PS3 General Discussion

Another question: How does the PS3 connect to the internet? At the moment I have a network lead round the back of my PS2 will this plug into a PS3 and will it work? Or will I have to get a different cable/lead/other thing?
Yes, you can use the same ethernet cable, but the PS3 (except for the 20GB edition) also comes with WiFi, so if you have a wireless router then you wont need an ethernet cable. 👍

Awesome! I have a wireless router! Now I just need to win it :scared:

Update your system ASAP.........

Just the poster above, sorry, i was in a hurry.

I'm really confused......

Another question guys! Does the PS3 work vertically or not? I have seen pictures of it vertical but I am not intirely sure if it work vertically. Anyone help me out?

Also I am in desperate search of a PS3 now, I have £290 to spend and that has to include P&P. I would like it to include atleast one game unless you can download games as soon as you get it for free like GTHD, if thats free. So if you accidently come across one that I can afford please inform me!

Yes, it works vertically without any problems.

Yes GTHD is free and the Demos are free, but not much more ;)

Concerning the PS3, it's the only way to get 5.1 Surround Sound out of it ;)
Composite Cables (Component) transfers only Stereo Sound.
Not true. I'm using a surround sound system (7.1 from creative) and I don't have a HDMI-cable. You need a digital cable and connect this with the digital output port on the PS3 (the same as the PS2).

But the arcade games are so cheap anyway that it's worth buying one or two. Super Stardust was as little as £4.99, and older ones are even less.

I presume you want a used one? You won't find a new one at that price.

Nope, it's not a rumor. The PS3 is region free for PS3 games. However, it is still region locked for Blu-Ray movies and PS2/PSX games.

Does that mean you could buy a American PS3 and it would still run PAL games or not? They seem to be cheaper in the states.

Apparently some region ps3's are not multi voltage... well it says that on the back of the machine anyway, I dont know what to believe...

Allot of BD movies are also region free of sorts, out of the 20 films ive got so far 8 are region free, 3 are region locked to the UK and 9 dont specifie a region on the disk or box, so my guess is region locked.

Key

Red = Region Free
Blue = Region Lock to UK
Green = Not Specified

The Patriot
Open Season
Enemy Of The State
Pirates Of The Caribbean - Dead Mans Chest
Pirates Of The Caribbean - Curse Of The Black Pearl
Casino Royal
Big Fish
Starship Troopers

X-Men - The Last Stand
Kingdom Of Heaven
The Fountain

Blood Diamond
Mission Impossible 1, 2 & 3
The Reaping
Letters From Iwo Jima
Flags Of Our Fathers
Shooter

Ive not had chance to try any imported games but from everyone that has they say they work perfectly well, only problem is with PSN downloads, unless you have an American credit card, or any other country for that matter, you will only be able to buy from the UK store, or so I believe.

I believe LaBounti was, in a very abbreviated way, reminding you, and anyone who gets a PS3, to be sure their operating system is updated to the latest version, which is currently 1.90

Not sure if this was already posted...

Sony PlayStation Leipzig Game Confernence... http://gameplayer.se/videoplayer.php?video=7648
Thanks for the link. It appears to be a very long video... presumably the entire Sony conference?

With the new controller coming, I think it would be wise to wait for it, instead of buying the starter pack now and have 2 controller without rumble.
It's gonna be a couple of months before i can buy a PS3 (if i get the weekend job i want)

And the monitor i want for it hasn't even come out yet :) (Chimei CMV 222h)

Would it be a good monitor to use with the ps3 (and pc) according to the specs?
I hope it'll display the 1080P signal nicely, but i'll have to wait for the reviews on that one.

At the moment I am not really fussed about controllers as long as I get the console with atleast one controller I will be happy, but they are hard to get at £270 odd quid. I am watching a few that end tommorrow which look good but, who knows.

I've never heard of that make. As far as the specs, it wont be able to display 1080p. It's native resolution is 1680x1050 (WSXGA+) which means it will have to be scaled down to 1680x945, which is a little more than halfway between 720p and 1080p. The quality of the picture may largely depend on how good of a video scaler that monitor has... which for many monitors isn't all that good as they generally rely on your PC GPU to do the scaling to match the resolution of the monitor, not the other way around.

Also, for a 22" screen, it has a relatively low brightness level of only 330 cd/m2 - so that would have me concerned as well.

The good news is that at least as far as the specs go, it does have a decent contrast level (although you can never count on the published specs to be close to accurate in regards to CR levels), and it does have an HDMI input. 👍

Considering all this, I would recommend you try it out with a PS3, or any other source that outputs native 1080p video, before purchaseing it.

It definitely has a lot of potential thanks to the different "Input Connectors" BUT, the Brightness is below standard and it's not FULL HD. In fact, because of its 16:10 display 1680x1050 it is not capable to display 1080p proberly which is a resolution of 1920x1080 (16:9 ratio)

Well my TV at home is 14:9 and the 1080i picture is cut off at both sides (left & right; maybe an inch or even less). Of course, that has no effect to the graphics but it's just "not perfect"

If your main reason to buy the new display is playing with your PS3, I suggest to buy a 16:9 display. It's a nice monitor for PC's though just not the best solution for a PS3.

edit: ops, I was too slow ;)

If the monitor just makes 2 borders at the top and bottem of the screen, i don't find it a real problem.
The only good 16:9 displays i could find are 24" and larger.

Now i still have to decide between a 16:10 22" display, or maybe this one:
LG L246WP-BN

edit: nevermind, just noticed it's also a 16:10, with less input formats than the previously mentioned 22"

It certainly shouldn't be a problem, but that isn't the issue you need to be concerned about really.

As I said, it would have to scale a 1920x1080 signal to 1680x945 to maximize resolution on its 1680x1050 panel... but 945p isn't 1080p, instead its about 25% less resolution. Because the scaler has to convert 2.1 million pixels into 1.6 million pixels you risk having scaling artifacts depending on the quality of the display's scaler... thus why I aso recommended you not purchase it before testing it out, or be sure there is a decent return policy so that if you are not happy with the quality you can return it and get your money back. 👍

The Samsung Syncmaster 245BW looks decent, but i regret that it doesn't have composite, so i can't plug in my ps2.

Are there any 24" screen with a lot of inputs in the €500 price range?

edit: looking around for a bit proves good 24" monitors with the specs i want are way above my budget.
Guess i'll have to go and compare some 22" screens somewhere in a shop.

Finally! I just won a PS3 (Brand New) for £300 off Ebay! I am so happy! Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it! I will keep you informed of how it all goes once I recieve it. Thanks again

:D
