The reason why I haven't complained about GT4's AI all that much is because I haven't been whacked off the track. There was one time in the GT4 All-Stars event at Sears Point that my Nissan R92CP got whacked in the rear by a rival R92CP in the final corner. I managed to still win the race (because it was on the Final Lap). But that's nothing compared to people who are so desperate to win that they'll run me off the road like in ToCA Race Driver 3 or Pro Race Driver (which is much worse). If it hasn't happened to me all that often, I won't talk about it. Let the AI cars "bump draft" each other all day. As long as they don't make me their b:censored:, I'm cool.

Why/how was it horrible?
I actually find it hard to believe you are asking that question!!!! The AI in GT4 knows the racing line and that is it, if you are on the line and they want to get back on it they will simply drive into you, doesn't matter if that means rear-ending you, a side-swipe, etc. Even to the degree of just driving into the side of you on a straight.

Combine that with the rather odd behaviour it had at times, like (as has been mentioned) pitting on the last lap, braking mid-corner for no reason, running so wide on certain tracks that they pit every lap (Motorsport land).

The AI in GT4 (like the rest of the series) is unfortunately one of the single worst aspects of the game.

I actually like the AI in TRD3. mainly because it varies depending on the type of car in the event. Open wheel events sees the AI being very cautious and avoiding contact as much as it can, while the more touring car races sees much more contact, just as you see in the real thing (take a look at a real V8 supercars race). I've also found in a lot of TRD3 races when I went back and looked at the replay the fault was not always with the AI driver, but rather with me cutting across them and a collision being almost unavoidable (but as I say some race series see more aggressive AI that others).

Does anybody know which track this might be?

I don't have GT near me and the picture itself doesn't offer many clues but if I had to take a guess: Autumn Ring?

I think Cracker Nailed it...
Dont think I can pin point a corner, but surely it is suzuka, and because the background seems so closeby, it could be the hairpin exit... Brilliant Job Cracker..

The screen with the 430 looks too good to be a game, the grass detail is unlike anything I ever seen. The grass near the edge of the road looks so perfect and doesn't even look like repeating textures.

Could be some randomisation.

Btw they really need to work on collision physics, at least we can get a scale with percents (and for every part of the car) so car would feel different in driving when damaged, I really dont care about visuelisation :)

I got to thinking about something last night. GT5 might be the first in the series that will make me actually qualify for a race. I've always been able to win a race from the back of the pack. With 16 cars in the field I'm not so sure that I could get by that many cars in time. I can't wait to see how challenging it will be to come back from 16th to 1st.

Does anybody know if the 2005 mercedes-benz SL65 AMG (aka theLINDSAY LOHAN CAR) is going to be in the game? i'm wondering because i only saw the SL55 AMG and GT4, for some reason, is the only racing game that has this vehicle. so, if anybody can help me out, thank you

That's another good point. It could get people to qualify. A popular alternative for not having qualifying for all races is to simply have random qualifying. It's what I do in rFactor. Random qualifying would really give non-traditional, non-hardcore gamers a chance to make some noise. There has to be an exclusion to all of this- if the random qualifying puts you in 1st, and if money is rewarded for pole position, you get no money if your random qualifying position is 1st. Earn it, player!

Any other gut feelings about this package?

This is the best and most frequently updated thread for car lists as we get new info:

So far it hasn't been spotted.

As for qualifying, I'd like to see an option like TOCA giving you the option to qualify or to just set the grid to some criteria (eg random, points, reverse etc)

Of course you could come first if starting 6th in GT games - but only if you took an overpowered car for the race :). That is the main reason why something called "A Spec Poits" exists :). To make you take the car somewhere in 120-200 A-Spec Points range and then to race :). Try racing non-tuned (except for the tyres of course) Nissan 9CP Race Car in Gran Turismo World Championship against 1st set of opponents - where are another 9CP, CP2, Minolta, CLK GTR and Vertigo - do an ballast ad-on for achieving at least 80 A-Spec Points and then try to win from the 6th place or whatever :D. GT makes your racing what you make of it.

Or as JFK would say - Do not ask what Gran Turismo can do for you - ask yourself what you can do for Gran Turismo". :)

As for "random Q" - it has no sense. Best thing would be to bring back praxis form the first game - pole gets you 10.000 Cr. So, you want pole. And you have to find a car that would give you both pole and race win in order to get maxximum Cr's. It is hard - yes - because pole-car sometimes doesn't have to be win-car. But there The Magic lies. Simple as that.

I am not so sure about not getting the money if you get put in first place. Let's be honest, if you get put there then its just pure luck and I wouldn't want to miss out on the prize money because I am the unfortunate bloke who happens to be on pole position, of course you have the problem who will keep quiting and re-entering to make sure they are randomly put in first place but lets be honest they will find that pretty tedious if they do that for every race.

Random qualifying would be good for say; One make races, I think it would work well, but I would like the normal GT style of being placed in last place, although with a grid of 16 qualifying should be available if you want to on all series, and I think it would encourage people to use it.

If you are going to use it more often, I think the qualifying, the the current system would need some serious improvement;

most important of all we need a qualifying table, so we can see who is in first, and what their laptime is. Also last place, so we can ascertain what the range is because I don't like being in the dark about how my opponents are doing. In real life of course you don't have a table to see how your opponents are fairing, but then again in real life you don't have a map of the track with blue dots whizzing round it either. I wouldn't expect the map to feature all cars as this would take up quite a large area of screen, but like I said before, it should at least have your place and time, first place and his/her time, last place and his/her time, it wouldn't have to be any more elaborate to work well, although maybe the top 6 could be included.

This is so much important, I just think it would eb more realistic and slightly more interesting; when you start qualifying in GT4 as soon as you exit the pits you appear infront or amongst a train of cars, really cars in qualifying will try to keep free of a pack so they don't catch up any slower cars during hot-lapping, They also appear to have all done their out lap too before you even get out the pits, again I can see th functionality because when you start your hotlap you already have all the sector times to beat, but I feel with 16 cars is you leave the pits for qualifying they should be doted all around the track, including in the pits, then when you set your hot lap you may want to go and beat it again just to ensure that an opponent who hasn't left the pits yet doesn't come and beat you after you have quited qualifying, this wouldn't be hard to do as a programmer, nor should it create many issues, I just don't think that GT4's system would be up to the task, for the next game.

Hopefully PD have considered this as they have increased the number of cars, with their normal attention to detail, I doubt they will overlook it. Which is good news. If you feel I have missed anything please let me know.

The increase of cars was needed for the future of GT, but I wasn't expecting such an increase, It is very good news.👍

Now that your driver is very visible and you have the internal camera I'm assuming you'll be able to choose different overalls/helmets like you could in Tourist Trophy. Not that important but a nice touch all the same.

Oh, and just to add skidmarks. I want skidmarks and good smoke (really billowing white smoke). I feel that GT5 Prologue will still be only showing just a part of what GT5 will be like on release.

I can't believe my eyes, from 6 cars with no interior to 16 cars with interior, looking that good, can't believe it.
Now that we have interior view, I wonder, in a car that is only available with automatic transmission in real life, what would happen when you choose it with manual transmission in the game?

Thanks PD....You have no idea how much fun it is to spend countless hours finding the right combination to get a high A-spec number, only for you to change the line up randomly and make me rethink the process all over again. :banghead:

All of that time wasted when I could have been racing...thanks ALOT!!! Would it be toooo hard just to give me equal cars in stock form to give us a challenge. Then again maybe thats what M34 is for?!

I dare say that "it is what Gran Turismo can do for me" 👍

1. I've noticed something in the newest video that may or may not be disturbing.

It seems to me that whenever the rear engine drive cars like the R8 and F430 are on the track there is only 6 cars total

But when there are cars that are not rear engine, and thus don't have the detailed engines, there is 16 on track.

Please tell me I'm crazy. Can PD NOT have 16 highly detailed Mid engine cars on the track because of the extra polygons to detail the engine? Can only certain cars race up to 16 at a time?

2. I've noticed some think this should be free. I for one think it shouldn't IF it has 50 cars, 4 tracks and online it shouldn't be free. This is a work of art. You don't give away art for free. $10-15 is reasonable

3. I've noticed in amar12's first post that you can move the camera in and around the car. That's good news. The doors should open giving you a great look inside the cars. Hopefully this will be a feature that you can use before buying a car.

4. For those hoping for more than 16 cars, don't hold your breath. It is a miracle they can get 16 cars that detailed running in 1080p. Now if it was 720p that would be different. But even the latest computer graphics card would have no easy task of displaying 25 cars of that quality in 1080p at 60fps. That level of graphics, combined with the addition of damage, weather, and day night changes in GT5 should push the PS3 very far. I think PD has done an excellent job and I can't ask for more than they already shown and promised.

I just checked the video, and at first glance, you might be right. However, in the Screenshots on the official website, there are plenty of pictures with mid-engined cars such as the F430 and the R8 and more than 6 cars on the track. And it would be kind of pointless if those photomode shots actually were impossible to make.

Hey thanks, looks like I was just crazy , thanks for the link, it shows an R8 with at least 12 cars and I'm sure there was 16 just couldnt see them. I was just going off the video, and I hadn't seen all the pics

BTW, I looked at some Forza 2 videos/pics, and GT5 makes it look like a last generation game, it's unreal how far ahead GT5 is in terms of graphics quality despite the fact GT has 16 cars and Forza 2 only has 8

Oh and here is a pretty good video, real life vs GT5 comparison

I AGREE completely. This would also be the easiest way to implement "damage" into GT. Since it'd be based on numeric factors they could easily be put into the physics calculations to make the appropriate adjustments to the car's behaviour. It would ease some of the fan's demands for damage and the next step would be to do the graphical addition and that would buy PD time til GT6 comes out :sly:

As far as AI is concerned, there definitely needs to be some major improvement... but you'd think with the PS3's processing power this should be a very doable thing. Of course if they really deliver the online functionality the current news is indicating, then you can jump into some mano-a-mano racing!
