PS3 General Discussion

Should I buy a PS3 in America?

The thing is, I have wanted to buy a PS3 but I was waiting for it to come down in price, I can only find it for £400 ($800appox) back at home, but here in California I saw it in the shop window for $600 (£300 approx) the question is, should I buy it now while I get it £100 cheaper?

Normally if I saw it 100 quid cheaper I would buy it straight away, but I am not sure currently, Firstly, I wouldn't dare putting it in with my luggage for the plane because I don't trust it will make it back undamaged, so I will put it in my hand luggage which means taking it out of its box so it fits in my bag, also is there some sort of export tax issue, I have no intention of selling it, so will I still have to pay tax if it is a used item?

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think there's an export tax but your country might charge you a import one. Over here it's a 60% tax. :grumpy:

Also your PAL PS2 games won't be compatible with an NTSC unit. I'm not sure on the PS3 games.

PS3 games will pretty much be fine at the moment, but you are right on the PS2/PS games.

In regards to bringing it back to the UK be ready to show the nice man at Customs the receipt and cough up 17.5% VAT, which would be around £52 on £300/$600, which kind of removes a lot of the bargain factor.

Plus the risk of journey damage.

Isn't that the same trailer available through PSN? Or were there other videos at that link that I missed?

And I also found a new video of Heavenly Sword which shows many things I haven't seen before:
Heavenly Bazooka? That was awesome.

Now if we can just get the Audi R8 at Le Mans as a GT:HD add-on for free download.

Yea that Uncharted video wasnt anything new.

You sure? It's the same level from the SGD event, but the actual video itself is different.
I swear to you that is at least very near the same thing as the downloadable trailer in the Playstation Store.

At a minimum there was nothing new to catch my eye.

Found some new videos:
Nice finds Duck! 👍

I still am perplexed that the R8 in GT:HD Special Edition apparently can't go over 165 on the Muslanne straight???? All I can figure is that the gear ratios were not adjustable for that demo and that the default settings are a poor match for Le Mans?

And I also found a new video of Heavenly Sword which shows many things I haven't seen before:
Judging by the way the video was shot it looks like someone with a beta version captured it and posted it on YouTube... or was this at some event?

Regardless it's a great find!

Heavenly Bazooka? That was awesome.
I just recently watched Discovery Channel's Discovery Atlas: China and they actually had a segment in the documentary showing this ancient Chinese ritual where these men must make these bamboo over-sized 'bazookas' and stuff them with explosive fireworks and then hold onto them while they launch these massive fireworks. Visually it's an incredible sight, and I'm amazed they were able to hold on to them. The one shown in that Heavenly Swords clip looks exactly like them! I do not remember what they are called, or the name of the ritual, but I recently ordered the HD version of the documentary on Blu-ray. It is back ordered right now, but when it gets shipped I'll pop it in and post more info about it if you are curious.

Any way, great idea for a weapon! :D

Why is Rainbow Six: Vegas so blurry? The textures reminds me of Goldeneye on the N64. Is this what the 360 guys call "next-gen"? Piece of **** 360 port.

Hey, I was wondering...

Should I buy a PS3? Is it worth it?

I mean yeah, it's got amazing graphics and all your friends will be at your house like every day, but you gotta pay like $600, plus $50 for every game, AND like $1000-$2000 for an HD TV! That racks up a grand total of AT LEAST $1650. I could buy 2 new computers for that, or even a very old and cranky used car.

Is it worth it?

Yes.

Is it worth it for the games?
Yes.

Is it worth it for the Blu-ray player?
Yes.

Is it worth it for the quality design, features and reliability?
Yes.

:)

BTW: While having an HDTV would be a definite plus, there are far more advantages to the PS3 then just simply filling up a display with 1-2 million pixels. Even if you are using a old 480i TV you'll still enjoy these advantages! 👍

And... if you must have an HDTV right away, you'll find without too much effort you can get very nice ones for less than $600. The 32" flat-panel LCD Sharp AQUOS was just recently selling for that at Costco, and I just bought a 42" 1080p flat-panel LCD for our bedroom for only $1,000:

For those wanting a BIG picture on a tighter budget, the best deal for large 1080p displays are rear-projection models. Samsung makes some excellent DLP models including a 67" 1080p that sells for about $1,500.... or you could spend as little as $2,500 and get a very nice 1080p front projector and have a screen 10' wide... or even just $700 on a 720p projector, with some models having over 2,000 lumens which will mean you could make a screen over 20' wide and still have a very nice looking image! :D

Yes, I was kinda disappointed with the graphic, Ubisoft needs to send some dudes to Factor 5 to learn how to program for the PS3:ouch:

That's because you're displaying the game in 1080i/p. It's a known problem, and if you set the resolution to 720p everything will clear up.

Besides, you get new maps that 360 version owners have to pay $20 for, so quit your jibba jabba.

Yes, but don't get one now. E3 is less than 2 weeks away, and Sony might announce a $100 pricecut then. You'll also still be able to take advantage of the Buy-BD-Player-get-5-BD-movies-free deal as well. Is it worth it? At this point it now is, but I'd wait a few weeks for a possible price drop that could pay for Resistance and Ninja Gaiden.

Just caught this line from that earier post:

Well first you have to compare apples to apples. If you are buying the same display, either for a computer or just with a PS3, they will be the same cost, so to compare costs you have to leave out the display.

So can you really get a decent new gaming PC for $300?

Just to get an equivalent CPU, GPU, and memory, you're looking at having to spend at the very least $1,000 on a PC, and then when you add in everything else, the PS3 easily comes off as a far better value than a PC... as far as playing games goes. If you think about it, its estimated that it costs Sony over $800 in parts at wholesale cost just to make a PS3. If it wasn't sold at a loss, and instead followed typical PC mark-up pricing, it would likely be priced at over $1,600.

I recently built my own HTPC, and even though it was very bare bones, and with no intent on using it as a gaming platform, only as a audio/video player/processor for use with our home theater projector, it still ended up costing me over $750.

I've never had to lower my resolution to improve the graphics, ever. How long did Ubisoft sit on this game and they never noticed this problem? **** it, why should I have to bother? It doesn't look great at 1280x720 either.

The Darkness looks passable. Aliasing all over and low polygon models. The story seems interesting enough for a play through.

360 ports 👎

Just wanted to post a link to http://www.jeuxvideo.com/. There's a load of Heavenly Sword pics there. It is looking a real treat. The art and design is excellent alone.

Mass Effect has realistic facial expressions etc. But HS is so much more emotional and dramatic!
Perhaps the gameplay is a little hackneyed but it's so polished I can forgive that (and I don't mind an adrenalin pumping hack 'n slash in the vein of God of War and Devil May Cry).
A must get title for me for sure!

A YouTube vid of hands on play is here. Not great quality but still..that bazooka looks great fun!

Now, that looks hawt!

And better than CG.

I agree. I didn't like at all what I saw in the last two trailers. I'm not going to get this. Probably not bother to rent it, either.

I'm waiting for Call of Duty 4.

It's because the game is natively rendered in 720p and then upscaled to 1080i/p. This is a problem on both consoles.

Honestly, passing up this game (especially since you're a gun freak Solid) is probably a mistake. You'll regret it. It's realism and tactical features are far beyond what I KNOW Call of Duty will ever offer.

Yeah, it does feature a firearm I'm quite fond of, actually. I'm just upset this game doesn't have the 'eye candy' I've been waiting for. Some of the shots I've seen in the latest trailers look just awful. Bow Wow Wow - "I Want Candy."

Like My Bro with the Fro said, ports suck.

Yeah, get it. Its gameplay is awesome and so is the online play. While the 360 version has excellent textures and some of the best looking gun models out there, it's not exactly a game like Gears of War, GRAW2, Lair, or Crysis that'll make you go "holy flippin' **** this looks awesome." It looks great, but overall it's not meant to be excellent looking. The gameplay is what matters most, and if you're going to pass up on one of the best games of 2006 because it's a port that's not up-to-par, then you're going to miss out on games you need not miss out on.

Oh, and it's time for dinner (crow):

Besides, you get new maps that 360 version owners have to pay $20 for, so quit your jibba jabba.

Looks like I'm wrong. I guess you guys aren't getting anything for free that others are paying for. The Red and Black Packs, which came on the PS3 disc for free, are now going to be free downloads for the 360. It's either good news or "bad", depending on which side of the fence you're on.

And I really hate to not sound like I'm trolling, but it looks like this year's football games (NCAA 08, Madden 08, and All Pro 2K8) are going to be 60fps on the 360... and 30fps for the PS3.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3160709

We have confirmed the Xbox 360 versions of Madden NFL 08 (August), All-Pro Football 2K8 (July), and NCAA Football 08 (July) will run at 60 frames per second, whereas the PS3 editions are locked at just 30fps. In the simplest of terms, this means that the 360 versions will run smoother and faster, and you'll have an easier time noticing subtle animations.

While we haven't had the opportunity to see the difference with EA's titles (the publisher hasn't sent us PS3 builds of either), All-Pro Football 2K8 definitely runs better on Xbox 360.

Now, you'd think Sony would be doing everything in its power to make sure these system sellers are par with -- or better -- than Microsoft's version. That's not the case, as Sony seems to have a "hey, we can do it -- why can't you?" attitude. "We have already proven that sports titles can run on the PlayStation 3 at true HD with 1080p output with NBA 07," says Dave Karraker, Sony CEA's senior director of corporate communications. "If you have questions about specific third-party games, you should speak to those publishers."

OK, we will. After seeing Sony's response, Todd Sitrin, EA's vice president of marketing sports branding, replied:

"We want to make sure that we give the best experience we can on each platform. In designing a game, there are all sorts of tradeoffs that include frame rate, visuals, features, AI, etc. Football is an extremely challenging sport to replicate because of the number of people on the field, their interaction, and the scope of the environments. As you can see, every company making a football game this year made a decision that the best experience for the Xbox 360 included 60fps whereas the best experience for the PS3 was 30fps. We certainly believe that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are our football products are outstanding experiences and recommend that each gamer look at the entire experience, not just one aspect. We think they'll be very happy no matter which version of the game they play."

Unfortunately, the folks at 2K Sports refused to comment.

So SolidFro, forgive me. You have every right to jibba jabba.

EDIT: Keep in mind 1UP is the same site that supposedly "confirmed" that David Jaffe was going to leave Sony, so don't take this as gospel quite yet.

My exact thoughts when I first played. I was ready to break the disc.

Then I noticed my TV was displaying it in 1080p...The box just says 720p/1080i. So I dropped the PS3 down to 720p and it was all fine. Textures could still use some work though.
