Explanation:

If your car has a manual transmission, you may have noticed that every time you drive in reverse, especially if you gain a little speed, you can hear the transmission whining about it. Sometimes people think there's something wrong with the transmission, and bring their car to the shop. I can save you the trip, all cars with manual transmission whine in reverse, some more than others.
Your next question, of course: Why? I've heard a number of interesting explanations over the years, but the real answer is in the gears. Specifically the way the teeth in the reverse gear are shaped. The forward gears in your transmission are helically shaped, meaning the individual teeth on the gear are curved rather than straight (see photo) but reverse has straight cut teeth.

Why is straight noisier than helical? A helical gear's teeth are always in contact with the next gear thanks to their shape. Picture two straight gears moving very slowly. There's a split second that you'll see space between the teeth. The continuous tiny tapping of the gears remaking contact with each other creates the whine you hear. Since a helical gear has long, curved teeth, the point at which two gears meet is never out of contact, so no tiny taps, and no noise.

Ok guys I have a little problem that I hope you can help me with. Haven't spent much time with PCars. Tried it with my new Thrustmaster TX last night but I seem to remember that my CSR Elite exhibited the same problem. Basically if I set the steering deadzone to 0 the steering wheel acts as a controller, turning left or right results in max lock straight away. If I set a small deadzone, 1 or 2, I get the full lock to lock range of my wheel but the deadzone seems huge. Is this a known fault or am I missing something?

^ No.. 12C does not have a gear whine that loud. Nor does other 'normal' road cars. It comes from straight cut gears.

From roadcar the sound on reverse is the gearwhine from your car. As it is a straight cut gear (normally).

Edit: Ofcourse I'm not saying that a tranny is completely silent, but it gets hidden under other sounds on road cars.

Of course not, but just saying how annoying loud a car could get. The 12C still needs a proper sound pass as far as I know.

About my car, you are right that reverse is louder than the forward gears. I can still hear the forward gears though. I can hear the whine from the drive belts too. The change in the sound of explosions in each cylinder. The suction of air. The chatter from the valves. Not to talk about wind and road noise, and water being displaced under the tyres or hitting against the inside wheel arch.

There is surprisingly little sound dampening in the car. To the point I would say there is non when getting in a modern car. So at least to my sharp ears nothing is hidden in my car. Although you will need to drive around in the car for a bit to clearly be able to distinguish every pop, bang and squeak produced.

Anyway, my point was every car is different and it can always get worse. :P

@LogiForce you seem to have a very decent gaming pc. Except maybe your graphics card.

Waiting for nVidia's Maxwell chip most likely. Either that or I might get an EVGA 780 Ti Kingpin card.
But yeah, the card is starting to show its age. Bought it when Mafia 2 came out as I still had an EVGA 8600 GTS at that time. I just like to buy good/decent cards and use them for about 4 years I guess, until I get really annoyed with the performance.

Thanks for the compliment though. I never get any comments on my PC, but I am indeed quite happy with it.
Although down the line I might end up making a wall mounted radiator housing for my PC's water cooling. Hopefully that will save a bit on the heating bill. :dopey:

Why does that list totally not excite me one bit? :indiff:
Maybe its because I don't like French cars so much.

Congrats as usual though.

Because they always break down?

Yup, my dad had a Peugeot 306 once. We went to the south of France (with small Predom polyester caravan) with it fine, but when we wanted to go back north to the Netherlands the... right drive axle joint broke... when that was fixed in Normandy the left one gave way... the katalyst started to smell like rotten eggs... the thing started to leak oil and the sunroof started to leak.

I hate that car soooo much. :grumpy:

Logi, thats one of the most stupidest explanation I ever heard... Its like saying you dont like Ferrari cause your Lancia broke down once.

PS: Weirdly enough I dont like Ferrari much and my Lancia used to break down a lot, but those two facts are not connected together at all. :D

It ruined my holiday! Its fine to hold a grudge. lol
Granted I do think Peugeots are the better looking French cars looking at the fleet of cars they produce/have produced.

The reason I dislike the others is mostly looks to be honest. Most Renault and Citroen cars are not to my liking. Of course every brand has their exceptions.
Plus I am not a fan of the Hydraulic suspension and turning headlights of a Citroen. I dislike the ugly Renault Megane ass and the old Megane is dull looking, asin grandpa level dull.

My Lancia runs fine. Though every 6 months minor things pop up. Broken wiper, new sparkplugs, brake fluid refresh... the stuff that tends to wear naturally. Though it does tend to be often enough to drive a good friend of mine to a point where she said I needed to trade it in asap. lol
The painful part of Fiat group performance cars is that they need a new distribution belt and the works including water pump every 3 years. Costing at least 300-600 euros each time. The Delta being more expensive as its rarer than an Alfa Romeo.

Anyway, after the Peugeot 306 XR 1.4 my dad got a Toyota Carina E (1.6 16v (4A-FE engine)) which he still has. He might swap it next year for an Alfa Romeo or BMW. He is thinking of something more sporty at least. If possible a wolf in sheeps clothing.
I wanted him to get a Lancia Thema 8.32 though (has a Ferrari engine), but he is not biting yet. :(

...The Delta being more expensive as its rarer than an Alfa Romeo...
One is a specific model family from a marque, the other is a marque which has produced some pretty rare models... :sly:

But hey - what I wanted to ask is what kind of Delta do you have?

A simple one really. Not the fancy one we all know.

1999 - Lancia Delta HPE 1.6 16v 103HP

Also called the Delta 2 with chassis number 836. The famous Delta 1 we all know (and games License) has chassis number 831.

This is based on the Alfa Romeo 155 chassis and luckily shares many components with the 155. Yet some critical components are still different. The waterpump of the Delta is much larger than the one on the 155 surprisingly, and since that is a Lancia Delta special component and part of the drive belt and pulley replacement every 3 year, it ends up being an expensive job for me.
On the other hand replacing twin spark spark plugs is far more expensive on the Alfa Romeo.

I always bring my Delta to the local Alfa Romeo specialist, so I get to know these little facts. :)
We drove with 2 main mechanics and the Alfa specialist garage owner in my car, the boss behind the wheel. The comment was my 1.6 Delta pulled like a 2 liter Alfa and had awesome handling. So much the boss drive like crazy through town. :)

Anyways, here is a little fun with the naturally aspirated 2.0 16v HF version.
The cars are just a simple FF layout, front engine front wheel drive. It has just 30 horses more than my car. :)
Also the most powerful Delta 2 was a 2.0 16v 193HP generating turbo charged version.

This is a Lancia Delta HPE HF 2.0 16v 139HP

Also a bit more serious racing with the Delta 2 :D

Edit: I just noticed I posted a bit too much. I just love my car and start to ramble. Sorry guys. :embarrassed:

Okay okay. You got me there. I guess the nose is shaped kinda like the upper jaw with nose of a lion.
Maybe I should stop at the 2000+ models. :P

Still a 205 GTI, 206 GTI, 306 GTI and 406 are all nice looking cars. Their rally versions are even better looking. But I agree the big grill indeed ruined the later models.

I guess I still had past glory in mind in hindsight here. Sorry

Some great cars there announced, the Laguna reminded me the days of Toca 2 Touring cars (So fun):

This was my very first pc race game. I was so impressed. Comparing it with the games today, I'm not impressed anymore. :D

A little teaser for an upcoming trailer... I wanted to have it done in time for the holidays, but It still needs more work. Rather than rush it out I put this together out of some unused clips.

Happy Holidays!

A few years ago when Shift was released, it had a few steering wheel issues. After installing a few mods, the steering felt a lot better and more natural.

In the beginning of the development of pCars, it had the same steering wheel issues as Shift. Later on it got better. I have never tested or tried pCars so........

......... my question:

Is steering still a problem with pCars?

That's what I wanted to hear. Good to hear.

Now let's hear more about pCars because this game interests me a lot.

Well what do you want to know?

It is my favourite racing game and it isn't even finished. Hope that tells you what I think of it.
