Nintendo Switch

I agree with the sentiments that it's not about specs. It's never been about specs, and in the era when mobile devices can output visuals that are only marginally behind the big boxes, this rings particularly true.

But last night I had an interesting revelation:

Okay, so Nintendo's partnered with NVIDIA for this thing. But I believe there could be more to this deal than simply NVIDIA supplying Ninty with chips. For all intents and purposes, the Switch is the spiritual successor to NVIDIA's Shield product line-up. NVIDIA and Nintendo are both in a tight spot in this particular market and need to deliver an excellent and affordable product... So I think NVIDIA might be cutting Nintendo a great deal with these chips, on one condition:

GeForce Now support. NVIDIA's $8 monthly game streaming service could very well be available on this thing. So long as you've got a fast internet connection and don't mind a subscription service, this thing will be able to stream high-end PC games from NVIDIA's servers.... somewhat negating one of the Switch's negatives in the process. Which in the future could mean 4K support, too.

And if it supports that, it will probably support NVIDIA GameStream as well, allowing users who also happen to have a beefy PC to stream to their Switch and play in the living room, bathroom, etc. Imagine being able to stream Forza Horizon 3, Civ VI, and all other manner of things to this device, which would normally not be playable on it in a million years.

I too, also think this NVIDIA x Nintendo partnership is more than simply providing the guts to the thing. I think more will come to light regarding this (and the OS it could potentially run on) in 2017.

For starters, those leaked specs are intentionally underpowered for good reason. Dev kits, especially Gen 1 kits, are intentionally underpowered so that developers can't take complete advantage of the hardware right out of the gate. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Tegra X1 chip in the kits and have a Tegra X2 in the final build.

Nintendo has stated that there will be no more Switch news included in an Nintendo Direct in 2016, but they have an Investors meeting this week. This means that more news will trickle out of Nintendo for the rest of the year, but the big punch will be in 2017, where they will likely do a Switch exclusive Direct in January.

Nintendo's confirmed to be doing Switch blowout presentation on January 12th... so that's when you can look forward to learning the price, launch lineup, and exact launch date.
Great news to wake up to, I just wish it was before Christmas. Going to be a tough wait. :)

Is it weird that one of the reasons I think the Wii U failed was because of a lack of wrestling games?

As for the Switch, eyeing it as a "month after release minimum" purchase.

No one really brought the Gamecube for the Day of Reckoning series nor did most people buy the WWE Wii games.

For me, the Wii U simply failed due to a horrible launch line-up and terrible marketing,

The launch lineup was n-o-t-h-i-n-g to me, especially that pile of late/inferior versions of mainstream third party games I couldn't care less about. I've read Nintendo Land is an underrated game, but it was a very far cry from the must-have launch title the Wii U needed. A year later, SM3DW, MK8, and the promise of PCARS (oh well) were what got me to buy my Wii U.

I'm not sure I'll get a Switch day one unless it's got the right launch line-up, but I'll definitely have one for Mario Kart, Xenoblade, and (cross our fingers) Metroid.

As you know, @Wolfe, that is exactly what I'm waiting for, especially the last one. So far so good on the marketing. I think they already may have more prospective buyers than Wii U did at launch. At least more excitement

A couple of pieces of speculation rose from the above article. First, we have Takashi Mochizuki from the Wall Street Journal reporting that the standard size of the Switch game cards will be 16 GB, though publishers can increase the size if they so desire.

Furthermore, for those wanting a hard disk connectivity to the Switch will be sorely disappointed. It won't support hard drives, however not all news is bad as the Switch will be able to support SD cards of up to 128 GB as expandable storage, like the 3DS. This basically confirms that the Switch will have an eShop of some kind.

And one last stop from Ms. Emily Rogers as she says that the RAM on the device is 4GB. Multimedia-focused devices such as the PS4 and the XBO have 8GB of RAM in comparison.

As always, take the above with a very large grain of salt as none of this will be confirmed until Jan. 12, 2017.

$250 USD for the Nintendo Switch seems quite reasonable to me. I don't look at the Switch as being some glorified mobile device or portable gaming device. I don't look at it like (for example) a PlayStation 3 which you can hold in both hands and play like a PlayStation Portable or PlayStation Vita. This thing is adaptable in more ways than a lot of past portable gaming devices. I still have a good amount of faith in the Switch. Not saying I'd buy one had I the money, but I'm not going to overlook the Switch in the least sense.

One more price to add:

Mario Kart 8 Bundle will be sold in Canada for $329 CND. However, I should add in the caveat that this could be copied and pasted from their Wii U bundle.

Emily Rogers, usually right with her leaked information, has dropped some bombs regarding Mario Kart 8 Switch:

"But why should Wii U owners care?

According to sources close to Nintendo, the Switch version of Mario Kart 8 will feature tons of exclusive content including brand new tracks, new playable characters, and a new-and-improved battle mode. That’s right, Nintendo listened to everyone’s criticisms about Mario Kart 8’s battle mode."

Seems like there will be a considerable amount of new content if this to be believed.

The price is great but it is suspiciously cheap though, either they are pricing it as a substantial loss leader to get back in the game in a big way or it really isn't all that powerful a console.

I don't think I would be too concerned with performance specifications. They help, but they shouldn't entirely be the deciding factor as to whether or not to get a Nintendo Switch. Even I still enjoyed gaming on the Nintendo 64 even if it didn't have some of the graphical features that the PlayStation 1 had. In no way do I think the Switch is going to be any slouch or disappointment on the gaming front. It's all about the gaming for me. Always have been.

Well, even at a best case scenario, the Switch would be on par with a PS4. So specifications would be a sore subject for people at least until January.

Exciting news, and this makes a third version justified being on a new console

I hope his means Pokemon Bank will be available on the Switch and we can transfer our Pokemon to Pokemon Stars. I'll totally fanboy seeing my Shiny Swampert from the original Sapphire in amazing visuals :D
It does seem plausible...

"And there will be reason to play both: Pokémon will be tradable between Sun/Moon and Stars via the Pokémon Bank app. We've also heard suggestion there will be more creatures to collect in the Switch version, although not all of our sources could confirm this."
