Playstation 3 System Update Thread

Am I the only one who read that during 3D playback lossless audio is not available.??
you need to chose. (Probably because of the HDMI 1.3 port of the ps3)

Thats true. No lossless audio in 3D.

Does anyone else feel the XMB needs a bit of a revamp? The last one was the sparkles and dynamic themes which was ages ago.

I think it needs more customisability... at the very least I wish I could hide the music, video, TV and network sections of the XMB because I don't use the features those sections offer :\

+1 👍

I'd like them to change the XMB to something simpler when you press the PS button in-game too, it takes forever to load on some games especially when i'm playing online. Most of the stuff you can't even use unless you quit the game anyway.

Something like what the XB360 has would be nice.

Mine are organized by (see if I can remember them all):
  • Arcade
  • Six-axis games
  • Strategy
  • Retro style
  • Classics
  • PS1
  • Minis
  • Omnidirectional shooters
  • Racing
  • PixelJunk
  • NOT GAMES
  • Puzzle
  • Eye Games
  • Unknown (unsorted demos and newly downloaded)

Occasionally I get enough of one thing to split off a separate category. PixelJunk eventually got their own folder, Strategy and Puzzle used to be Strategy/Puzzle, and Retro style and Classics used to be one Retro category. The racing titles used to just be under Arcade too. Too often Arcade gets the one-off from a genre or a game that really doesn't fit with anything else.

I organized by folders.

Exactly... a very useful feature that's been available on the XMB for over three years now.

I can't imagine not using the custom album feature in the XMB media menus. I'm sure I have over 100 apps in the game section alone.

With the ability to make your own albums/folders, you can organize and sort your games, demos, utilities, etc, any way you like.

Can someone help me out here? I put in my Credit Card information from my Mastercard, entered it exactly as it reads and it keeps telling me "The Credit card information is invalid". I then go to the site, enter the exact same info in the "billing information" Portion and I get "The credit card information cannot be changed" This information has worked before so I don't understand why its acting up now.

Why can you no longer browse the internet and listen to music at the same time?

Just as a heads up, but I've been fiddling with the browser for the past couple of days (my laptop PSU blew up. Long story), and I have been able to listen to music while doing it. It seems Sony added the ability back, or something.

3.60 is out, giving you the possibility to change the time it takes, till the controller shuts itself off. But it looks like it also prevents system hacks, so it might be a pretty important update.

It also enabled Cloud whateveritis for PLUS members, didn't it? That's why the network was down int he first place.

Uh... What's up with my friends list? It's all over the shop now - it no longer sorts alphabetically by status. Why!? Sometimes, I think they just change things to wind people up. :grumpy:

Isn't this the 3rd or 4th patch in a row that has mostly in response to trying to block hacking?

The "Cloud" is useless if the network is down or your Internet is down. What they should have done is made all gamesaves copyable to storage devices. And then there is the choking friends limit cap...

I am having serious problems with the new update.
My system refuses to install it for some reason.
Any details? I'm at work and the PS community sites are blocked, so if you gave them there I can't see them right now.

Ok below are my posts on the PS community site

I am unable to install Firmware version 3.60. My PS3 is the 80GB model.

I have tried the "update via internet" method first. But for some reason, it gets stuck at 99% when downloading. After 2 hours, it was still stuck so I decided to reset my system and start again. The same thing happened, it got stuck at 99%.

Later, I tried the "update via storage media" method. I downloaded the 3.60 firmware from my PC to my USB drive and plugged it into my PS3. All went well, the PS3 recognised that 3.60 was present on the USB so I pressed X to proceed. I was greeted with a "please wait" message and it was stuck on "please wait" for a long time (around 2 or 3 hours). So, I had to reset my PS3 and start again but the same thing happened, it was stuck on "please wait".

As the above did not work, I tried the "recovery menu" method. I plugged in my USB drive and selected option 6 in thinking that my PS3 would finally update itself. However, this was not the case. I was greeted with a "checking" message and this was present for 5 hours now, for some reason, my system will not install firmware 3.60.

I am seriously running out of ideas on what to do, all of my previous updates worked perfectly and quickly. If anyone has a solution, please suggest it here as I would like to have my system to be able to connect to PSN again.

Here is my current situation:

"update via internet" - download gets stuck on 99%, wireless or wired connection. Install process will not start.
"update via storage media" - system recognises that my USB drive contains the 3.60 update file, but after I press X, I get an endless "please wait" message.
"recovery menu Option 6" - After plugging in my USB drive and pressing the start and select buttons at the same time, I get an endless "checking" message.

Just to clarify, my system will not start the INSTALL process. I know that many people's systems get stuck during the install process but my system will not even start it at all.

I have not modified my system in any way whatsoever and I only use it for casual gaming and BBC iPlayer.

Additional information:
Everything with my PS3 is fine.
It is running firmware version 3.56 and I can play games, go on the web browser etc..

I just don't understand how it won't install a simple firmware update. All of my previous firmware updates were completed fast and efficiently.

If you need more info then please tell me. I seriously don't know what is going on.

Apparently the PS3 is now secure from the well publicised hack. Hackers have said they can not now access the PS3, the new update completely bypasses the old layered security and root and created a new secure system. The hackers say they would have to start from scratch to bypass this. It does not address already compromised software though.

Eh, not really. It isn't an issue of "can't." It is an issue of "why bother."

It does not address already compromised software though.
Nor does it keep CFW-enabled PS3s off of PSN.

Why don't these updates bring audio (your own songs into the game) GOD!!!!! ;)
Because Microsoft would sue Sony if they did.
