PS3 General Discussion

Anyway, regardless of the demo being old or not they still have control over what we see. If they cared they would've made the demo decent. On F1 the physics is of GT1 quality... Cars ride as if they are on rails and even with the aid off I never did what I thought was going to happen at 200+ mph. On Resistance, you can shoot at something forever and it won't die. There's no GoW like cover behind something system, the guns were uninspiring and well useless. Motorstorm... well that just didn't deliver period. I guess on the 360 side Forza 2 is the only one that fails but the 360 at least in the Demo department isn't as bad as the ps3. Surpisingly GTHD is promising though.

As someone who owns all three of the title you so readily condemn from the demo's I would like to comment on them.

However first I would like to address the point of demo's themselves, at best they represent a snap-shot of a game at a certain point in its development. I've lost count of the number of demos that were poor in comparison to the final finished product, and they certainly can't show the full range of features of the final game.

In regard to the F1:CE demo I would agree that its poor, I too dismissed the game based on the demo, however after being persuaded to try the final product (I had nothing better to spend the money on) I can categorically say that the finished product stands head and shoulders above the demo. The handling on the final version is extremely good and I for one am glad to actually have a racing title that is difficult this early in the PS3's life. We normally have to wait an age before one comes along, regardless of the system in question.

On Resistance I could not disagree more with you if I tried, the weapon selection is on the whole excellent, with some alternative fire modes that are actually worth having. You certainly don't need to fire endlessly at targets to kill them (that was certainly the case in Black and it didn't hurt that however) and cover most certainly is effective (apart from against the Auger). Finally RFOM is a top-notch on-line title, with massive maps and a huge number of players.

Motorstorm is a great smash and crash arcade racer, it looks very good and plays well. My main issue with it regards to the on-line lobbies, something that is being addressed in the next update. However to be fair as an arcade racer is delivers and delivers well, it may have a limited number of tracks, but all of these can be approached in totally (and I do mean totally) different ways depending on the vehicle you are using, and some of the tracks are simply huge.

I played the Motorstrom demo and frankly was unimpressed.

Visuals were not all that good IMO (some of the textures looked really bad), I didn't like the track, it didn't feel very 'open'. I wasn't expecting fully simulation physics but I was expecting them to be better than what I sampled (I maybe too picky because most of my game interests are simulation based games). Awful music was blaring so loud (I am sure I can turn that off).
Overall I Just didn't enjoy it at all.

This was a demo and I didn't spend much time with it, I am pretty confident I would enjoy it more if I sat down with it at home, but this being my first taste of the PS3 I was disappointed. My first taste of PS2 was great, GT3. :)

Saying all this I am buying a PS3 in the near future and will rent this to give it a good going through.

I've not personally played the Motorstorm demo (as it was a game I got with the PS3), but from what I know the demo track is very small, the actual full game tracks are very open with a massive number of routes, at multiple heights.

In terms of the physics, well MS is strictly an arcade game, its not intended to be a sim in any way at all, however the basic laws of vehicle behaviour are observed and the differing terrain does have a noticeable effect on them (e.g. bikes struggle in the mud).

As for the visuals, again it may be down to the demo, as apart from the shadow detail being a bit basic its generally very well done.

Resistance is just like any old gen FPS to me... Next gen is something like RSV or Gow. Those are Nex gen.

Vs the GTHD demo it does anyway, I know F2 will have a lot more once the full game is out though. It better be drastically better than the demo though that's for sure. I'm not talking about damage or customization either, I'm talking, graphics and sound.

I request an in depth explanation about what's next gen about Gow thats not about Resistance? To me lower the graphics and they are both possible on Xbox. And what so last gen about 7.1 audio and silky smooth 40 player online play?

Aaaanyway.

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/05/22/haze-becomes-a-playstation-3-exclusive/

You know that PS3 exclusive Ubisoft was working on (well, you probably don't), but it turns out it'll just be Haze that has a time exclusive on the PS3. Nothing too special, but hey, it's better than nothing.

yup, I am pretty sure they'll announce the 360 version was also in development soon, then they'll say both version will be released at the same time, then they'll say that the PS3 version will be delayed for a couple of months, then...

Haze, as of 'now' is not a 'timed' exclusive. All of that 'timed exclusive' talk is simply rumor and speculation at this point. I'm pretty sure Ubi know's multiplat doesn't work, and Haze is possibly the answer to a lack of Sam Fisher on PS3. We'll see how things pan out.

I'm in the warhawk beta

Will do! Well, at least pictures and impressions, I have no way of doing video, lol.

Edit: This is provided I'm allowed. I don't know yet what exactly I can and cannot do, but I'm pretty sure it'll be pretty open.

...Actually, Haze has been a PS3/360/PC title from the get-go.

YAY YAY YAY

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) firmware. Version 1.80 features upscaling of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set.

The capability to upscale DVDs to HD quality is a feature normally only associated with top range DVD players, and its inclusion in the latest firmware upgrade now allows PS3 owners with an existing DVD collection to dramatically enhance the viewing pleasure of their DVD collection when viewed through a compatible HD TV set1. Not only can DVD movies be enhanced to full 1080p HD quality but so too will PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games be upscaled to provide much improved gaming pleasure.

In a comprehensive update to PS3’s already impressive capabilities, Version 1.80 also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available2.

Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to seamlessly view and play rich media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, reinforcing PS3’s credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the Living Room.

A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3’s hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers.

PS3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3 with the latest Version 1.80 firmware from 24th May 2007.

Notes

1. DVD-ROM (including DVD Video content) can only be upscaled with HDMI compatible TV sets.

2. Use of Remote Play requires a powered up PS3 with Version 1.80 as well as PSP firmware version 3.50 which will be available at the end of May.

3. DLNA – Digital Living Network Alliance. For more info on DLNA, please see http://www.dlna.org/en/consumer/home

Woooo.

Awesome news, thanks Duck.

You guys with component cable may want to switch to HDMI>DVI:

Full 1080p upscaling for DVDs, PS2 and PS1 games. With upscaling, there's no need to throw away your old DVDs and PlayStation 2 games. The content will be converted to resolutions as high as 1080p, and will breathe new visual life into your old discs. DVD movies can only be upconverted using an HDMI connection.

Pretty good features coming up. I'll be great to see how much the quality will be increased on DVDs and PS2 games.

The Remote Play sounds more interesting too. 👍

never mind, I am retard, it's already in Duck's post:ouch:
No, I'm the retard. After a year of owning my TV, I just discovered it had VGA and DVI inputs. Good grief.

Now I'll be able to enjoy the DVD upscaling (and not have to switch around component inputs whenever I want to play a different console).

Here's the SCEA announcement:

LATEST PLAYSTATION 3 FIRMWARE UPDATE ADDS UPSCALING FOR PLAYSTATION/PLAYSTATION 2 GAMES AND DVD MOVIES

Remote Play on PSP (PlayStation Portable) System via Wireless Internet and Access to Media Content via DLNA Technology Also Enabled

FOSTER CITY, Calif., May 23, 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced that the next regular system software update for the PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) computer entertainment system (version 1.80) will be available on Thursday, May 24, and will add upscaling of PlayStation/PlayStation 2 games and DVD movies up to 1080p resolution. Now, in addition to displaying native high-definition (HD) content in the highest possible quality (1080p), PS3 system can turn standard definition content into a vibrant HD-quality experience.

The latest firmware update also gives PS3 owners more flexibility to enjoy their digital entertainment content where they want to. The Remote Play feature for using a PSP (PlayStation Portable) system to access photos, videos, and music on a PS3 system’s hard drive will be available from outside of a user’s own home via any accessible Wi-Fi Internet connection, upon the next PSP firmware update. Additionally, PS3 can now play back media content stored on a personal computer or digital video recorder with Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) capability over a home network.

“As adoption of HDTVs continues to surge, we know that consumers are hungry for content, and this latest firmware update leverages the PS3’s technology to deliver an HD-quality experience using the entertainment media already in your collection,” said Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing, SCEA. “In addition, we continue to enhance the PS3’s capabilities as an entertainment hub, giving consumers the option to bring their content with them on-the-go, or to stream photos, videos, and music stored on their PC to the PS3 in their living room. That’s often where the largest TV monitor and sound system is located, giving consumers the best possible entertainment experience.”

Upscaling Games and Movies
SCEA is enhancing the PS3 user experience by enabling PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games to be upscaled to HD resolution, up to 1080p. Classic games as well as recently released titles can now be enjoyed like never before. And PS3 system now has the capability to upscale DVD videos to HD quality (up to 1080p), a feature typically limited to top-of-the-line DVD players. Upscaling games requires an HDMI or component AV cable, while upscaling DVD-ROM (including DVD Video content) requires an HDMI cable and HDMI compatible TV set.

Media Content on the Move
Since November, PS3 owners have been able to stream photos, videos, and music stored on their PS3’s hard drive to a nearby PSP system. Consumers will soon have the freedom to access this media content wherever and whenever their PSP is connected to a wireless Internet access point. To take advantage of this feature, users will have to update their PSP system’s firmware to the next version, 3.50, slated for release next week. Once both systems are updated, consumers can enjoy their entertainment content wherever and whenever wireless Internet access is available, including the 7,000 T-Mobile HotSpot locations across the United States.

Other Feature Upgrades

Copying Saved Data to a Memory Card – Users can now copy saved data from
PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format software stored on their PS3 system to a
Memory Card or Memory Card (8MB) (for PlayStation 2), using their PS3
system and a Memory Card Adaptor.

Photo Printing, Viewing, and Editing – The photo capabilities of PS3 system
have been enhanced, allowing users to print digital photos stored on a PS3’s
hard drive or inserted storage media. Currently, select Epson printers connected
via USB are compatible. In addition, users will find a new type of slideshow for
displaying photos, zoom functionality and the option to crop images.

The photo editing is a welcome surprise.

And I'm guessing they'll add in 720p Blu-ray movies since it's a "bug fix" (like the PS2 game image quality problem), and those never get mentioned. Heck, maybe even 1080i games will be possible.

Thats what Ive been waiting to here! So you can download PS2 saves off the net and put them back onto your 8MB card and then back into your PS2 (if you still want to play your games on thats instead of PS3). You still have to buy that card reader thing though!

Brilliant!

Now I can finally finish playing Shadow of the Colossus without throwing up in my mouth from the awful resolution.

Does it mean I am in?
