn off on buying this: Are all cars really oversteering or not?
6) Complete damage mode - does it affect car handking or is just rubbish?
7) Speed blurring can be set off (as someone said earlier it could at least on PC version)?

Thanks in advance
