Need for Speed: Rivals

Just picked this title up on the ps3,wow it's great loving the open world feeling, awesome handing and steering my only gripe is that it loves to freeze a lot :(

To fix the freezing sign out and back in again. (thanks to The Stig Farmer)
Yeah, if it's freezing upon exiting the garage, just sign out and only sign in again until you're actually driving.

Otherwise, it just likes to sieze up during gameplay, fairly normal.

I borrowed this from my brother, played it for about 30 minutes and then turned it off.

I dont know, maybe its because I spent alot of time with 60fps Battlefield 4 on the PS4 before this, but the 30fps really bothered me. Honestly, I saw nothing in the game that says its too taxing for 60fps. Traffic was sparse, background environments were sparse with low detail, road textures were average to poor. The cars were nice looking, but thats about it. No cockpit view? Why not? And with Criterion developing the game its surprising how poor the crashes play out. They're spectacular, but wonky looking and dont quite match up with what caused them.

The handling was fine for a pure arcade racer, but the open world spoils the feel for me. Maybe its just personal taste, but I really miss circuit racing in NFS. In circuit racing you can say 'thats my favorite corner' or 'Im going to try and get this corner right this time'. In openworld racing its just one generic bend after another.

I didnt like the way the racing was setup. I really miss points championships in NFS games. Just jumping in and playing a random race for a random reward doesnt seem as satisfying as progressing through a championship or something fun like a knockout mode.

I really wanted to like this game, but disappointing graphics and gameplay hurt it too much for me.

Drive Club appears to be the game NFS was 10 or so years ago. Really looking forward to that.

It's only 30fps on the PS4?

Maybe I'll skip on this then...
Correct.

Well, on last-gen consoles the graphics are the main failing. Flicker, environments not loading, awful slow-down... otherwise it's pretty damn solid game.

The method of unlocking cars is motivating - just complete the to-do-list Assignments (cops) and Speedlists (racers). It's a very good pick-up-and-play game that doesn't tie you down to big races, events and championships.

This. I thought I'd like it, as I was always hoping for an open world Hot Pursuit, but I didn't. What I found most annoying though, was that LB is an essential button on XBox 360, because without it, you can't accept challenges (if you can change the button assignment, please someone tell me how). In Most Wanted at least you could still play the game without LB, in Rivals that doesn't seem possible (if it is, someone please tell me). Overall, I wished I hadn't wasted my money.

This is what we do after the game has come out, now what?

What I would have wished for is the ability to change button assignments, or, more accurately, full compatibility with the Microsoft Wireless Speedwheel for the XBox 360. Had lots of fun playing Forza 4 and Most Wanted (2012) with the Speedwheel, but Rivals simply isn't playable with it. It's a shame really, as if it wasn't for that, I likely would have kept the game irrespective of some of its other issues. Luckily though, I was just able to return the game for a full refund! :D

Oddly enough, I now do feel like playing a round of Most Wanted (2012). :)

After playing the game for 4 day's im starting not to like it much as most wanted 2012,dunno anyone else find the screen a little busy power-ups and stuff, and the cops are starting to get on my nerves argh they never seem to bugger off hehe any tips on taking them down?mw cops where better the way you could smash into them.:)

Just outrun them, and stay in proximity to a repair shop and a hideout. At least you don't have to properly lose them to escape to a safe house like before.

Finally got the game on PS4 for Christmas yesterday and it's pretty solid so far. I'm really enjoying the new Mustang and still trying to get my head around the AllDrive system.

Need For Speed is back on track with Rivals, partly due to the fact that it plays like a NFS game should (MW2012 was the game which seemed to show us that NFS was becoming Burnout). The Criterion drifting is still present, but cars seem to have a lot more weight than the Criterion-era cars did. I'm happy with the driving, it no longer needs refinement.

The career mode is the best I've seen since Carbon. The story is great and progression has returned. The cops are the best in any NFS, hands down. I always on the edge when in a pursuit, they are aggressive and always breathe down your neck. Car customisation is lackluster, I'm glad I can put vinyls on my car for the first time in years. But the fact we can't have multiple layers really takes away from it.

Also addressing a common misconception: Criterion Games did not make NFS Rivals. EA Ghost Games did.

This. I completely agree, NFS Rivals is incredible. They're on the right track, and also the always with other people online is awesome imo, it makes for good fun!

I picked the F12 Berlinetta over the Aventador 720 but the 720 will be next purchase.
What are your thoughts between those 2. Also what cars have you been using most on the racer side?

I find the F12 to be better. I have mainly been using the SLS.

I've been toying around in Rivals now the last couple of days, and I think as a NFS game, it fits the bill this time around. the last NFS game didn't feel anything like it is supposed to be, and the "find cars to get them" gimmick was terrible.

I've done the cop career all the way now, and are 2 cars away from finishing the racing career. I used the challenger until the M3 was unlocked, then used the M3 all the way until I got the 918 spyder. Im not sure if I just should stick with the spyder, or get one of the last 3 cars when I get the cash for it (and upgrades).

The rubber banding is terrible at times, but managable. The graphics are great, at least for an early PS4 game. The rain effect on the cars in the garage really blew me away when I got the first look at it.

EDIT: Finished both careers now, the final race/interceptor events are quite easy really. In the race, the competitors was so slowed down by the cops so all I really did was dodge the spawning cop cars, and going though every service station just to refill NOS and turbo. Bought the P1, and it is a very good car. Now its just the grind to get enough SP to fully upgrade it

When compared to HP2010 (of which Rivals seems to be heavily based on), the rubber banding in this game is very minimal. In HP2010, I found certain races almost boiled down to luck because the rubber banding was so severe at times it was impossible to win sometimes because the AI drivers would pull away and stay ahead, this includes even if you had a flawless race without crashing or even slowing down (constantly on the nitro). But on the note of HP2010, I found that game more challenging partially because car choice was based on the event (if there was any choice at all at times). This is most noticeable in Rapid Response or Time Trial events, in Rivals now that you have the option of using any car you can take the fastest car for either cops or racers and gold those events by a large margin. Comparatively, although I have played through both the police and racer careers of HP2010 there are still certain events I have yet to gold where as I have gotten 100% completion in Rivals while golding every single event.

Yea I've figured it out by now, thanks though.

They never really give a very good explanation as to how to unlock it.

Just be careful though, It may get re locked after awhile and there is no way of unlocking it again.

Having online and offline merged isn't always the best idea... I just lost a 300,000 SP pursuit because a human cop got involved just while I was heavily damaged, out of shockwaves, and far from any repair shops. Of course he had EMP, and if I tried to brake and let him overshoot me he'd just clobber me. Thanks a lot, dude. I had an hour of effort in that pursuit. I probably could have found a repair shop and made it to 500 grand or more if it weren't for that guy.

I feel a bit guilty when getting those low-effort busts. However it's so satisfying :mischievous:.

Today, I was in the middle of a Rapid Response around Last Stallion and I ram headfirst into someone with another person who was in the middle of a race at high speed. He had very little health left so it was an instant bust, and it was only a 0.5 second penalty for me.

Well, I had just under half health when he spotted me - but you know everything goes wrong as soon as a player cop gets involved in a high-heat pursuit. The 15 million AI cops that are tagging along with the player will rip you to shreds while causing you to drive in slow motion, and the other player will just hang back and throw EMPs everywhere.

I think I read somewhere that if a player cop busts a player racer, they get the racer's SP... I guess a cop got very rich tonight.

No, but it makes the racer lose all his points. The only points the cop would get if it were relating to the racer's Heat Level.

e.g.
Heat Level 1 - 2,000 SP
Heat Level 2 - 4,000 SP
Heat Level 3 - 6,000 SP
Heat Level 4 - 8,000 SP
Heat Level 5 - 10,000 SP
Heat Level 6 - 12,000 SP
Heat Level 7 - 14,000 SP
Heat Level 8 - 16,000 SP
Heat Level 9 - 18,000 SP
Heat Level 10 - 20,000 SP

Is it just me or has anyone expected some new post-DLC content lately? I feel as if Ghost have already abandoned support for Rivals.

Just lost close to 400,000 SP in a pursuit that seemed to have lasted more than 15 minutes. I had a cop that was hitting me with all he had. He levelled up a lot in Overwatch as well, so I was getting a ton of extra stuff against me from there.

It would obviously have been better if I escaped, but it was still incredibly fun. I got busted less than a kilometre from the Last Stallion hideout, as well

Nice playing with ya Daniel.

However, holy crap is the cop career short. I was only at I think rank 3/4 this morning and now I've completed the story.

Also had a rather odd glitch. During the Interceptor, the last one where you have to catch Zephyr, he had gone straight ahead and went off a jump, which was on a giant cliff and so he missed. However instead of respawning back on the road, he kept swanning right at the end of the jump and falling off. I had to restart...
