So I decided to buy this game considering EB Games was selling it at 50 instead of 80 bucks Canadian.
I, like probably many others, came in with the lowest of expectations. After playing it for most of the day today, I guess I can say some things in bullet form:
- Environment feels really good. Lots of variety in the locales, from the desert to the redwoods. It really just drives home how piss poor Australia was as a location for FH3, because it's all flat road. Here it's actually nice to go from the desert, to the hills, to the streets and back.
- Car list is fantastic. There's some nice variety, and especially the trucks and SUV's feel really nice to have. It's probably the best car list in an NFS game since Undercover, IMO.
- The upgrading system is bad, no doubt about it. It tries to do the RPG system like The Crew did, but it really fails because in TC, it feels like it has a point. Here, it feels as if it's to prolong the game and add a gate to events. I would have much preferred the system from 2015.
- Likewise, gating body upgrades behind tasks is also a really stupid move. Why can't Ghost simply let all of the body upgrades be unlocked right from the get go?
- The derelict system seems like a cool idea, but it just feels like Ghost once again apeing something from a much more popular game. And like in Forza Horizon, it really just feels like padding.
- Handling is so much better. The fact that you can fine tune steering and all that on the fly definitely helps. No more crabwalking!
- Why are the cops even around if they are going to be sequestered to time trials, essentially? It really just proves that Ghost hasn't been able to deliver on one of the core tenets of a modern NFS game in the three games they've made.
- Really glad that Ghost is really focusing on adding grime to the soundtrack. Probably the most amount of grime in a videogame since, what, Carbon?
Definitely, if you're comparing this game to 2015, this is such a significant leap forward that it isn't funny in the slightest. I'm having a feeling that I never had playing 2015: actual, godforsaken fun. With that in mind though, there's some noticeable problems, and a lot of it comes down to the upgrade system.
I think the best way to describe Ghost Games' tenure with NFS is that it's like DC Films. If Rivals was Man of Steel, and 2015 Batman vs. Superman, then Payback is Wonder Woman: definitely the best effort...but compared to other arcade racing games, it isn't really saying much.
Also, going to ask right now: is the Plymouth Cuda DLC or what? Because I've seen it being raced in the race league, and I know it's in the game...but it's not in any of the dealerships. I'm kind of doing a playthrough using only American vehicles, and I kind of wanted to make the Cuda the centre piece.
