Xeon is Intel too. It has hyperthreading. I´ve read that BF4 is using HT and works better with the Xeon. It is the newer CPU from Intel but the i5 4690k is easy to overclock.

Yeah but I want to use that PC for 3-4 years then. I guess the Xeon is nice and for 200 bucks ok. GPU, I think I´ll wait for the new Radeon 3xx series. I will build the PC for Pcars so I dont need it until november.

Does the server based Xeon have the instruction sets used by games? I don't know if they have SSE and other likewise instruction sets.

Personally I would pick a pick an i7 K-series cpu (of which I know to have all the instruction sets for home/gaming use) with 16GB memory (2x8GB so you have 2 spare slots for future expansion) and put that on a motherboard that has more than enough sata and USB 3 ports so it can last for a few years when expanding storage capacity, as well has being able to hook up a lot of extra racing pheripherals.

They do. The SIMD instructions (MMX, SSE) are just as important for e.g. software used in science and engineering.

For a gaming PC the price premium for a Xeon is probably a bit of a waste; there's no need for ECC or multiple CPUs, you'll likely be GPU bound before being able to utilize the potential benefits of multiple CPUs and more cores. Apart from the workstation and server features, i7s and Xeons are basically the same. Better spend the difference on faster/more memory and a faster GPU setup.

Didn't know as I haven't looked at server stuff in years, if not half a decade or longer. Thanks for the info!

Just so everyone was wondering. When I bought my i7 2600k I already owned a GTX480 which only just had the GTX580 following it at the time. So for me it was better to simply get the best for my specific uses. Mostly gaming but sometimes I like to test a new OS (e.g. Windows 8.1 or SteamOS) in a virtual machine, at which point the extra threads come in handy for load balancing purposes.

Heck I even ended up playing two games at the same time sometimes, and have a bunch of (10+) tabs open in Chrome. So yeah, it has happened that I had chrome open and Project CARS in the background while I played Euro Truck Simulator 2. All acted and played fine without a hickup though. I never have maxed my CPU as far as I know, not by normal usage that is (I did run some benchmark programs).
But yeah... I just simply forget to close stuff sometimes. :dunce: lol

In any case. Most say an i7 is overkill, even for my type of usage, but I just always like to have a bit of processing power spare as to handle any load spikes that might popup unexpectedly.
To be honest. I don't know how Sandy Bridge i5 owners have felt, but with my i7 2600k I haven't felt the need to upgrade once. Nor did I get thoughts that I might be running out on processing power.
Just to note, I pre-ordered my Sandy Bridge CPU... motherboard... etc. So I have had it since its introduction in 2011. So it is already 3 years old. ;)

So yeah... what's wisdom when buying parts? I dunno.
If you buy top of the line, you'll know it will last for 4 to 5 years. Technology really isn't evolving as fast anymore as in the 90's and early 00's. So it's not like you'll notice performance walls in 2 years time as back than.
I guess all I am saying in the end is that you should get te best parts for your budget. First think about your GPU, than CPU, than Motherboard and lastly Memory. Basically that's also going from most expensive investment to least expensive.

^ I'd also go for an i7 (running an "old" i7 2700K here...) since I too like to have some oomph-margin for the next two or three years :) The i7 should be a good match for the upcoming GPUs seeing as game engines are moving towards using more hardware threads. From what I gather, an i5 is fine as well if your budget has limits.

I'm a big fan of the i5. My laptop is getting fairly old now (about 4 years or so) and it has an i5 M520 (2.4GHz). I have 4Gb ram and an SSD and I have never considered upgrading it. I use it at work every day at the moment and I usually have several PDFs open, multiple Office 2013 documents and sometimes even AutoCad and it has plenty of performance, no hold ups at all.

So when it came down to choosing a CPU for my gaming machine I really couldn't see myself needing any more than an i5 4670K

^ Aye! We have plenty of pCARS players with i5s who aren't CPU bound, so it holds up well, and will probably do so for a good while. I've got one in my laptop (mainly used as a DAW) and I'm very happy with it :)

I guess I´ll get the Xeon or maximum an I5 with K. Because the I7 costs about 80€ more (280€) and just for playing it is a bit too much I guess.

So whats up, we got monday, no news yet, cant wait :)

Starting today, people will die to see what happens. I'm a man of my word.

When it comes to CPU speed the main thing you want is it to not bottleneck the GPU. Something like an i5 2500k or above should work well with most gpus on the market and if it doesn't you can overclock it. An i7 or xeon are overkill.
If you only plan on using a computer for gaming, then an i7 may not be needed. But, if you want a computer with more overhead for future gaming demand (who knows what's coming and required) and multi-task the i7 is the way to go. No brainer for me as I run virtualization on my computer and can use the additional cache and processing streams (i5 maxes out at 4).
The way I look at it, Intel Core i5 is made for mainstream users who care about performance, and Intel Core i7 is made for enthusiasts and high-end users.

But as I know the xeon is a cheaper i7 with same features. Only not overclockable thats why it is cheaper.

Lol I knew that countdown would be a disappointment. What a waste of hope.

Seeing the Wii U version listed for pre-order has made my day. Makes me believe it will get released in a reasonable time frame and not end up in Watch_Dogs territory.

Pre-ordered.

Where is the limited edition preorder for GameStop USA?

So, the ''five legendary cars'' and the ''Modified Car Pack'' content will only be available if you buy and/or pre-order the Limited Edition? I would like some clarification on this.

*scratches head*
