The police officer shot and blinded by gunman Raoul Moat has been found dead at his house in Northumberland.

The body of David Rathband, 44, was found by police at his home in Blyth on Wednesday night after officers received a report of concern for his welfare.

Police said no-one else was being sought in connection with the death.

In July 2010, the PC was shot by Moat as he sat in his patrol car in Newcastle. It came a day after Moat had shot two others, one fatally.

Northumbria Police Chief Constable Sue Sim said: "I am deeply saddened to have to confirm the death of PC David Rathband and my thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.

Very sad for his life to end in what appears to be suicide. RIP.

After the great things he did since the terrible incident it's such a shame for that to end. R.I.P

Very sad, he deserves alot of credit for everything he did to help those similarly afflicted.

Totally agree.
Oh, and I hope those people who signed the petition on Facebook in memory of the guy who shot him just realise what they had done now.

This is sad indeed, especially after what he has been through.

@TankAss95 Really!! There's a petition on Facebook supporting Raoul Moat!! The people that signed it are just sick.

Don't you remember the publicity some skank from Essex got when she took her two kids to the funeral because he was 'a hero'? It was all over the newspapers.

Rest PC Rathband's soul. I saw him on a more heartwarming episode of Jeremy Kyle. He was a brave bloke.

No, I don't remember that. Must have missed it :ouch:

I remember that, she had a Chelsea shirt on and was jobless. How on earth anyone can perceive Moat to be a hero is beyond me, although it isn't surprising that some people do see him as a hero. :indiff:

Hell of a guy. Sounds like he really, really tried to make the best of his situation and help those who had also struggled (hell, he ran the London marathon blind).

It's a great shame he couldn't win his internal battles. RIP.

It just shows that there is no justice in this world. A genuine, hardworking, humble man torn apart by a evil-hearted 🤬.
He's a great role-model for all of us - an example of fortitude, acceptance, and the ability to help others through our disabilities.

R.I.P.
