PS3 General Discussion

Just to step back to the multiplat fun, here's a comparison vid of VT3.

Notice on the 360 version, the extreme shadows in the bleachers that turn all of the audience in the shade into...nothing. Just a black shadow. ALso notice that almost NONE of the people on the sides and rears / front of the tennis court cast real shadows. Only the Tennis players cast realtime shadows, while pretty much everything else has a static shadow, or none at all.

Then notice that none of that is a problem with the PS3 version.

Also watch the Elder Scrolls comparison vids, where, once again, like all ports from 360, the 360 version has very very little shadow detail, showing only extreme darks, and regular lighting, mixed in with some bloom (for those who don't know, this is how you fake HDR).

Also notice the significantly better and more consistent lighting, and shadow detail in the PS3 version, along with better shaders, and a signifcantly more stable frame rate.

Yes, specifically, i would look at the second video in that series, the one where it shows the comparison of the old guy's face. Wait until the fighting occurs and look at the lighting in the ps3 version compared that of the 360. The ps3 is definitely superior in that aspect.

Well Been playing RR7 none stop, also picked up VF for a bit of fun. RR7 online is totally lag free, I was racing people from Japan, Spain and Canada today and experianced only one log out, and I belive this was down to the reuter in the dining room, other wise its quick and lag free and very fun.

Other games we got Motorstorm is very nice looking and play well, even the sixaxis control is fun, Virtua Tennis is loads of fun and very playable especially two player (havent tried 4 player), RFOM isnt my type of game and keyboard and mouse didnt work so Im going to wait for them to patch it so it does work (if they ever do) but it looks great, the sound is really good too. Virtua Fighter again looks great but ive only had a quick go. I havent had a really good go with F1 either, but some parts of that game really look nice.

Blu-ray movies look incredible and so do all the HD trailers ive downloaded, and GTHD is stunning at 1080p and Every bodys golf, while looking ok its still byond release quality I would say, it needs some serious AA but plays just the same as old EBG games.

Well i havnt had a day off work since i got the ps3 yet but in the times i have played it. I belive its totally worth the money. I didnt get the Xbox 360 and have upgraded from a ps2. Along with a 720p 32" LCD its awesome!.

Currently playing motorstorm online and offline and my brothers are playing tony hawks 8. Also played GTHD, though i really need to setup the G25 to get the most out of it.

should be getting this: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/TVs/Plasma/4049/auction-92535699.htm

42", 1080p, HDMI input reserve NZ$880(about US$460)
You may want to give those specs another look, or maybe you meant a different display, as the display in that link is not even 720p:

* Resolution: 852*480

While it can accept signals of higher resolutions (576P/576I, 720P, 1080I/1080P), it must downscale each of these to 852x480 in order to display them. This means for 1080p and 1080i signals you'll be loosing more than 80% of the resolution... which I assume is not what you want.

oops lol i just read the "Support 480P/480I, 576P/576I, 720P, 1080I/1080P." lol.

PC Compatible (1280*1024) Does this mean it can on pc? I might get it anyway for the time being(it's cheap enough) And then ill sell to my mate for a profit lol.

And at the same time you'll null basically every reason to get a PS3. I say you actually get a 720p native HDTV. You should be able to get one for the price of this gimped one.

Don't sweat it, it is a very common mistake. A lot of manufacturers like to emphasis "support 1080p" in the marketing of their displays, but support only means they can accept those signal not display them in their native resolution. Unfortunately a lot of unsuspecting consumers do not find this out until it's too late and are stuck with it.

PC Compatible (1280*1024) Does this mean it can on pc?
No, "compatible" is just another way of saying "support", it still will have to downscale any 1280x1024 (SXGA) signal to 640×480 (VGA) which not only means a 75% drop in resolution, but you'll find that any text is going to look very soft from the scaling.... I'm not trying to give you bad news, I just want to let you know what you might expect from this display, and give you fair warning.

BTW: I'd also add that Plasmas are already notoriously poor when it comes to pixel gap (aka screendoor), and because a 480p has so fewer number of pixels, the pixels are larger and generally so is the gap between pixels, thus creating even more of a screendoor effect... which is not a good thing.

I play on a 13" tv/vcr combo. The vcr doesnt work though. We have a bigger tv, its a 32" I believe, but its still standard def. I really wish i had a high def. display. But my dad said that maybe during the summer, he would go half in on a new hdtv. I hope it happens soon. Why do you think that I havent ever "Posted pics of my ps3 setup". Im ashamed. lol.

And although, the graphics look soooooo much better on a hdtv, the graphics still look very good on my tv.

Oh man, you're missing out a lot when playing on a 13" TV like that:indiff: , but it's good to see you still enjoy your PS3. Summer is not that far away, you'll soon be able to get a full experience out of your PS3:tup:

What's the movie playback like for DVD and BR on the PS3?

- I used to hate watching films on my PS2 before i bought a dedicated DVD player. The picture was ok, but the sound always began to 'lag' behind the picture by about half way through a film. Does this still happen on the PS3?

Yea I know Im missing out a lot. But I would rather have a ps3 and a sdtv than no ps3 and an hdtv.

The Blu-ray movie function is awesome, great picture and great sound and for example better than the 1000 EUR Samsung Bluray standalone player... for 600 EUR ( or dollar or 400 pound etc ) it is great, but of course sooner or later there will be better standalone players.

I bought the PS3 primarily as a Blu-ray player, and thus compared it to the standalone players that were currently available at the time:
  • $1,000 Samsung BD-P1000
  • $1,000 Sony BDP-S1
  • $1,200 Philips BDP9000
  • $1,300 Panasonic DMP-BD10
In all cases, the PS3 not only performed as well, but in many cases even better, especially against the BD-P1000. The PS3 is also the only player with HDMI 1.3 and the only one that can decode DTS-HD. Not bad when you consider it is nearly half the price of the other players. 👍

One big advantage to the PS3 as a Blu-ray player is the huge user base by comparison, and that unlike standalone players, the PS3 won’t be discontinued for a brand new model every twelve months. Thus Sony is constantly working on improvements via firmware upgrades. Most standalone players will be lucky to get maybe one new firmware update every six months.

The downside to using the PS3 as a Blu-ray player is that it has no IR or RF interface, so for those with Universal remotes that have no Bluetooth communication, you'll have to control the PS3 separately with its own remote, or controller.

Now newer upcoming players from Samsung and Panasonic do sound very promising, although still more expensive than the PS3. Sony has announced that they plan on releasing a new Blu-ray player that will sell for about $500, possibly even less. That said, I'm still betting the PS3 will either out shine these in price and/or performance. 👍

I agree D-N, I'm assuming it was Sony's plan to sell Blu-ray players at $1000 until there were enough PS3's out there to release there upcoming $500 player. Half price in 1 year isnt bad at all, in '08 BD-Rom players should settle around $350 if the movies are selling well. By the way those $500 HD DVD players do not output in 1080p, they are 1080i max at lease all the ones I've seen in retail.

True. Even Toshiba's $1000 HD DVD XA1 doesn't output 1080p. On the other hand, there second gen players do, and in fact their $800 HD-XA2 player comes with HDMI 1.3 and more importantly, it also has the amazing Realta HQV video processing chip from Silicon Optixs. Of course, so does Samsung's 2nd gen Blu-ray player, BD-P1200, which is also listed at $800. Because of the Realta chip, both of these players are easily the best performing upscaling DVD players on the market. 👍

The downside to the Toshiba players though is that, well.. they are HD DVD players, which is a format that due to its lower performance and lack of support from the industry, studios, and consumers, is losing ground much faster than Sony's Beta format from years ago.

This is likely the biggest reason why, despite being one of the largest financial backers of HD DVD, Microsoft continues to not release any XB360 with an internal HD DVD drive. If your biggest supporter doesn't have faith in the longevity of the format... what hope is there?

Good Point. But the 360 has such a wide fanbase. I really dont understand why so mnay 360 fanboys think the ps3 is so pointless. I have a ps3, and i dont think the 360 is pointless. The way that many people act towards the ps3 is ridiculous.

It's pretty funny – they already said that if Blu-ray wins, they'd actually make an add-on for that as well. But would Sony allow that?

According to wikipedia, bluray was invented by Bluray Disc Association:

The "Blu-ray Disc Association" was founded in 2002 by nine leading electronic companies: Matsu****a, Pioneer, Phillips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, Samsung and Sony as contrast to the DVD Forum. Spearheaded by Sony Corporation on February 19th 2002 the companies announced [1] they were the "Founders" of the Blu-ray Disc and later changed their name to the "Blu-ray Disc Association" in order to achieve more companies joining their development. Some examples of companies that signed in include Apple, TDK, Dell, Hewlett Packard, Walt Disney, Warner Bros. and Universal Music Group. At the moment the there are more than 250 members and supporters of the Association.

Does anyone think there's any chance Sony will release a patch allowing PS2 TDU to be played on PS3?

This popped up trying to go back online in MotorStorm just now, after it disconnecting me from the network just after a race:

"Error setting Playstation Network user data"

Anyone know what's going on? Don't tell me my data corrupted on their servers...

Didn't the PS2 and PC version of TDU just come out this month? It may not be on the list of BC games because it is new? If not, I'm surprised it doesn't work on the PS3, but it is a very popular series so if it isn't currently BC, I would think Atari would submit a patch to Sony to make it BC some time in the near future.

Today I came to a horrible realisation: I may own a game that won't be BC with the emulator PS3 (I'm arguing with myself over the decision to wait until Sony changes all of them to software BC). The official faq made no mention of it.
So sad.
Also, a somewhat related question:
Do current U.S. PS3s have software emulation for PS1 games?
