You've taken me literally. What i mean is... The reoccurring delays are a direct downplay of the quality. If you hired a builder to fix up your house, paid upfront... and the guy doesn't show. Then he re-books for another day 5 months later. Then cancels again. You probably won't want to do business with the same builder again. Even if he is the best builder in the world.
Way off on your analogy. You hire a guy to renovate your basement. He does great work but he tells you up front that he has a small crew and you only give him a small budget to work with. He begins to renovate and after tearing down a few walls finds some termites, so the project is delayed while the termites are cleared out. Couple of weeks later while drilling the floor to put up some walls, water starts coming up through the holes because the weeping tile is plugged and must be repaired. 2 weeks later it's repaired and the walls are up. Winter approaches and then you find out there isn't much heat in the basement because the ductwork is full of dust never having been cleaned...etc. etc. etc. In every construction/renovation project stuff always pops up that you didn't anticipate. Nothing every goes as smooth as you anticipate. This construction project by SMS is thousands of times more complicated than renovating a basement.
Yes you can add that to my suggestion.

However, that's no excuse to keep moving the date.

Why don't you ever hear T10 doing that? Or EPIC for that matter (when they were working on Gears)?
This isn't Forza. T10's budget is many orders of magnitude higher than SMS and they have up to 400 people working on the game as release approaches. Forza is single platform. The depth and complexity of PCars' physics model and tire model is many orders of magnitude higher than Forza. Forza has no weather, no time change.

So you have a much simpler game with many times more staff and budget and wonder why they are able to release every two years. Well there's your answer.

I got a couple of dates, mate. Which one would you like?

dates-1.jpg
Sure there dates?:odd::ouch::sly:

Because every day of developing the game costs a ***ton of money - SMS is eager to get it on the market as soon as possible. Since it is not possible, for whatever reason, they just can't release it yet.

T10/PoDi are small wheels in a bigger machine and they cut features/cars/tracks to hold a release date in no time, with the difference that we, the consumers never get to know about it.

Kunos did the cautios approach and released a skeleton of a game, labelled it beta and everything is forgiven for them.

Yes, T10 have a reputation for cutting stuff out, which has nothing to do with their schedule BTW; they routinely cut out stuff from old versions, every time a new one comes out.

I don't see why PCARS can't just get released and make updates to refine the game while offering DLC.

They also have PlayGround Studios working with them

WHich Forza Motorsport game had PG working with them? They've always released every two years, according to the date set several months pre-release. Even if it were to get delayed in some way or a longer life-cycle, they'd still have the same content in the game, due to .. well, their working with MS, business decisions have to be made with each release, irrespective of the deadline.

A couple of short delays keeps people hanging around, one longer delay makes people start to look elsewhere.

Question is, do they make the may release?

I think this is going to be THE question of the hour. One more delay after this, and many people could walk away from PCARS altogether. I don't even own a new-gen console for cryin' out loud, but this is getting to me a little!

Although what I'm about to say is speculation so it may be totally wrong but it might help understand the delays.
The devs want a solid 1080P at 60fps.
Now I believe 95% of the leg work is done however their is something called the law of dismissing returns. i think the large scale bugs and performance increases are gone so the time it takes to get a small performance boost increase and fix bugs takes longer and longer.
thus the several short delays.

Man o man, I will strip naked and EAT my hat if they roll out PCARS on X1 @ 1080p + 60 fps.

I don't care if they take over 3 years to make a PCARS game - they should set a release date, and honor it. End of story.

Still can't understand why they can't include a window WITHIN the release date to make last-minute changes.

Playground Games make the Horizon titles, Turn 10 the Motorsport titles

I don't care about a free car, I was going to get all the DLC anyway, just release the damn game! Grrrrrrrrr :)

What you don't understand is that making a game of this depth and complexity isn't like making a meatloaf. You don't throw everything into a bowl, mix it up, press it into a loaf pan, bake it, and voila, out pops a meatloaf. Do you think they are doing this on purpose just to mess with people? Do you think they want to continue delaying it? Obviously they are running into unforseen difficulties as they break new ground with a smallish dev team on a limited budget. Why is this so hard to understand?

You're right, I don't understand. I just don't.

In other related news: Johnnypenso gets butt-hurt and doesn't like anyone talking bad about SMS.

I could argue that PCars isn't orders of magnitude better in terms of physics, having a bigger budget probably means Forza can afford a bigger research department and expensive tire testing. I'd hold off of comparisons until the release of Pcars and FM6 in this case. In terms of game complexity it's not a straight cut either, PC has night and weather, but Forza has hundreds of cars. Having laserscanning also giver FM an edge in terms of tracks accuracy. But overall I agree, different team sizes, different budgets and ultimately different goals.

The strangest thing I find is that when any fan of a racing game need to get a '1-up' of sorts on the competition when they disappoint, they automatically make some over-used and pointless pop at Gran Turismo when nobody has even mentioned the game. I'm pretty sure everyone and their nan knows that PD have been a bit off the wayward path recently, we are all past the stage of enlightenment.

Then you also don't understand the difference between blind fanboy defense, and a reasoned, logical approach to understanding a difficult situation. And since you don't, please avoid resorting to uncalled for personal digs, in the midst of a reasonable discussion between adults.

And for the record, I have defended PD many times when people try to beat them up over things that are obvious limitations of the PS3 platform and T10 when people try to beat them up over choosing to make a smaller, more limited Forza 5 that is next gen from the ground up, in order to get out of the gate quicker and with a locked 1080p/60fps and on and on and on.

Best practice, announce exact release date when the game is going gold :) Before that, simply announce the year, no fuss, no delay, no drama, no backlash, no marketing disaster.

Regardless of the team size, a good management will anticipate unforeseen delays by not announcing exact date. The best management will announce exact date and never delay it. Delay is bad in any form of business.

@Johnnypenso Blind fanboy defense? Really? That's your hypothesis?

Look again, I'm not the only one upset at the release date. I could have used other games as an example where devs honor the release date. Forza came to mind immediately since it's in the same genre.

Adults... sheesh, please. If it's anyone displaying fanboism, it's YOU. Cutting SMS slack where it isn't due.

It comes down to bad decision making and nothing else.

There.

Explain that to ol' Johnny boy here.

I understand WMD members trying to defend this mess. But, the thing is, SMS had announced specific dates three times already and delayed the game. By the looks of this, by may, we might hear about yet another delay.

Point is: don't annoy your potential consumers. Don't make promises that you can't keep.

I suspect these conversations are just too deep and complex for you. You ask for explanations as to why this doesn't happen to T10 so I gave them to you. At what point did you see me say that the delay is ok and that it's good business to delay a game 3 times or that this is good for SMS and their reputation or anything along those lines? Please quote it for me so we can add that to the discussion. You see adults can carry on discussions at various levels, not everything is all emotion and carrying on and ranting and raving and along a single path. It's not all or nothing, hate or love, good or bad. I am fully capable of discussing what I believe is a reasoned an unemotional approach to the reasons for the delay on one hand, and on the other hand still not be happy about the delay.

In the future for your own sake, I suggest you don't ask for an explanation of something you don't understand, when all you really want is to rant and rave and be emotional. There's nothing wrong with that of course, you are free to do that, just don't pretend you actually want some answers when you just want to whine about stuff.

I never believed April 2 anyways - too close to April Fool's to be a coincidence. :D

Seriously though, as others have said, I would not give a release date until the game is gold. Until then, I would go no further than a quarter. This date switching is becoming a bit comical.

So what is everyone thinking as the real release time, Q4 2015?

Just out of curiosity, what system did you plan to play it on anyway? Or have you bought a next gen system? Why would you buy a game,if you have no system?

I rather have SMS delay the release than to put out a game unfinished. Lets not forget Drive Club.
Remember how it's online game play was completely broken? So imagine how upst you would all be if Project Cars would come out in a similar state. Let SMS do their job so they can put out the best racing sim to date. And no I am not a fanboy or investor.

This game has now gone from hype and excitement and wanting it to go up on the Xbox One store so I could pre-order it to caution that these guys won't be able to deliver. I'll wait a week or so after the game comes out to see what people are saying about it.

Each delay adds to the uncertainty that these guys actually know what they are doing. I'm sure they do, but from an outsiders perspective this just looks messy and unorganized.

I take it then that you'd agree that T10 is the best management between Forza and GT?

Srsly? Is that why the FM5 Nordschleife generally is considered as the worst of the bunch? It has been tuned and "optimized" on so many places to make it more accessible to average joe. And it's okay, i get that, just cut this laserscan BS.

As much as i don't mind the project experiencing delays in order to have everything working and polished when it comes out (aaah remember those days..), we have to admit that setting 2 fixed release dates and then not making it to none of them is a bit of a PR fail.

Better to take over @Ridox2JZGTE 's suggestion and put a release date out there when you are sure you have time to make it.

I don't have any issue with both, because I never preorder games. Did T10 ever delay a set release date ? I think PD did. So T10 deserve it I guess :P
PD delayed GT5 for more than a year after saying they could release it at any time. It was released half complete and took many months to really get working right. GT6 was released with most of the new major features missing, and the biggest of all is yet to be released after being told it might make it into the original game or maybe just after, 6 months later it was in beta testing, and 15 months later, not a peep for months. VGT's which were supposed to be released in the first 12 months, are less than half delivered. You have no issue with that, but feel compelled to lecture SMS on good and bad management, marketing disasters etc. Makes sense...in opposite world.

As dissapointed I'm, I understand and respect SMS for wanting to release the game in the best possible state, unlike other publishers/developers who have a bad habit of releasing games broken and patching them later. What doesn't sit well with me though is the fact that they've at this point set different release dates three times (although admittedly November 2014 was way too optimistic to begin with) and couldn't deliver ''on time''.

Personally, I would've much preferred a target Q1/Q2 2015 date from the get go instead.

Here is my 2 cents.
PD released a game with promised features we still don't have and an arse backwards tuning system.
Battlefield, that was a great launch.
Drive Club, well isn't that special, are you still waiting for the free PS Plus game?
Halo Master Chief collection, great game eh?
So if you want something along those lines, that promised a release date, only to give us half baked games and utter garbage to boot then have at it.
I'll wait thanks.

So much hate there, I don't hold any grudge or easily pissed on something. My post applies to any management from any form of business regarding release date of a product. Did I gave SMS a lecture ? My post was a few lines about good business practice, did I even mention SMS in specific ?

Publishers must be getting brutal these days with their deadline requirements.

Routine 6-12 month delays, its like at work when the boss gives you ridiculous secondary tasks for the day and then is surprised at the end of the day when you turn around and shrug your shoulders with half unfinished.
