This has the potential to be huge.

It'll probably/hopefully result in more FIA race cars and tracks, but in the back of my head lies the hope that we'll see offical FIA replica championships with real grids etc. etc.

Sounds intriguing but I'm going to wait for more details before getting too excited. If all it means is 'certified' digital tracks it won't really affect us. If however it leads to race series being licensed and simulated with proper racing it will be great.

This has so much potential, I'm so eager to learn more about it, hopefully this doesn't disappear on us for months like other things have!

What phenomenal news on the basis of things though, just wow.

Is F1 under the FIA?

Yes, most everything big is really.

Just in case some people don't know : FIA Championship : F1/Karting/WRC/Rallycross/WEC and WTCC : So much possibilities :D

Also, for the tracks, does that mean that 4 tracks are laser scanned? I mean by this sentence : "has been granted an FIA certification for four of the game’s world-famous tracks. The virtual circuits in Gran Turismo have been recreated in intricate detail. The track inspection for each was conducted by FIA officials who visited PDI’s development studio in Tokyo, where Gran Turismo 6 track models were accurately compared to FIA standards"

So wich track is the one in the picture.

Silverstone

Yes, PD's been laser scanning their recent tracks, and not just the four. Most of the new tracks in GT6 were laser scanned.

Is F1 under the FIA?
Pretty much all international auto racing is under FIA or partnered with FIA as many of the worlds courses are part of FIA. Well I believe that FIA is a multinational sanctioning body for racing, the worlds biggest races are under their care or partnered somehow with them and other regulatory bodies.

I'll be researching this, be back with a more well put together reply.

I'm rather confused about this. Before I jump into the 'hopeless speculation' train, I first need to know what it means in which they don't explain too well. What does this partnership mean, approved tracks by FIA? That's cool and all, but what if that's it?

This could be the greatest development in console racing history for the next 20 years. Or it could only be a nice decal that goes on the outside of the box.

Hopefully it will mean more content resulting from the added ease of access.

Could be that the FIA designation for the cars could allow for licensing loopholes. IE, all GT3 cars regardless of make. Same for the possibilities of F1.

Either way though, doubtful much of this will come to fruition for many months.

For all you skeptics out there, rather than looking at the glass half empty, why not look at it half full? Sure, it could lead to nowhere and just have the fancy FIA label, but it could also lead to something huge! The partnership is just a step in the door. What other dev can say the same thing?

The fact that the FIA is forming a partnership with a damn VIDEO GAME company is a milestone!

hsv
Okay... Loeb in the GT6 credits as a voice actor (I think?)... Citroen WTCC stuff?
Still nothing to do with FIA unless they want to use the WTCC name and branding. Car/track/driver likeness nothing to do with FIA. You can't just strike this deal with them and include every WTCC/WEC car/driver/track with no further licensing.

WTCC is dying a rapid death, i'm sure they'd want to do something vaguely interesting with the branding.

I don't think this will be anything major like new content, just the FIA saying "hey, PD scanned the tracks good."

pssst... What about Formula 1?
well before i go really crazy with this, isn't Formula 1 controlled by the FOM (Formula One Management)?

EDIT: well it looks like my question has been answered. thank you GTPlanet

Hopefully that means more race tracks & real tracks to be added to GT6, as well as real race elements such as opponents who drive at a decent pace and are aware of other cars, damage, fuel/tire wear, qualifying, and standing starts.
However, 2015 seems a bit late for the online championship, considering GT6 has been available since last year on PS3.

Hmmm so I'm rereading the article and from what I understand it's the FIA giving their certification to the tracks already modeled in GT6? They looked at the tracks and gave them their seal of approval? My hype train is really confused right now.

PD's FIA WEC championship: 5 laps Silverstone, 5 laps Spa, 24 minutes of LeMans. Maybe 3 licensed cars

I hope its not the WRC debacle all over again
