PS3 General Discussion

yes i know i can do this, but i meant how do i play the .mp4 encoded media on my pc.
Umm, you copy the video to a USB stick or something (Triangle > Copy), plug in said storage media to your PC, and play it in Quicktime or Windows Media or whatever you Windows users play it in.

I just had an intimate moment with my PS3. My story is as follows:

I was conducting a routine cleaning of my Playstation 3 a couple minutes ago. As I progressed through, I came to the chrome portion around the disk insert. There were a few smudges around the

logo, so I took my electronic wipe and started un-smudging the chrome. I got a little too close to the logo and it actually unscrewed a bit. I was like, "What, how cheap!" and i thought that maybe I hit it a little too hard while I conducted my vigorous cleaning. Well, I continued on, pondering on how Sony could have done a better job at fastening the little trendy logo, when I got curious and started turning it to see if it screwed off or something. Well, I turned it approximately 90 degrees clockwise to find out that it stopped there. Then, 💡 , I realized that it turned so that if I wanted to setup my PS3 vertical, that the logo wouldn't be facing the opposite direction. Then, I realized how stupid I was to think that my PS3 was less than perfect. Haha.

Really? I didnt know that.

Yep both my PS2 and my PS3 stand vertical and turning the badge just completes the look, after all it just wouldn't look right with the badge at the wrong angle.

When I go my PS3 I moved the PS2 into my kids room and its now sat horizontally, so for the first time since I bought it (at the UK launch) the badge got moved back.

Small touches like this make a difference in my opinion.

One thing that totally annoys me about the PS3 is that it seems to be magnetical towards dust and other dirt.

The console looks awesome but you see every little piece of dust on the silver and black material. Plus finger prints on the on/off button...ohh and dont get me started on white cat-hair. :yuck:

Oh, tell me about it.

I'm considering hiring a PS3 maid, someone to clean it every 5 minutes.

To the heck with the dust, the surface will leave swirl marks forever. The back where my AV cable goes is all marked up from missing the port.

What's funny is that for a few years we purposefully instructed the cleaning service never to wipe the piano down, as if you do not do it correctly you get those swirl marks in the finish. They can be buffed out, but it’s a real pain!

Since then though we now have two small children... needles to say, worrying about some small swirl marks on our piano became irrelevant when the kids got their hands on it... and occasionally running a car toy along it... :ill:

The good news is its just the clear coat finish, and can be buffed out and recoated. I don't think I would want to do that with the PS3 though.

For those that want to "try" to keep their PS3's dust and finger print free, and also prevent those "swirl" marks, use the same cleaning products sold for cleaning and polishing pianos. They are specifically designed to prevent those swirl marks. 👍

A quick question - can you turn off the alerts that tell you when your friends sign on and off? Many a great qualifying lap has been destroyed already by people popping up in the top right hand corner of the screen, distracting me for a split second, usually just as I am trying to negotiate the toughest part of the circuit... :indiff: I don't want to have to block or delete contacts just to avoid this minor irritation...

He's only had F1 2007 CI for a week and already the Nigel Mansell style excuses are being utilized

*pokes TheCracker in the forehead*

It is rather lame, but when you're "in the zone", the last thing you need is a constant reminder that someone's broadband connection keeps dropping out :P

Let me guess...that stuff is rather expensive, right?

I have the PS3 for like 10 days now and have pretty much given up on keeping it flawlessly clean...its just not possible...especially not with the cat walking by... :ill:

That's a good question. In the example you gave you are not playing online, so you can do this by simply signing off the network.

I wonder though if there is some way of turning those alerts off when you are signed on. Have you tried changing your status setting to unavailable? I wonder if that might turn off the alerts? Probably not, but worth trying if it bothers you and you don’t want to sign off the network.

Your other choice is to create another user account, and use that one when you want to be signed on and play without any interruptions. Then when you want to have access to your friends, switch users.

There is an option to turn off the alerts, I think its located in your online account preferences. (press triangle when you highlight your name in your friends list)

Have you guys noticed how some demo games are so S L O W because they access the internet and download or upload info during game play? Pay more attention when playing Hot Shots Golf 5.

I was about to install Linux on the PS3 a couple of days ago, but unfortunately it won't recognize my 200GB Maxtor external hard drive. Does anybody know of a workaround in order to back-up my data and to use when installing YDL?

For a back up, your going to need to format it to FAT32 (32GB limit) and then transfer all of you stuff from there

As for YDL 5.0, I have no idea...

Based on playtime with the Xbox version of San Andreas (and the PC versions of 3 and Vice City), I can assure you that it is perfect for that sort of thing.

yeah I remember playing GTA3 on my buddies xbox and I was confused as to why "our house" was playing while my friend was running over hookers. It's a shame the psp versions make it difficult to use your own music.

Yeah, that was a nice advantage the Xbox had over the PS2 and I hope they start to use it on the PS3. Surely it's just up to the developer, am I right?
