NFS,FORZA and PGR-why is not GT as good as them when it comes to sound?

Why do you think PD hasn't been able to improve sound?

  • Too much attention on physics.

    Votes: 19 10.6%
  • Too much attention on graphics.

  • Ignoring the fact that sound is an essential part of any game.

Some unmodified vehicles in GT4 resembled their counterparts, but when you added exhaust then the sound became annoyingly inaccurate.

The sound in prologue is noticeably better. (At least the vette in prologue sounds like a v8).

If gt5 cuts down on unnessasary tire chirps, and includes adjustable sound options for the engine, tires, crowd, wind etc., then we'll be set.

One more thing: NO MORE ANNOYING CROWD AIR HORNS PLEASE!!!!!!

** Edit: The poll is too biased for me to vote. It needs more options.

I dunno man did you ever get around to putting a racing exhaust on the M5 in GT4, I couldn't find any video evidence but it's pretty sweet...

Yeah they even had a feature on how they did the sound back when they were doing Forza 2. I was following that game everyday for news and updates like I'm now doing with GT5, Shift and FM3.

They record in 500rpm increments with various microphones around the car, it's then put into Pro Tools which is a very popular sound editor among professionals for those who don't know, then it's processed by a sound engineer and finally based onto the physics engine. PD, learn from Turn10. You might have them beat on graphics but T10 have taken the cake in the sound department.

The sound in GT is laugahable at best. There are some cars which sound great but most of them sound terrible. Nothing like they do in real life. If Gt5:Pro is any indication i assume that gt5 will be more of the same regarding the sounds of the vehicles.

I truly believe that the eye candy factor PD is putting into gt5 is getting to be ludicrous. I really dont care how many polygons are in the headlights and how good the lug nuts are modeled. This shows that insted of being a perfectionist maybe Kaz sufferes from OCD.

GT sounds have always been lacking. People in this forum need to pay attention to detail. Sounds are not good in GT. Never were never will be in my book. Seeing the new videos and such they still sound like crap. I've been saying this for the longest time. Turbo noises are way off. Blow-off valves are terrible sound like just air. Engines are obviously lacking some type of loudness to them, I don't know how to explain...If you guys want to compare sounds just go on youtube and hear the difference. Blitz Skyline doesn't sound like one at all. Just listen to the wastegate and the turbo spool.

Another thing that's pretty obvious from that video? The mix of the various sounds...

The damn wind noise. He's up to 4th gear, so he's got to be doing a reasonable speed I think it can be agreed. Can you hear much wind over the engine? No.

Tyre noise. He's going to be on some fairly specialist tyres, but again, can you really hear it that loudly over the engine from on board? No.

Why are the engines so gutless in GT? When you're actually driving a car, that's most of what makes it exciting. How do they not get this?

If anyone has played the Supercar Challenge beta, or even the actual game, the balance of sounds (and options for configuring said balance) are exactly what GT needs...

Even when not on board, the engine sounds are weak. If you look at 1:06 in that video, that's a long camera shot, and looks at how damn loud the engine is? Fine stock cars aren't going to make that much noise by any stretch, but supercars will, racing cars will... The replays whilst pretty can be a bit ridiculous at times when you can't hear the wail from your F40 unless it's within about 20m of the camera...

I played the supercar challenge beta today for the first time and have to say I'm impressed with the sounds. Only thing I hate is the upshifts, so annoying and when you rev your car when stationary, it sounds retarded. However it does sound miles better than GT5p. Shift has some NICE sounds, looking forward to blasting my speakers with that game.

Seriously they need to fire a couple of people from the sound department lol. If GT5 sounds like a PS2 game, well then.

Would they use a mobile rolling road ?, seems to be the obvious choice if most of the car manufacturers don't have one for use.

Reposting what i said on Neogaf, hoping that at least one person from the PD staff is looking:

_____

I've been acused of nitpicking before, but to me it's the solution.

If they gave us the simple option of balancing the sound effects we would correct this. The engines are ok, the problem is that the other sounds (wind, tires) are too loud, speacially the wind.

Let's say they are balanced like this:

Tire screeching - 10
Wind - 10
Engine - 6

And i would change to:

Tire screeching - 4
Wind - 5
Engine - 10

That would solve most problems, it's such a simple solution i don't know why they haven't implemented yet. I guess nobody ever thought about this at PD.

----------------

I mean, it's so simple to implement and it would help so much! Do it PD!

I don't agree with wind volume. I drive daily BMW 330D Touring and when over 160 km/h, the wind and wheel humming is much more audible than engine. Prologue has it exactly right for road cars. When driving racing car with no isolation, things could be different, there will be much more parasite sounds (more humming, chippings in the fenders, body bending sounds, transmission whinning, louder engine etc.), but there is no such car in Prologue than F1. But I fully agree with tyre screeching, it's still too loud and aggressive to my ears. When I take my car to the limit, it's very far, silent and neat sound of that screeching.

I was playing GT5p today with a bmw m3 and it reminded me of this thread, because it sounded so disgusting and I thought hmm, I wonder what the IGN reviews said about the sound of this game. All three reviews, US, UK and AU gave a pretty good score for sound and here are some quotes...

AU: "But the engine notes? Best in the business."
US: "Engine sounds are, bar none, the best anywhere"
UK: "The subject of near autistic attention from Polyphony Digital, the audio helps entrap the player in complete automotive immersion."

WHAT!!?? What's wrong with these people?? I think they should go out and hear what cars sound like in real life before making statements like that. I was shocked when I read these.

Now I thought hmm...if they thought GT5p was good, Forza 2 should of got a 10 for sound. Well I was wrong. They must have retards working there. At least the Australian review was decent with "Great music, great engines, great tires and great crashes. If only we could hear the music in-game." I don't agree with music while racing, I'd rather hear the engine however there should of been an option for those who like it. Anyways back on topic, this is what IGN US said...

"There are some great variants in engine sounds, but it's nothing beyond what we've come to expect from racers. Some of the ambient noise is a little buggy."

HUH!?? come to expect from racers? I don't think there's any racer out there that sounds better than Forza 2 (so far). They need to get their ears checked out.

PLEASE PD, SUPRISE US WITH GT5.

Some cars sound great IMO, take out the Tuned 111R for example and use the rear camera, so raspy. Most the tuned cars like Blitz ER34 with the wastegate (don't confuse blow off valve), Amuse S2000, Mines GTR and even the Z06 tuned sound great.

Many of the standard cars sound pretty lame because they're fairly ordinary in standard form in real life but some like the often mentioned E92 M3 and even to a lesser extent the F430 are a little too tame. Though I find many more are 'accurate'.

I agree some cars sound pretty good and the 599 is pretty accurate. It's still not good enough though. If more people were interested in sound as much as they were for that first damage video, maybe we could get some answers from Kaz.

The hype that was caused about the damage at gamescom was ridiculous, but good. It eventually got that big that Kaz replied. PD need to know what we think. If only sound was just as big, maybe we would get somewhere, but I know that most people don't really care about sound as long as there's good graphics and driving physics.

I don't understand how people can't see audio to be just as important, if not more important than graphics. That's my opinion anyway.
