Playstation 3 System Update Thread

They said they can't.
They said they would have to start from scratch.
Access to PSN lets those consoles get demos and easy access to purchase games for money? Maybe a reason Sony lets it. Any new software releases will require a legitimate PS3.

And who is "they"?

Access to PSN lets those consoles get demos and easy access to purchase games for money? Maybe a reason Sony lets it.
Or it is because of the actual reason, which is that the 3.60 version checks for PSN access have been (probably temporarily) circumvented.

Any new software releases will require a legitimate PS3.
Also untrue.

So I finally got my router opened for atleast black ops but still cant do the 508 mb gt5 download, any advice?

Uh... What's up with my friends list? It's all over the shop now - it no longer sorts alphabetically by status. Why!? Sometimes, I think they just change things to wind people up. :grumpy:

I'd just like to know who's bright idea it was to split the friends list up into two different ABC orders. It wasn't a problem before why did you have to go and change it? At least give me an option to turn it back to the way it was before.... It was annoying when PSN was actually up

I had one helluva time downloading that. I think it was just because everyone else in the world was slamming their servers doing the same thing. I'd say try again once PSN is back up. If you can get a COD update, you should be able to get anything downloaded imo. Maybe it was something on their end? Also, I'd strongly suggest using ethernet for the download (if not all the time anyway).

Don't see it mentioned here yet: Patch 3.61 is now out (has been for a number of hours at the time of this post, and all those who have been watching would know anyway so this is sort of redundant).

Earlier tonight we released an optional system software update (v3.65) for PlayStation 3. This new firmware improves the operating stability of some PS3 format software, and changes the XMB item SaveData Utility (minis) to [SaveData Utility(minis/PSP)].

Again, this update is optional, and can be downloaded by selecting System Update from the Setting column of the XMB.

Yet another trivial update which actually add's nothing to the console as a gaming machine. Why can't Sony accumulate these stability updates then releases them as one pack ever so often, jeez there was only one like 2 weeks ago!

It's probably because they released an optional update, which no doubt caused issues, as people were playing online with different firmware versions. This has happened before too, so you would have thought Sony would have learned by now. Simply put, optional update = stupid idea.:sly:

Unless you are one of the many who have stability issues with certain games and wouldn't be very happy if they "held off" fixing them - I hardly think they would consider the update to be "trivial" and claim that it "added nothing" - now would they?

Not only that, but unless you have a really poor internet connection, just how inconvenient is it to start the download process... go do something else for a few minutes (took less than 3 min for me at about 5Mbps via WiFi), and then use your PS3?

Not only that, but it's not like there is an update every day, not even every week. In fact on average there is an update less than once a month, and in some cases several months between updates. So really, what's the great inconvenience here worthy of a public rant?

Seems people will rant about just about anything these days... often on both sides of a topic... never satisfied... often only thinking about what they want and not how it might impact others... *sigh*

Well all this update did is slow down loading times in GT5. Now I have to wait twice as long to start playing.Hell I can't even get to the Seasonal Events cus it loads forever.

Just because two events happened to you at the same time, it doesn't mean they are related. In fact, if many others didn't experience what you claim, then it's extremely unlikely they are. It didn't slow mine down. If it was the update that caused it, most likely everyone's would be longer.

Did you consider the fact that since the beginning, sometimes GT5 takes longer to start up than other times? Not convinced? Keep quitting and restarting the game and time how long it takes for the main menu to load. Having done that myself before the update I found the time can vary by quite a lot sometimes.

It is a bit annoying though, especially when the console simply refuses to download at the speeds it says it's getting. I've got an 8mb wireless connection and the console downloads at horrible speeds, especially compared to my 360 on the same network. Even if I DMZ the console it just sits there, plodding along. :indiff:

Turn on my 360 and if there's an update (there rarely is) it downloads in seconds and I'm back gaming in under a minute.

It's not that big a problem, I've got plenty to do besides play games, but sometimes you just want a quick blast on GT5 and you can't!

Then they should make it optional and that keeps everyone happy, I don't want fixes for games I don't have and don't want to go through the worry of bricking the console twice a month.

And actually nearly every month has had an update since the console has launched and there has NEVER been a period of several months between updates, the most ever was 3 months. Some months even had 3 updates and 2 updates in a month is not uncommon.

Hey anything is possible, still the fact is that it started to happen only right after the update and I never had any problems with loading the game it always worked perfectly fine.

We should go through the Hacked PSN down thread and direct everyone who said Sony never did any updates and that's why the security was bad to this thread. Then just sit back and watch the "Sony never updates" vs "Sony updates too often" battle.

And this is why I decided long ago that I will never directly interact with customers again. To make one group happy you have to upset another group.

And for those facing speed issues when downloading, pay attention to when you are trying to download it. If I do it as soon as it is available or within 24 hours during a convenient time it will take me forever. But if I wait and then download it when I get up at like 4:30 in the morning it takes 15 minutes, at most on my 2mb line.

It's not the PS3. This is a tired old ancient myth (debunked time after time) based on "comments" by trolls and people who don't understand how their own networks work, their ISP's network work, and the many other issues that easily explain what you are describing and that have nothing to do with the PSN... and there are countless detailed explanation and guides on how to fix individual issues.

Again... logic clearly dictates that if the "issue" was the PSN, then most if not everyone would experience the same so-called slow speed, when in fact there have been 3rd party speed tests comparing the download speeds of identical files over XBL and PSN, and in many cases the PSN download time was faster.

Turn on my 360 and if there's an update (there rarely is) it downloads in seconds and I'm back gaming in under a minute.

Again, if you bothered to do some basic research you would know that the 360 only patches their system software rather than overwrite it (which is not nearly as "safe", but is faster), and as you even mentioned not very often - and not adding nearly the same amount of features as have been added to the PSN that XBL still does not have nor support - and with so infrequent updates, many "issues": go unfixed for long periods of time, despite the fact that - as you have claimed, you can be back gaming in under a minute... yet they don't fix issues in a more timely fashion - hmmmm....

It's not that big a problem, I've got plenty to do besides play games, but sometimes you just want a quick blast on GT5 and you can't!

Actually you can... and saying you can't is really ridiculous, and classic hyperbole.

Then they should make it optional and that keeps everyone happy, I don't want fixes for games I don't have and don't want to go through the worry of bricking the console twice a month.

Another grossly exaggerated myth. There has only been one update that has ever been associated with any reasonable amount of proof to have caused any PS3 to "brick" and even in that case, only a very small percentage of users even claimed it caused their PS3 to brick - and the issue was "fixed" shortly afterwards... and as I said and you confirmed, on average there is only one update per month - yet you even go so far as to claim you are worrying about it bricking twice a month - when will all the ridiculous hyperbole end????

And actually nearly every month has had an update since the console has launched and there has NEVER been a period of several months between updates, the most ever was 3 months. Some months even had 3 updates and 2 updates in a month is not uncommon.

First of all three is "several". Second of all, on average there have been only ONE update a month... that's what I said, and that is a fact. It is not a fact that on average there are two updates a month, or even more as you have suggested.

So on average there is one mandatory update every month (of which there has only ever been a single case where only a small percentage of consoles that were bricked - and temporarily at that), and it takes less than 5 min to download unless you have a crappy network.

So once again, what's the great inconvenience here worthy of a public rant?

Could be just me, but I had long loading times even before this update. Seasonals boot up fairly quickly on my end too.

Where did I say that there are on average 2 updates per month?

I said 2 updates per month are not uncommon, which is true because out of all the updates which have come out roughly 24% have come out twice in a month and 4% three times in a month so I wouldn't call 28% of the time uncommon.

So on average there is one mandatory update every month (of which there has only ever been a single case where only a small percentage of consoles that were bricked - and temporarily at that).

They were not temporarily bricked, there is no evidence that those who had bricked PS3's because of the update ever got them working again with 2.41. 2.41 was released to prevent those with consoles which were still working on earlier firmwares (pre 2.40) from being bricked and there was no 'fix' for those who had already fallen victim to it.
