McLaren’s all-new MP4-12C supercar will be lighter, greener, more efficient and more powerful than both its key rivals, the Ferrari 458 Italia and Mercedes SLS AMG, when it arrives in UK showrooms early next year.

The MP4 is now entering its final stages of development - having completed more than one million test miles on five continents - and building work is underway at the McLaren Production Centre where the car will be built from early 2011, although initial production will commence at the McLaren Technology Centre later this year.

The MP4 has been given a target price of less than £175,000, and company boss Ron Dennis has pledged that buyers will not only get the fastest car money can buy, but also the highest build quality and highest level of dealer and after sales support from any car manufacturer.

Initially 35 dealers will be set up worldwide - whittled down from an initial shortlist of 600. Cars will be available to order in two to three months time according to McLaren, which it has already had 1600 serious expressions of interest in buying the car.
MD Anthony Sheriff also stressed that McLaren has no desire to become a volume manufacturer: "We do not want the volumes of our rivals," he said, "we want exclusivity."

The MP4’s Ricardo-developed twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre 90-degree V8 engine will rev to 8500rpm, with its maximum 592bhp output arriving at 7000rpm. The peak 442lb ft of torque is available from 3000rpm, although 80 per cent is available between 2000-6500rpm. By comparison, the 458 produces 562bhp and 398lb ft and the SLS 563bhp and 479lb ft from their V8 engines.
McLaren says the car will travel from 0-124mph in less than ten seconds, and stop from 124mph in less than five seconds. It will stop from 100mph in 30 metres - or seven car lengths.

McLaren also says the MP4’s CO2 emissions will be sub-300g/km, less than the 458’s 307g/km and SLS’s 314g/km.

Power is sent to the rear wheels of through a bespoke twin-clutch seven-speed gearbox. Gears are selected using an F1-style aluminium rocker style that pivots off the centre of the steering wheel. Normal, sport and track driving modes are selectable within two different customisable configurations. H (Handling) alters the steering weight, stability control and suspension and roll stiffness while P (Powertrain) alters throttle response, engine acoustics and gearshift times and feel.

It uses a carbon composite monocoque to help keep weight to a minimum. McLaren claims the MP4 has a dry weight of less than 1300kg and lightweight materials have been used wherever possible to save weight, including the brakes, wiring and bodywork. Even with fluids on board, McLaren says the MP4 will be lighter than the 1485kg 458 and the 1620kg SLS.

At 4507mm long, 1908mm wide, 1199mm high and with a wheelbase of 2670mm, the MP4 is smaller than both of its key rivals. Despite this, McLaren claims there will be class-leading interior comfort, function and space. Interior features include a portrait 7-inch touch screen and Wi-Fi.

The two-seater has a 43:57 weight distribution. McLaren says this distribution, rather than a 50:50 one, helps reduce the understeer that’s normally associated with mid-engined cars.

Much of the design and development work has been carried out by employees from McLaren’s F1 racing team. F1 tech employed includes an electronic differential system, a brake steer system and an air brake that can be employed to increase downforce.

Its design has been aerodynamics-led, meaning the car has undergone extensive development work in McLaren’s wind tunnel, its F1 simulator and using CFD. Several electronic systems have also been passed down from the F1 team.
McLaren boss Ron Dennis also reiterated that the McLaren MP4-12C is only the first car in a range that the company plans to build. "This is the first step in a range," he said.

There has never been a doubt in my mind that this will be the king of junior supercars from a speed/handling/ride/refinement perspective, but the styling has always been a disapointment in the pictures I've seen to date.

However, in this picture it looks so much better...

It is looking like it will live up to expectations and the more I see of it the more I like the look of it. It's understated but that could work in its favour as it ages.

There quite an in depth article here with a video of Hamilton and Button testing it.

Yup Matte Black is probably my fav color... looks good on EVERY car.. :P I agree with Terronium... Pure car pr0n here!

What would Steve say?

Is it my imagination, or is that not one of the coolest engines I've ever seen?

I have a bit of a problem liking this car very much guys....and please let me say why...
:

There is only one car really to compaire this car with and its obviously the Ferrari 458...

And there lies the problem for me...

The most ultimate car evr made for me when i whas a little kid and dreaming about supercars whas something like the Mclaren F1....And there it whas suddenly!!!...the dream supercar every man/boy would love to have,or have on there wall as a poster hanging above your bed....

But whats this car all about then....

When i first saw videos of the new Ferrari i loved it....This will be the car to beat for the coming years for sure!!!....It is just perfect and "to the point" as any car can be...

But then i heard about the new Mclaren car developing.and thought....oooohhhh man,Ferrari is going to be overshadowed by this new "F1" project as several years ago!!!!

But man am i dissapointed!!!...

Yes this new Mclaren car is fantastic and should be loved...

But i whas expecting something ....something..... well like something wich would give me the same feeling when i whas a young boy and could not stop looking at the posters of the F1....But it doesn't .....it doesn't even give me a second look....its just a supercar like the Lambo's audi's porsche's ferrari's etc etc etc etc etc....

I whas really hoping for a SUUUPPEERRCCCAARR....It is ,but it also isn't for me....

Shame.....For me the F1 is still the one and only true Mclaren supercar....This car is not and won't be as good as the Ferrari 458....!!!!!

Sorry guys, but this is how i feel what i see.....if you know what i mean...

spy.

@ Spyrrari

Two things

1) It's McLaren's junior supercar, they be making a model below and above the MP4-12C

2) You're not a little kid any more so you'll never get the same feeling as you did for the F1 again :( ....mine was the Countach ;)

EDIT: Found a couple more pics of it in black for you Stotty

-> Hmm, being in a wish list mode here; what are the key difference between the XP8 (UK lic.#RX59 FPG), XP10 (UK lic. #RX59 FRC), and the radically camo'ed XP11 (UK lic. #RX59 FRD)? :dopey:   :sly:

-> I personally like the temporary tailights on the initial-spec of the XP11:

^ I don't care much about the production-spec, thats a given already. :)

Did anyone notice that the see through engine covers have been blocked off in these test cars?

I hope this car makes an appearance in GT5. And if it does I'd love to see those black test cars in the used car lot like the "black" le mans cars you could buy in GT4 :P

They've made an amazing car and given it the worst name in the entire world. "Bipper Teepee" is a better name than MP4-12C, since at least it's a name. Yes, I know it's supposed to be similar to what they call their F1 cars, but that doesn't keep it from sounding like it's a tax form.

I thought the same when they first released the official name of the car

From the video of the cars launch they made it a bit easier by referring to it as the 12C. I'm not too sure if it will be as memorable as the way other high performance manufacturers name their cars...

I hope time tells us otherwise because I really like this car :)

Number 26 is a beaut:

Hmm... testing a V12 version?

One thing strikes me about the performance figures...

With all the moaning about how McLaren has decided not to release another F1... (how's that for an iconic name? They should have called the 12C the FU. )... the 12C gets to 100 km/h faster (under 3 seconds! God bless them turbos!) and gets to 200 km/h in similar time (under 10 seconds versus 9.4), despite being heavier with similar peak power.

The only difference would be the top speed... but that's a matter of aerodynamic limitations... I'm betting the 12C has better downforce than the non-GT F1... (and the F1 GT with the longer tail didn't have the same top speed as the regular model)... and gearing.

It would be interesting to see if the upcoming high-power variant will be tested for top speed.

-

I have no doubt, however, that the 12C will be much friendlier to drive than the F1... and possibly much quicker around the racetrack than some of the "big boys" (Enzo, Carrera GT, etcetera) despite starting at a much smaller price point.

Not too sure about what McLaren are working on next. I wouldn't think they'll work on something completely different this early (they're planning a convertible of the 12C no?)

The engine cover on the pic above seems quite similar to the one on their very first test mules (here with Jay Leno on the Top Gear test track :D) - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/driving/features/article6961592.ece

A McLaren FU? Do those two letters stand for what I think they do?

McLaren MP4 configurator

Have a play at being rich :D

Button and Hamilton have already specced theirs!

McLaren have launched their online configurator for the forthcoming MP4-12C. Prospective buyers (and fantasists) can now spec the car to their liking from a comprehensive options list. The configurator will link directly to dealerships when they are appointed from May 2010.

Among the usual fare of paint finishes and option packs is what McLaren refers to as the ‘Driver Zone’ interior option. This allows the driver to trim the driver side seat, door trim and dash top to their taste, creating an asymmetrical cabin. We’re not sure of the benefits of this but then there’s no accounting for taste.

Of more interest are the performance upgrades available for the 12C. They include a lightweight sports exhaust system, carbon ceramic brakes and two lightweight forged alloy wheel options. A smattering of carbon fibre can also be specified for the door mirrors, engine bay and side-pods.

No word on prices is available through the configurator but considering the amount of carbon on offer, if you have to ask… stick it on the overdraft.

I think maybe my favorite part of this is that I am now configuring a car for McLaren in Vatican City.

I'm liking all the options though. Makes the decision tough.

Hamilton is going to be testing, or at least talking about the MP4-12c on tomorrow night's Fifth Gear episode.

Also, had a fun time playing with the configurator a few days back with a mate who is actually deciding between buying an MP4-12c or a 458. At 26 years old. Bloody bankers. :(
