PS3 General Discussion

Does anyone have launch data on both PS3 and Xbox 360 for all the regions?
I have not seen a break down of PS3 sales for each region, but as reported in several articles, some linked earlier in this thread, as well as this one from the BBC, say that in the UK alone, 165,000 PS3's sold in the first two days, compared to 71,000 Xbox 360's and 105,000 Wii's in their first two days of sales.

In addition, they report that 600,000 PS3's sold all over Europe, while it took XB360 a month (27 days) to sell 400,000 XB360's in Europe.

Here is the best breakdown I have seen of European sales of XB360's for the first month it came out.
  • 0.15 UK
  • 0.06 France
  • 0.05 Germany
  • 0.03 Italy
  • 0.02 Spain
  • 0.04 Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland
  • 0.04 Others

  • 0.39 Total Sales from 12/5/05 - 12/31/05 (27 days)

Here is the breakdown of European sales of XB360's for 2006:
  • 0.75 UK
  • 0.31 France
  • 0.26 Germany
  • 0.17 Italy
  • 0.11 Spain
  • 0.19 Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland
  • 0.17 Others

  • 1.95 Total Sales for 2006
So far, despite being released well over a year behind the XB360 in Europe, and despite the higher cost, PS3 sales are out pacing the XB360 over the same period of time. It remains to be seen if this will continue over the next year or not.

I'm a tad confused from what people have been saying in forums...

I need a wireless keyboard now due to the length of my new Logitech not being long enough. I'm thinking of buying this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000AQMLLA/?tag=gtplanetuk-20

Do I need a USB receiver for the PS3 for it to work? If so, where do I buy one? The cost is adding up...

Edit: Or even some kind of extension for increasing the length of the current keyboard would be good enough.

No, almost all wireless keyboards come with a small USB dongle that receives the signals from the keyboard. All you have to do is insert the USB dongle into one of the USB ports on the PS3.

I have the wired version of that keyboard I use to repair PCs. It has a nice feel, it's quiet, and it's a good value.

Ah, I see. I wish they would show that in the pictures...

I think I'll buy the USB extension for a couple of £ anyway. It's not worth the fuss to get a cheap wireless keyboard, due to the problems they can have. I can't afford an expensive one right now.

I have a very similar Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse and I've had some problems with it. The batteries lasted only a week or two and then the mouse would die on me. I ended up not using them and resorting to using my laptop instead, which has now resulted in a very unpleasant RSI injury which ironically has meant a severe limit on my ability to play PS3 games. You'd be better off buying a wired keyboard and mouse IMO, since the PS3 has 4 usb connectors anyway... ironically, I have now taken the USB keyboard and mouse home and will use it with my PS3 if I can get it to work. My sister recently bought me a recharger and some rechargable batteries, so hopefully that should be sufficient for PS3 usage...

The exact issues I read on the cheap ones. Sometimes there would be a lagging problem while typing, and sometimes even skipping keys if you type fast enough.

Oh. :(

Yeah. I have an ultra-flat Logitech currently, so the USB extender will be perfect. I'll just have to buy a mouse when it's more useful for me (ie when games support it).

I just noticed that the XMB changes colour at different times of day... it's pink during the day and fades to black in the evening... any ideas if you can use your own images as wallpaper? That would be cool...

I hadn't noticed that until a few days ago when Duck mentioned it.

My favorite 'backdrop' though is that really nice looking image of Earth rotating slowy that is displayed while you are running Folding@Home on the PS3. 👍

I particularly like how you can move anyweher around the earth, zoom in and out, and they even show exactly where the sun is shinning on the Earth at that given moment. They even have 3D modeling of the major moutain ranges. That, and you see how many people all over the world are running F@H on their PS3 in real time. When they shut down, the light goes out. Very cool feature. 👍👍

What would be a good video conversion for a video in 640x360, with a video format as Mov out of these?

*480p in either AVC or MPEG4
*720p in either MKV or AVC
*QuickTime HD Mov Input

Also I am using PS3 Video 9.

Does Quicktime even work?

...Then again, I plugged in my iPod and all the AAC encoded songs actually worked, so who knows...

Four days ago I could easily load GTPlanet no problem, but now every time I select GTPlanet from the web browser on the PS3, it will not load, I've even try it 4-5 times in a row and still nothing happens.

But I have tried the following:

*Deleting current Cookies
*Clearing Cache from the Web Browser

Yet not doing this improves anything.

i have 2 questions

1) how can i play the downloaded trailers/movies from PS3 on a computer?
2) Does a PS3 get viruses?

Turn off Java Script. Works a treat.

I think the only files that a PS3 can accept over the web (as in, saving to the HDD), are images and videos. If there was a virus on a website that downloads automatically, the PS3 would see it as an .exe and not accept it.

There could very well be a different reason though. Just my guess.

It would also be pretty virus proof, as 99% of viruses are aimed at Windows.

Well, that makes sense.

You can copy the files to an external HDD or any other storage medium (i.e. USB Thumb Drive, Compact Flash Card, iPod, etc).

yes i know i can do this, but i meant how do i play the .mp4 encoded media on my pc.
