I got my order in literally on the first day within minutes so I should have mine hopefully late April. Maybe but I'm fine, its going to be great.

Have you checked your order status recently? I understand some are starting to show 'preparing for shipping' :)

Who cares if you look like a dork? Thats so dumb. You care what you look like in the privacy of your own home? People who care about such things also watch TMZ, think that people are defined by what they wear, and are shallow stupid jerks. I'd rather be a dork than chugging brews at a kegger fist bumping. LOL

truest statement here :D

how do they think they look in front of triple screens lol

Thanks museumsteve.

I just checked my status and this is what it showed:

Order Status: Ready - Your order is ready! We'll notify you as soon as it's shipped.

Is this what everyone's is showing?

Seems to be pretty much standard (has been for last week or so) although some guys in the US apparently now showing something like - Preparing for shipping :) (without the smilie)

Yep, I received an email from Oculus RIFT that said

"Rejoice fellow VR pioneers: the day has finally arrived. Oculus Rift development kits are officially shipping! The very first kits have already started arriving.

We actually started shipping on Wednesday, but we haven’t shared tracking information yet because the team is still tied up at GDC in San Francisco. Sorry about that! This means the earliest backers may actually find Rift’s on their doorsteps before they receive tracking numbers. A little surprise to keep things interesting.

It'll take time for us to ship 10,000+ development kits. Hold fast -- they're coming. "

I had a discussion about the OR on Racedpartment.

I probably exaggerated, I don't know until I tried the OR, I'm still not convinced that it's going to be better than a multi monitor setup.

Please be gentle if you completely disagree with my comments on Racedepartment. :nervous:

Personally I dont think I'd expect or even want OR to replace my setup (3 screens). I see it as a completely different experience on the same was a a 3D movie. I watch 3D movies on a 3D projector, so it's a nice big screen and it's awesome..but I wouldn't always want to watch a movie in 3D just because I can.

What about getting sick from the Oculus Rift?

Watching the video, it's clear he can't do driving games so I can imagine it's very disorientating, which naturally can lead to motion sickness. It's like playing something like Descent..if you know how to keep level it's fine but when you start to lose your bearings it gets disorientating and leads to motion sickness.
Also with racers I imagine having motion could actually help as it's a physical sign to your body/brain that you are moving in tune with what's happening in front of your eyes. I haven't tried an OR so this is just my feeling but it sort of makes sense. The whole disorientation is because your eyes are telling your brain you're doing something that you're not, if you're in a motion setup you are breaking down that barrier to an extent.

These are just my opinions..

We'll know soon enough hopefully :)

That guy is not a sim racer, I'd bet we wouldn't have any problems. Plus his FOV is jacked. A motion system coupled with that would take care of the motion issue.

It's of course up to the individual to decide if the Oculus Rift is a viable alternative to three screens. For me, I've tried a DIY headset very similar to the Rift and I can't wait to replace my triple screen setup.

But to say it's just like watching a 3D movie isn't giving the technology enough credit. I enjoy 3D movies, I've got a nice Panasonic AE7000 projector and a high quality 100" screen. I also don't enjoy watching every movie in 3D, but using a HMD similar to the Rift has absolutely made me want to play ALL first person perspective games using a HMD.

A 3D movie will give you great depth that makes it seem like you are looking into a world in front of you instead of just a flat image. Of course you also get the occasional pop-out effect for the extra "wow" factor.

A HMD like the Oculus Rift with head tracking puts you INTO the game. With current screen technology it's simply not possible to have a lightweight HMD take up 180 degrees FOV (what I get with my triple screen setup) so yes, we are sacrificing some horizontal FOV. How much you lose depends on your current setup, I know some triple screen guys that have around the same FOV (110) as the Oculus Rift because their screens are mounted on a desk. But I am willing to sacrifice some FOV for the Rift. I can quickly glance over if I need the extra view.

It's all about immersion. On my triple screen display, I am looking at a window into a virtual racing environment. On a HMD like the Oculus Rift, you feel much more like you are in that racing environment instead of simply looking at it from the outside. That's the whole point of this device, immersion, attempting to fool your brain into thinking you are actually driving that race car.

Dont get me wrong mate, I'm not comparing OR to 3D movies, only saying that I personally prefer to have choices and would always choose to have every option..so I'd keep both. Talking about 3D I mean for me it's a better experience, more engrossing and more fun but I dont always want to wear the glasses..
With OR it's gonna be amazing, but I wont always want to be shut off from my surroundings. I like my racing but sometimes I want to come out of the game, mess around with settings. I want to check these forums while checking my texts..all I mean is I'd prefer to keep both so I can choose how I'll play ;)

I am sooo excited...people in europe are already getting theirs

I'm fortunate enough to have two triple screen setups, one at my desk and one for my racing cockpit. I'll be keeping my desk triple screen setup because it's great for productivity and games like Diablo 3, SimCity, and others. But I can't wait to get rid of the bulky three screen setup on my racing rig. So I can finally just put my rSeat Formula in the corner of a room and not have it take up so much horizontal space due to the triple monitor stand. For a racing game, I want to be fully immersed at all times. There will of course still be a single monitor nearby for basic Windows operations and internet browsing while waiting for a race, but once the game starts, the headset and wireless headphones will go on.

I think OR will be a lot of fun with games you only need one controller, like a X-box or PC similar. I have a 63" Samsung 3D television upstairs and it's fine for movies but I wouldn't want to play 3D games on it. 3D movies seem to be leveling off from two years ago when it was all the rage.

If OR doesn't release swinging for the fence it might not be kicking in a few years after it's release. I just can't see myself racing in OR, can't see all my bling. :) Perhaps I will upgrade my triple 55" HDTV's to a 70" triple setup, you wont find much more immersion then that. :)

I've only just come across the Leap Motion site...that could be a nice addition, especially when it shows tracking fingers, that would be great for pressing buttons on my wheel :D :)
I think I'll get myself a Razer Hydra anyway for when my OR arrives..

I can just imagine playing Resident Evil, it would scare the "bej*s*s" out of me. Walking, walking, stop, open a drawer looking for a clue. Turn around and there are two of those skinless Doberman's snarling and growling. "Pause" button. :D

haha, that is the perfect vehicle for the OC.
