PS3 General Discussion

That new GTHD video is on the Japanese store. It's in 1080p, get it now!

Which one was new? I just downloaded them all for the first time just now. There's three there; the Nissan, the Ferrari and the GTHD Concept. All look fantastic in 1080p. There are 720p versions if your HDTV set wont do 1080p.

They're MPEG4, and I think I can download them to my USB Flash Drive and upload them here.

Splinter Cell: DA
GTA IV
Oblivion: Elder Scrolls
Half Life 2
Ninja Gaiden
I was going to mention Splinter Cell: DA, but I can't recall if Ubisoft ever said it was going to be a 360 exclusive. And the last 3 aren't 360 games (though, truthfully, I didn't pay attention enough to Oblivian to tell if that is the 360 game or not).

It has problems. Definitely not as many as the X360, but it has problems that are few and far between.

You know, how come every time someone says something negative about the PS3, you call them a Peter Moore follower? It's getting old, and it's not funny.

You know what, this time, I didn't mean for it to be funny, and read his post again, he didn't say anything negative about the PS3.

Oh, right. If he answers, I know you will look. Everyone does. You have curiosity, like any other human being on this planet

Who are you to read my mind Duck? Why should I read posts of someone who assaulted me?

I was just stating that it was technically accurate that the Wii outsold the PS3.
Technically accurate, but it doesn't mean anything without understanding why.

That's the problem with today's ill informed, uneducated media. They see numbers and jump to conclusions without giving any thought to why, or even offering an accurate explanation.

How could the PS3 have sold more than the Wii when it had only 400,000 units available to sell at launch compared to a million Wii's? Duh.

Until a product's production meets demand no one can say how much demand really is for it. On the other hand, one possible way is to compare auction prices, and in this case more people were willing to pay a much higher premium (peaked at over $10,000) for a PS3 than they were willing to for a Wii (peaked at over $2,000).

The GTHD Concept is the new one. It begins with the yellow Evo. Yes, you can move the file to any type of storage on your PS3. I copied the file to my SD card and watched it on my computer in full 1080p glory.

(You can't do that with a 360)

I understand that. I wasn't saying anything otherwise. I was just saying that technically Time was correct. I was trying to be sarcastic about the very thing you described in your next paragraph. It was subtle humor that didn't quite work as I thought it would.

Though one could argue that much of that was due the the sheer availability of the Wii (and promised future availability) when compared to the PS3. It was pretty much common knowledge that there would be far more Wii's available by the end of the year than PS3's, so why bother fighting and/or paying stupidly high prices for one?

Sorry if it sounded differently, as I was not suggesting you didn't, but was actually agreeing with you. I was only attempting to point out how the media often spins data that it is given in order to create stories that aren't accurate.

Excellent point, although I will never begin to try and understand why anyone would pay so much for either of these consoles when in only a matter of months, even weeks, they will be able to get one for a fraction of what they payed on eBay. This is especially poignant when you consider how few games there are right now that take advantage of what the PS3 has to offer, and that later releases will already come with updated firmware updates.

Why anyone would pay such a high premium to be a Beta tester and access to a very limited supply of games is truly mind boggling. By waiting a few weeks, they not only would have a better PS3, but also have an extra $9,400 to spend on an excellent 1080p display, accessories, games, and movies. Go figure.

A question for the makers of that graph:
Where, praytell, did the extra 150 hundred thousand come from in Japan? I was under the assumption that there were only 238 hundred thousand sold in Japan.
Something stinks.
What source did you get the 238,000 sales figure from? I ask, only because I heard that number being reported last month. Sony has been shipping thousands of additional units every week to North American and Japanese retailers. That's how I got my PS3. :)

I got it from Wikipedia. I guess it depends when they stopped recording the sales data. If it is for the month of Novmber only, it makes sense. But if it is, as Wikipedia claims, up through December 10th, then I'm not so sure.
Similarly, Wikipedia claims that the Wii has sold only 450,000 as of December 17th in Japan, whereas VGCharts claim there have been 680,000 sold in Japan.

Well... it is Wikipedia.... ;)

Sort of like counting on IMDB to always have accurate information. :)

I'm not dismissing these forms of community databases, but the information they offer is ONLY as accurate as the information being supplied by those that are editing them. Granted, Wikipedia and IMDB are much better now then they used to be in policing and checking facts, but I certainly would never cite them as a definitive source for confirming a fact.

Splinter Cell: DA
GTA IV
Oblivion: Elder Scrolls
Half Life 2
Ninja Gaiden

All said to be strictly Xbox exclusive at one point or another, yet when they were no longer, the silence was there.

:) Do I get any cookies!?!
Splinter Cell: DA - It's multiplatform, being on cell phones, the GameCube, PS2, Xbox, 360, PC, and Wii. Now, if Ubisoft said that SC: DA would be next-gen exclusive to the 360, I suppose that could count.

GTA4 - Was only said to be exclusive by Peter Moore, when he was twisting words, but I'll be generous and count it.

Oblivion - If Bethesda said it'll be X360 console exclusive, it'll count.

Half-Life 2 - ...Huh? It was on the original Xbox, and it'll be on the X360 and PS3, so that doesn't count.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma - I guess that counts, even though it was on the original Xbox.

So, even though there aren't any true legitimate lost-exclusivity games like Fatal Inertia, Bladestorm, GTA4, etc, on the PS3, I guess I'll give you a cookie since it's almost Christmas.

It's a good reason not to be an early adopter of technology in general.
...Except when it comes to Nintendo, wriststraps or not.

He said "It'll have problems", which is negative, but it's a given.

Who are you to read my mind Duck? Why should I read posts of someone who assaulted me?
"Assaulted" you? Okay, now you're just blowing things out of proportions.

Interesting numbers for Sony and their PS3, since their sales do not include the European Regions...

That sounds just about right. Supposedly Sony fixed the production problems, and according to reports from everywhere, it seems that the supply is drastically flowing in.

Because they're foolish sheep.

Except the only thing technologically new with the Ninetendo was the Wiimote... the one thing so far that Nintendo is having problems with.

Speaking of which, I noticed you didn't mention the reported problem the Wiimote is having with some forms of light sources, even those from the TV, that are interfering with the Wiimote's sensor.

Nintendo's official response: "For the best performance of your Wii, avoid bright light sources behind or near the TV, shining towards the Wii remote or reflecting off the TV screen."

Probably the wrong forum, to confirm the Wii light problem, that is correct. I have a bank of track lights behind the TV that I have to run off. The Wiimote detects those lights. What's interesting, in a Wiimote setup, you can actually see the track lights showing up on the TV. There should only be two dots, instead there was the two dots as it should and a row of dots from the track lights, it was then I realized that the sensor on top of the TV for the Wii projects IR lights for the Wiimote so it can detect and triangulate the movements of the Wiimote in some cases.

So just because I said something correct means I'm saying PR crap? You don't see MS PR guys acknowledging that Oblivion and Ninja Gaiden are "lost exclusives". Or wishing for the PS3 that some things to be unified and fixed, some more good exclusive games to be announced, and a price drop so they can justify buying it. Or even giving out chocolate chip cookies for that matter.

I thought he was talking about hardware reliability, which Nintendo excels at (and now possibly Sony with it's PS3s). Like, you won't have a broken console 2 weeks after launch.

Maybe that's because I haven't even heard of the problem before? 💡

But now I know. And if that's the only real common problem, which can easily be fixed, then I'm perfectly fine with that.

I kind of was talking about hardware reliability. Here's what I know: both my Xbox and PS2 don't work correctly because of disc drive problems - not problems they had at first, but came to have later. I hear about 360's overheating, and so I don't think it's a stretch to say that the PS3 might have some problems down the road.

I will agree that Nintendo seems to consistently make reliable hardware, though.

Potentially true. However, when compared to original PS2's (brand new systems suffering from DRE's, overheating issues), the original PSP's (dead pixels, occasional button unresponsiveness) and the original PS's (melting circuit boards, random lock-ups, disc drive wearing out quickly) the PS3 is a damned fine piece of equipment.

The point wasn't missed, only that Nintendo is using older, well established hardware components.

The advanatge is greater reliability and lower costs.

The disadvantage is that the hardware underperforms, is incapable of tasks that newer hardware is capable of, and becomes obsolete much faster.

Good points. It is also worth pointing out that many of the XB360 overheating problems surfaced immeadiately... So far so good regarding PS3 overheating - which is frankly surprising considering that the XB360 even has the advantage of having an external power brick.

I can't believe I'm doing this.

I'm seriously considering buying a PS3 and Resistance off eBay. That's right, the 360 fanboy might just be getting one!

You really have to see the marvel of engineering that is the Sony PS3 and it's cooling system...it's genius.
I wouldn't say genius. It (concave shape) is just so simple that it is shocking Microsoft ws too stupid to try it, instead packaging everything so tightly together.

Done. Bought a 20GB for $570 with overnight shipping. Will be getting Resistance and RR7/CoD3/Madden at Target.

Out of curiosity, besides Resistance, why did you get one if you already have a 360? Final Fantasy and MGS won't be out for a while - what other games are exclusive that you like? Just curious, don't put me on your ignore list or anything.

Really, I bought one now since I had to spend $300 on whatever I wanted for Christmas (and I couldn't keep the money), so I was really only $270 out of pocket. Since the PS3 is really the only thing I wanted, I decided to dish out the cash for one now. Not to mention I really like the fact I can put all my movies on it and view them on my PSP when I'm working out and such.

So, if I didn't have the $300 credit and such, I probably would have waited a year.

And I can finally get rid of my PS2, even if the games look like crap.

Many of us have 360's aswell so why not make it a general question? He hasn't been around these forums this long for nothing :). I didn't care much for Resistance(as you can tell by my early coments on it) but I'm hooked.... I now have a gamefly membership and I'll be getting Fullauto 2 on Tuesday or wednesday.

F1 demo crashed twice. test internet connection hangs my system if the network fails have to reboot it to get internet working again PSN is flawed but has promise. you have to update to use the PS Store.

I saw a couple of the F1 videos on gametrailers and it seems fun, but the graphics are a bit too plastic in my opinion.
