Huh? Where the bloody hell else would we be talking about? Mars? Heaven?
That's why words matter, sir.

Having a law on the books doesn't make it (to quote myself) "reality". Up until the 70s we had a law on our books saying that all London taxis had to carry a bale of hay. How often do you think prosecutions drew on that in the 20th century? Failing to alter elderly statutes is not enaction. I also note that many of those countries aren't majority-Muslim as you suggested they were.
1. Unnecessary laws and laws enforced away from public eyes are two separate things. Here in Texas, it is still illegal to carry wire cutters (a law that is on the books since the invention of barbed wire) Does that mean that it is enforced? No, because it is impractical.

2. I made no such claim that a large swath of these 72 countries have a Muslim majority. What I will say though is that Muslim-majority countries who practice Sharia (like Saudi Arabia and Iran for example) MAY have laws on the books against homosexuality and still enforce them.

This was brought up in my Facebook feed. If Trump gets guff for his Second Amendment comment (justifiably in my mind), then former Democratic Strategist Bob Beckel should get guff for this blatant call for the illegal shooting of Julian Assange in 2010 in defense of Wikileaks comments on Hillary Clinton then.

And while we're at it we should probably give Politico senior writer (then Time correspondent) Michael Grunwald guff over this tweet, since deleted.

It does make you wonder why Clinton supporters want Julian Assange killed.

Watching Donald Trump at the moment reminds me of that scene in the Simpsons when Homer and several others are stuck in a deep hole and Chief Wiggum says, 'No, no, no.... dig UP, stupid!'... Trump's comments and rhetoric are becoming more and more ridiculous, and naming Obama as the founder of ISIS (and Hillary as the 'co-founder') will likely strike even the most ardent Trump supporter as pretty desperate.

I'm in the twilight zone. That's the only explanation I can come up with for why people are behaving the way they are.

We have an election coming up in America, and we're talking about NOTHING that matters. Absolutely nothing. We argue over whether trump is a racist (he is, but not very badly) or a sexist (he is, but not very badly), or a jerk who is unqualified to be president (ding ding ding). We argue whether Hillary is corrupt (she is, and good at getting away from it) or a criminal (she is), or a jerk who is unqualified to be president (ding ding ding).

But what about actual issues?

What about Colorado, Washington and Oregon legalizing pot while the DEA maintains it as a schedule I drug. Even Obama seems to be out of control over whether the DEA prosecutes pot. This is a lawmaking entity that essentially has no accountability?

How about the TSA? There was a national outcry over the TSA policies, which seemed to be out of everyone's hands. They make law and we have no say over it whatsoever and yet we get distracted by which political candidate we like least.

We should be talking about the budget, but we talk about the economy (god do people even know the difference anymore?). Let's talk about copyright law. Let's talk about SOPA. Let's talk about net neutrality. Let's talk about water consumption, electric vehicle subsidies, nuclear power plants, fracking, military spending, immigration (no, not a wall, actual immigration policy)... I can't believe I'm saying this but I long for the days when global warming actually mattered to people. We should be talking about what a disaster the ACA is but we talk about the 2nd amendment... the 2nd amendment! What is there to argue? It's almost as clear as the 1st amendment! We keep coming back to the same stupid debates about whether or not we deserve the few liberties we have left while ignoring the fact that we have ZERO recourse over the things that really affect us.

How do you like the way the federal reserve has handled our economy? Let's vote for their policies! Oh wait, we can't. Do people even know what the federal reserve is? Who cares! Trump said something, let's talk about that.

I had a friend who told me that "this year, it matters", "this year, we can't afford to vote third party", "this year, we can pick the lesser of the evils". This year is the most obvious year that you have no business voting for a republicrat or a democrapublican. If you can't see it this year, you'll never see it. If you can't tell this year that neither of these people is worth any discussion whatsoever, and neither of them will actually change anything anyway, you're hopeless. You'll never wake up, you'll never realize how fruitless it is to keep throwing away your vote on unqualified immoral ***hats who do nothing but distract from what matters. And what matters is that you've lost control. We the People of the United States of America have given up our control over everything about our lives that is important to us, because that's how we like it. We don't want to vote on actual issues, we want to vote on personalities. We don't want an election where we talk about boring things like debt and monetary policy, we want to vote on Survivor! It makes no difference whether the candidate we vote for can actually accomplish anything or even knows what they're doing because we like our government like we like our reality TV... absolutely pointless.

Every time the election comes around we fall for the exact same tricks. The same deception. Oh suddenly let's have a discussion about whether gay marriage is legitimate (wasn't decided by the executive branch). Let's focus on Guantanamo Bay, or water boarding. Let's focus on whether the wife of a presidential candidate stole too many meaningless platitudes from an old speech given by the first lady.

Anything but what matters. Anything but actual policy. Anything but the uninteresting task of cleaning up our financial and civil messes.

"I'm going to restore law and order". How? Nevermind, I don't want to know your crazy plan for how.
"I'm going to make sure that the fat cats pay their fair share". What's fair? 500 times what the average american pays? 600 times? 10000 times? When has that worked... ever?
"It's easier for these kids to get guns than books." In what mindblowing universe are you living!

This election is not where you get to decide whether you're for or against the rich (if you're against the rich go back to economics 101).
This election is not where you get to decide whether you're for or against terrorism (nobody is for terrorism).
This election is not where you get to decide whether you're for or against outsourcing.
This election is not where you get to decide whether you're for or against healthcare.

In this election you decide whether you want any input into your government at all. You're voting on whether you should get a vote. Make no mistake, if you vote trump, or you vote Hillary, you're voting for reality TV. You're voting for platitudes. You're voting for pointless. You're voting either for someone who has no morals and will not follow through with anything they say, or for someone who has no morals and will not follow through with anything they say.

I don't care which third party you vote for. Vote green party, communist party, libertarian, write in Bernie... I don't care. I honestly do not care. Just... if you respect yourself at all, don't throw away your vote on either of the two major parties. They don't deserve it.

Edit:

Sorry @Touring Mars, you got caught in the crossfire while I was typing this. The rant above was not brought to you today by any particular GTP member.

Ding ding ding indeed.

Yea, you're who I'm talking to. You're the guy drinking the kool-aid (I swear I wrote that before @mustafur posted above). Number 1 on that list is "make them pay their fair share". Platitude, pointless, fixes nothing. The US national debt is not on that page. That page is full of the same lack of plan, distracted nonsense you get every 4 years. Let's take the criminal justice link:

Strengthen bonds of trust between communities and police
Effective policing and constitutional policing go hand in hand. We can—and must—do both by:

  • Bringing law enforcement and communities together to develop national guidelines on the use of force by police officers, making it clear when deadly force is warranted and when it isn’t and emphasizing proven methods for de-escalating situations.
  • Acknowledging that implicit bias still exists across society—even in the best police departments—and tackle it together. Hillary will commit $1 billion in her first budget to find and fund the best training programs, support new research, and make this a national policing priority.
  • Making new investments to support state-of-the-art law enforcement training programs at every level on issues like use of force, de-escalation, community policing and problem solving, alternatives to incarceration, crisis intervention, and officer safety and wellness.
  • Supporting legislation to end racial profiling by federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.
  • Strengthening the U.S. Department of Justice’s pattern or practice unit—the unit that monitors civil rights violations—by increasing the department’s resources, working to secure subpoena power, and improving data collection for pattern or practice investigations.
  • Doubling funding for the U.S. Department of Justice “Collaborative Reform” program. Across the country, there are police departments deploying creative and effective strategies that we can learn from and build on. Hillary will provide assistance and training to agencies that apply these best practices
  • Providing federal matching funds to make body cameras available to every police department in America.
  • Promoting oversight and accountability in use of controlled equipment, including by limiting the transfer of military equipment to local law enforcement from the federal government, eliminating the one-year use requirement, and requiring transparency from agencies that purchase equipment using federal funds.
  • Collecting and reporting national data to inform policing strategies and provide greater transparency and accountability when it comes to crime, officer-involved shootings, and deaths in custody.

Step one, emphasize the same crap we already emphasize. Step 2, blame the police. Step 3, spend money on something, anything. Step 4, pas counterproductive legislation aimed at a lack of problem. Step 5, double-down on the justice department. Step 6, Double down on the justice department. Step 7, double down on bad press so that police are frozen. Step 8, add regulations to our regulations which are not working. Step 9, collect data because we have no real plan.

Yea, vote for her. I think it's clear that if we implemented that stuff we'd have everything fixed. BTW let's vote for her because she's a woman and we need to fix sexism. Voting for a female candidate should cure the country of sexism the way voting for a black male has eliminated problems for black males. Let's not address any actual issues, let's go for anything symbolic.

More videos just keep getting made, there is endless material.

Here is a favourite instead.

Will do, and I'm sure Johnny will make room for you in his spare room when you flee Colorado.

I'm curious, do you just shut your brain off on this subject? Are you making a purely emotion decision? Maybe a bit of both? Is it an anti-trump thing or do you just feel that Hillary is an honest person who will deliver on her promises?

I know a lot of religious people are able to suspend their critical thinking in areas of religion. They segment their consciousness so that in some parts of their lives thinking is a virtue and in other parts faith is a virtue. Is that your approach to politics?

@Danoff, I gave up on issues because I can't even determine where they stand. Usually, I go by past votes, actions, etc. The problem is that based on that Clinton is anti-gay, anti-blacks, anti-war and is the last person to represent feminism. But she has also played a roll in leading us into war, argued for gay rights, supported BLM, and is being hailed as the choice for feminism.

Similar with Trump, though he lacks actual political experience. Based on his statements and use of money he is for and against guns, for and against abortion, has strong or weak family values, and is for and against war. He's also a liberal or a conservative.

The problem with issues here is that both these candidates have proven track records of flip flopping. You can say you'll vote for Trump because of his X stance on an issue, only to have someone show he also supported Y stance.

It's a show and nothing more. Even moreso when practically no president has run the country in a way that reflects past statements or actions.

I gave up a long time ago. The best I can do is hope a third party comes out different. In this case, I'm not even in 100% agreement with my favored candidate on some big issues and wonder if I should vote at all.

Wonder if she will Pardon Terrorists & Criminals connected to powerful people in a state that Chelsea Clinton will run for office after Hillary's term.

You know the more and more I see a chance at Hillary in office, the more and more I think about Chelsea's political motivations and how I hope they are non-existent.

Welcome to the club.

Perhaps this election more than any other in recent history is evidence that the office of POTUS is not what it used to be, and that the entire election process itself (which has been running almost since before the last one even finished) has become almost entirely about the cult of personality and very little to do with what really matters.

People from outside the USA usually only get to see or hear about the president (or the presidential race) and one has to dig a bit deeper to find out what is really going on in US politics. Coverage of the race for the White House has become ludicrously over-blown and only reinforces the (erroneous) impression that the US president is all powerful and can basically do what they please. Arguably, the Presidential election process itself is a huge distraction and ultimately is all a bit pointless in the grand scheme of things when it is (or at least ought to be) Congress that decides on how the government operates and which laws get passed etc. It kind of begs the question why the US still needs a President, as opposed to say having the majority party leader as a Prime Minister...

The Colonel AI from Metal Gear Solid 2 was right; United States elections are just a show for the public.

Never mind the Illuminati, let's start worrying about the Patriots.

It's been that way for a while I think. Even though with checks and balances, the president should have certain powers, their functionality is mostly dictated by Congress nowadays.
