PS3 General Discussion

Cheers Duck and DN I hope some clever person or even sony show us some love in this department, how cruddy is it going to be if some fool skrews up the ps3 (thinking about the old man again) and I have to re-download the whole lot again. :(

i have a few questions about the PS3s web browser
1 does it support a wireless keyboard/mouse
2 can you get on online messaging programs ( namely meebo.com
3.can you play flash games namely stickcricket.com

thanks in advance for those who answer my questions

Well I got my 60 gig ps3 today, walked in to best buy and they had several so there was no problem, also picked up the memory card adapter (which I will sell as soon as I'm done with it) and component cables. Rented RR7 and RFOM once its done downloading the updates I'll try them out. later this week I plan to sell my ps2 and all the related gear (except for my favorite games) Never thought a video game console would ever feel so solid, like billet aluminum.

I doubt you can, but see if you can load a game save from your PS3 to your memory card reader, the opposite of its design.

I would keep the memcard adapter. Its not worth selling it for 10 bucks and then having your PS 2/3 gamesaves being corrupted and having no way to have a back-up to them back on (but thats mainly for PS2 saves)

Just keep it though...

will the few ps2 files I transfered be able to corrupt once on the hard drive? I have never had a file go corrupt in all the time I've owned a sony product

sorry for the double post but I just noticed this one, I do not see any way to do this, and I'm pretty sure its been tried before as well. This begs the question of how one would take their game save with them if they decided to go to a friends house or whatnot

take the ps3 lol. Can't you plug in a usb drive(1gb,2gb etc)

3 sleeps till my PS3 arrives (1 day before release):D

It should be in my hand in 72 hours give or take 20 mins:)

The count down begins...

As godzilla_GTR mentioned, just copy your game save(s) to a USB drive, and then copy it to a new user account on their PS3... or if they want to use it under their name, replace their save with yours. They might want to copy their game save to a different user account or onto a USB drive in the event they want to keep it for later.

BTW: This is also how you can backup your game saves. Either by copying them to a USB drive and saving them on your PC, and/or setup a new user under your account, and copy your game saves to that user's account. Unlike copying to your PC, doing it this way will not protect you should your HDD fail, and not just an individual game save file.... but if you have that kind of HDD failure, saving your game saves will likely be the least of your worries. :)

will this work with my psp's memory stick pro duo also?

I want to find a way to get the game saves back onto a PS2 memory card. But, there isn't a way except play the game over again.

I asked that same question a while back in this thread and no one knows whether it can be done...... Its a pity because it would be good to be able to put stuff back on to PS2 memory card.

ok when I tried it the memory card adapter with an 8mb card did not show up as a location that one of my ps2 files could be copied to... the usb drive and ms pro duo both showed up though so it's not too big a deal.

EDIT: If I plan on taking the ps3 to another tv where it will be connected with composite (on my TV its hooked up to component) do I need to change the settings before I turn it off or will it change automatically once its hooked up?

So you could in theory you could put them on to computer then use some other PC to PS2 card device / software (such as Datels PS2 Xport cable) to write it back to the memory card.

So this process would require alot of hardware, software and patience... PS2 > PS3 > USB > PC > USB > PS2!!

If only Sony could just firmware update the PS3 to allow stuff to be saved to mem card!

PS3 withstands hack challenge

Liz Tay, PC World

There was only one winner of an international challenge that offered a PlayStation 3 to any hacker able to attack it: Sony. Over the two-month-long competition, the PlayStation 3 was able to withstand numerous attempts by hackers worldwide, proving to the competition organiser its potential use as a server.

The challenge was first issued in November 2007 by Japanese Web host Shimpinomori to test the security of the PlayStation 3 Open Platform and the viability of using it as a heavy-duty server platform. Results came as a pleasant surprise to Shimpinomori founder, Augustin Vidovic.

"I was half expecting that someone would find a crack in the Linux setup, and it did not happen," he said. "Nobody could hack into the PS3."

And it wasn't for lack of trying. Standard hack attempts have left Vidovic with more than one gigabyte of logs full of what he calls 'unimaginative' attempts on the HTTP. Other hackers attempted brute force attacks on the SSH port.

According to Vidovic, the most notable hack attempt exploited a limitation in the number of simultaneous SSH connections that could be supported on the PS3, in order to prevent other challenge participants to connect to the SSH for a few hours.

The challenge was called to a halt on 2 January 2007 with the PS3 emerging unscathed. Vidovic said this proved the PS3's abilities to run continuously for extended periods of time without any heat problems, and can be trusted to be a good, reliable and secure server.

Vidovic now owns three PS3 machines, one of which will be used as a server, the second as an experiment development platform for the Cell processor, and the third as a game console. He is currently also researching applications and methods to set up a PS3 as a server.

Im going to pic mine up on the night of launch at 12:00 midnigh from my local store where we have it pre-ordered, Ive started stocking up on the beers and booked a few days off work :D so far I recon between myself and the old man we will have spent £3200 to play the PS3 at its semi best, all we need now its the Mission suround sound system and an AV amp and we will be done, maybe later though.

anyone?

Just keep it though...

You can back up all your game saves on any storage device (i.e. iPod, USB Thumb Drive, Compact Flash Card, etc). Seriously, it's pointless to keep the memory cards around when you can transfer the files to the PS3, then transfer them to a CF card or your HDD and back them up that way.

You can get $10 for the adapter, and $8 per memory card. Getting $18 is more valuable than having some memory cards sitting around collecting dust as "back ups" when you can do it easier (and cheaper) other ways.

thats strange... I'm pretty sure I had everything hooked up via component before I ever turned it on, but I still had to unhook it and reconnect with the included composite before setting it up. maybe its an HDMI only thing?

EDIT@ JR, plus I don't think theres a practical way to put this stuff back on the memory card without using external software and a computer so ill probably just used either the psp card of my usb drive...

Foud this, hope its what you are looking for.

The Secret Video Reset
Taken your PS3 round your mates house? or simply mpved from living room to bedroom? Unable to see your PS3's Picture because you cant change your TV settings? Simple fix: Shut down your PS3, then restart by pressing and holding down the power button. This will reset your PS3 to basic 480p mode so you'll be able to see enough to choose RGB scart, componant or HDMI

If you've already set the settings for your tv, then YES, you need to change the settings before taking it to a friend's house!

This happened to me when I took mine to my uncle's house, going from HDMI to composite. I had to go all the way back home to change it back.

hmm... three somewhat different answers:scared: well the secret video reset looks easy enough to try before hand, can anyone verify this as I'm at work?

I now have a 40gb laptop hard drive that has been here at work lying around and my manager told me to take it, the interface is ATA-6, any chance that will work on the ps3?

Here's the firmware 1.6 (aka March update) details:

The Playstation 3's next firmware update will be hitting Thursday with some major upgrades including background downloading and better Remote Play support.

The news comes by way of Loot Ninja who tracked it down from Sony of Japan. No official word yet on what or when we'll be getting in the U.S.

But this is what Ninja Loot finds the 1.60 comes with:

* Folding @Home: Now you can participate in the worldwide distributed computing protein folding experiments from Standford University, in hopes to further understand human genetics. You can access the Folding @Home application under Network on the XMB
* Internet Browser Pinpoint Zoom and Resolution Settings: You can now choose to zoom into a portion of a website if you have a huge display and can't read things, or you can set the browser resolution to a different size so everything can be viewed easier
* Full size on-screen keyboard: Makes it easier to type messages and web addresses with the controller
* Remote Plan via Wireless Access Point: People with a 20GB PS3 can now utilize the Remote Play feature with a PSP by using any wireless access point. (No official word if you will be able to use the PSP to access your PS3 at home from anywhere, maybe in a future update)
* Background Downloading from the PlayStation Store: This one is cool. It'll make a big difference when downloading things on the PS3. No longer do you have to sit and wait at the download screen forever. No official word if you can queue up downloads, or if you can load games from disc while downloading.

I can really comment on this stuff until I hear the details of the two biggest items, the background downloading and the extrended Remote Play.

Hmm they say nothing as far as backwards compatibility. I'm eagerly awaiting confirmation of visual enhancements. Or even 720p Blu ray playback.

good info duck 👍
Thanks. :)

Personally, I don't think we (US and Japan) will be getting any BC enhancements until they ditch the emotion engine and all. As for Blu-ray playback... I'm wondering about that as well.

And here's my analysis:

* Folding @Home: Now you can participate in the worldwide distributed computing protein folding experiments from Standford University, in hopes to further understand human genetics. You can access the Folding @Home application under Network on the XMB
Already knew about this, nice feature. 👍
* Internet Browser Pinpoint Zoom and Resolution Settings: You can now choose to zoom into a portion of a website if you have a huge display and can't read things, or you can set the browser resolution to a different size so everything can be viewed easier
It may be useful to a few select people, but definitely not me.
* Full size on-screen keyboard: Makes it easier to type messages and web addresses with the controller
So, instead of using the number pad thingy I can use the QWERTY format for "typing"? Definitely nice.
* Remote Plan via Wireless Access Point: People with a 20GB PS3 can now utilize the Remote Play feature with a PSP by using any wireless access point. (No official word if you will be able to use the PSP to access your PS3 at home from anywhere, maybe in a future update)
If I still had my PSP, that would be nice. 👍
* Background Downloading from the PlayStation Store: This one is cool. It'll make a big difference when downloading things on the PS3. No longer do you have to sit and wait at the download screen forever. No official word if you can queue up downloads, or if you can load games from disc while downloading.
This is where I have questions. Will it be downloading in the background only in the XMB, or can I do it while playing games (not online, of course)...? Can I queue up multiple downloads? Etc etc...

Besides, where's the multitasking we've been clamoring for? :nervous:

I don't care if I have to watch it download, I'd just better be able to continue failed ones.
