ORS GT | Race 7 | Stewards Review Part 2
Incidents to report in Round 7 at GVE(R).
Incident for investigation: DRZ – Hatfield / Asuka611 - Race 2.
Collision incident between Hatfield / Asuka611 exiting the tunnel and braking for the tight right hander directly after the tunnel, ultimately resulting in damage to Hatfield’s car & resultant loss of position.
Asuka brakes latter on the approach to the tight right hand turn out of the tunnel attempting to overtake on the inside of a leading Hatfield. Asuka moves over to the inside part of the track immediately after the tunnel placing the right front and rear tyres on the grass island. Due to a loss of grip and change in elevation causes Asuka not to be able to wash off additional speed to be able to negotiate the turn without running wide. Asuka's car is rotated left into Hatfield’s car making contact due to the change in elevation and varying grip levels. This causes minor front right damage to Hatfield’s car. At the same time Oni braking on the outside of Hatfield makes contact with the left hand rear of Hatfields car as it gets pushed left from the contact with Asuka causing minor left hand rear damage.
Immediately after the incident, Asuka concedes the gained position back to Hatfield at the second part of the RH/LH complex, however due to the damage at sustained, Hatfield is not able to control the car and is not able to maintain race pace quickly losing his position to Asuka at the uphill left hand sweeper. This ultimately concludes with Hatfield having to pit and losing several positions.
Conclusions:
Asuka is issued with an advisory caution in this instance. Although this is a racing incident it’s important to ensure that drivers are not performing overly ambitious overtaking maneuverers that leave little margin for error.
Incident 2 for investigation: Redness/mrtaital/Cactass – Race 1.
This one of the first situations where I’ve had to investigate an incident of lapped traffic creating an incident for cars on the lead lap that has directly altered the potential outcome of a podium position.
Specially, traffic about to be lapped (mrtatial/Cactass) where found to be failing to give way to a P1 placed vehicle (Redness) on the lead lap, resulting in the P1 vehicle in being held up. This in turn allowed for closure of gap between P1 and P2 (TTR_Toivo). In addition a collision incident occurred between the current P1 vehicle (Redness) and P8 vehicle (Cactass) at the exit of the tunnel resulting in a loss of position for the P1 vehicle to P2 vehicle.
Redness was in P1 from the start of the race as we fast forward to L13 he remains in P1 with Toivo in P2 some 2.5 second behind. Red has lapped traffic ahead of him being P8 (Cactass),P9 (mrtaital) and P10 (vh_mik). vh_mik realising that he is about to be lapped by the lead car in P1 gives way to Redness’s advancing position.
As we go into L14 Toivo is 1.5 seconds behind Redness and gaining. Coming out of the tunnel into the tight RH & LH complex, Redness is not technically in a position to pass P8 (Cactass or P9 (mrtaital) who are locked in their own battle for respective positions – however this does present the first opportunity for P8 & P9 to give way to the oncoming P1 driver. Despite P1 technically being held up at this point P2 (Toivo) is also managing lapped traffic ahead (GTP_Vanquish) who splits P1 and P2.
As we go into L15 the gap between P1 & P2 the gap is down to .8. Out of the tunnel for the tight LH & RH complex GTP_Vanquish gives way to P2 driver Toivo. At this point P1 one driver has not been given a clear path past P9 driver mrtaital and is denied an outside pass at the LH turn of the RH / LH complex after the tunnel.
Down the main straight crossing from L15 into L16 P9 driver mrtaital gives way to P1/P2 drivers who now only have a car length separating them. P8 driver Cactass remains ahead. Going into the short straight after the T1/T2 complex Cactass has opportunity to let both P1/P2 pass as well however at this point Cactass is unsure of the true position of P1/P2 drivers and believes he is being chased by lapped traffic. Cactass remains ahead of P1 and P2 drivers for the remainder of L16.
Into L17, P8 driver Cactass is still in front P1 and P2 positions. Heading into the tunnel only a car length or two separates P8 , P1 and P2 positions. There is opportunity here for P8 to give way to the P1 /P2 cars however Cactass is still under the impression that he is fighting for a position and as a result takes his normal line for the tight RH out of the tunnel. P1 driver (Redness) looks for the inside pass under brakes.
Red and Cactass brake at virtually the same time, Redness moves over to be partially on the ripple strip and grass on right inside part of the track. Red is at 100% brake at this point. Due to the change in grip at this point and the elevation change between track and the inside grassed part of the track, rotates his car avoidably into the midpoint of Cactass’s car.
At the point of impact the speed differential is only around 6km/h but the acute angle of Redness car at impact (approximately 35 degrees to Cactass direction of travel) causes Cactass car to be pushed wide to the outside of the corner and ultimately into the sand despite the relatively low impact speed.
Redness is off the brakes immediately after impact and back on the throttle to regain directional control and drive out of the incident. Whilst this incident unfolds P2 driver (Toivo) siezes the opportunity of the collision and makes a clean pass on the inside of Redness and Cactass capturing P1 and gains 10 car lengths by the time Redness is back up to race pace. By the time P1 (Toivo) and P2 (Redness) cross into L18, Toivo is 2.2 seconds ahead of Redness and has effectively secured the race win.
Conclusions drawn from this incident.
I am issuing advisory warning not only to mrtaital and Cactass but to the entire field ensure that we are mindful of our obligation to give way to cars that are about to lap their position AND especially so where the lead car(s) are clearly lapping at a faster overall speed.
A slight lift on straights or moving to the outside line of the track during cornering. If you happen to be in the inside line of the track stay on the inside line of the track until drivers have passed you.
Put simply you cannot deliberately drive a defensive line that effectively blocks a lapping car(s).
I have decided not apply point penalties in this instance, however if an incident like this occurs again more acute penalty outcomes may result.
More broadly let’s ensure we are all meeting our race obligations in a gentlemanly manner and showing respect for fellow competitors. There where a number of situations in the Round 7 meet where this could have been better managed. Approach your races with patience and be careful. Be mindful of the limitation of your car, its current condition , your own ability and adjust your approach accordingly.
Sincerely,
Jas
