PS3 General Discussion

wonder how long it will take for him to edit that :sly:

I think it will come down to the 360 holding the game back ever so slightly from it's current full potential, while the ps3 seems to be the reason the game took longer to develop.

One thing I think needs to be remembered is that DVD9 isn't quite obsolete yet when you look at the type of games still able to fit on it's disks without too much trouble. However you can look at games like Lost Planet which will supposedly have lots of extras included once they make it to PS3

GTASA only just got onto a DVD. And the physical size of 4's playing environment is supposed to make SA's maps look like a Pacman level.

I thought gta4 is physically smaller than SA, just far more detailed and realistically proportioned

If the game was initially designed to fit on a dual layer DVD then the two versions wont have that much of a difference, if the game was done to whatever size suited them (the best it could be) there would be no problem on the PS3 due to Blu Ray's seemingly endless size but on the 360 things would have to be capped such as the graphics.

I don't see how if the game takes more than 8.5GB that its going to look the same on 360.. unless they are really clever with compression (maybe with things like the audio).

I wish it could just be like 30-40GB and so we have the full game Rockstar wanted it to be.

In a way you could argue the 360 is holding mutliplatform games back because the GB's have to be reigned it so it works with DVD!

Some dev's don't just work to the 'weaker' system, good example is Obilvion which had to be capped massively on 360 where as the PS3 version was everything and the kitchen sink thrown in.

Im sure dev's prefer to have endless space because its more annoying to cut stuff down. They probably have horrible meetings where they have to see what they are going to loose to get it on the disc!

It will be really interesting to see IV as this is a mega release and people will be out to spot the slight differences.... like me! :sly:

Robin

As I remember it, the actual horizontal playing field of IV's is actually supposed to be smaller than SA'. There will be more "vertiacl gameplay" however.

I heard some developer say that it may take up to an hour to get from one side of the map to the other, although this may not be sure. But I'am sure you will let me know if it is or not!
Also another, probably unreliable thing I heard during a flick through google, is that there is a rumor that Sony may release the in-game XMB this week or next week. Is there any truth in this?

My 360 was not horrible investment. Paying for points and XBL for a year was..... I did not buy the system and I never paid $60 for any of my former games.

By the way Joey I'm playing Diablo 2 again! Just found 3 Shaft Shops in the last 2 days and none were ethereal!.

Edit: Graphics are equally as important as gameplay Most of the budget goes there so it better to be good.

Ahh Diablo 2, Long ago, I had a level 86 hammerdin with enigma, Andariel's Visage, and a bunch of other stuff i dont remember. I wasted a lot of my life with that game. And I swear Ill never get addicted again!

Just to add, Lost Odyssey on the 360 comes with 4 discs and still needs to compress the FMV (it's rather blocky). And it has 5 languages (audio) which will certainly take up some space. Dunno if they're all Dual layer DVD's. I'm assuming not. Could the game really be nearly 32GB's in size?
As for GTAIV as it's free of FMV all the discs space is used for the game. But there's a shed load of audio. I'm hoping the PS3 version will have an install option. So there's not just extra space on the disc there's a HDD on the console, something the 360 can not rely on as not all 360's have a HDD (though who has one without a HDD nowadays?).
Still, I've not made up my mind which one I'll get. But the PS3 is certainly the most future proof when it comes to games, at least in terms of size. Perhaps it only affects epics games like MGS4, FFXIII etc. But it's still a major bonus to the PS3.

Quick question here. I'm trying to get pictures from my computer onto my PS3. I can do that no problem. Thats easy. My question is how do I get the names of the pictures onto the PS3. The names of the pictures on the PS3 after I transfer them are just random letters that mean nothing to me. Do I have to go through all the pictures and change their names or is there something I'm missing. I hope that makes sense. Thanks!

Sony unveils free graphics engine for developers

GDC 2008: Sony Unveils PhyreEngine

Sony isn't making too many waves at GDC this year, but they lifted the curtain on something awfully interesting today: PhyreEngine, a brand new - and FREE - graphics engine from Sony Computer Entertainment, designed to give developers an easier time of creating games for the PlayStation 3.

This package includes full documentation, 70+ samples and "full source code and artwork" of sample game templates. It'll work on both OpenGL and Direct3D, and utilizes PC environments that most developers will be more familiar with; a "simple recompile" is all they need to make the game run on the PS3. Sony is attempting to make the process as simple as possible, and they have promised "ongoing development and support" for anybody who wants to give PhyreEngine a try. Now, here's the intriguing part- this isn't just for the PS3. Three current titles (flOw, GripShift and DiRT) have used PhyreEngine, and two of them are available on the Xbox 360. Basically, as Joystiq put it, Sony is "indirectly contributing" to the development of games on other platforms.

This may seem counterproductive on the surface, but it's actually a great move by Sony. One of the reasons we've had crappy PS3 ports is just because developers created the game on the Xbox 360, then tried to move it over to the PS3. With PhyreEngine, those same developers can opt to make games for the PS3 first, which should yield titles that have the capability of outstripping their 360 counterparts. Sony is saying to everyone: if you decide to produce your game first for the PS3, using PhyreEngine, both PS3 and 360 owners will benefit because both versions will be better. Nifty move by Sony, yes?

GDC '08: LucasArts prioritizing PS3 dev, unleashing Force - Star Wars studio's "new baseline" will be Sony's console

Finally devs are wising up to deving on the PS3 first then porting to 360.. doing it the other way was the reason why GTAIV was delayed..:grumpy:

Rest of the article...

In recent months, the PlayStation 3 versions of many multiplatform games have been released after their Xbox 360 counterparts--or canceled outright. Others, like Grand Theft Auto IV, have seen both versions delayed because, having optimized the game first on the 360, the developers encountered difficulties with the PS3 edition.

This week at the 2008 Game Developers Conference, a major studio laid bare the pitfalls of cross-platform development on the current crop of consoles--and talked about how it plans to deal with it in the future. In an expansive and informative lecture, Haden Blackman, project lead for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, discussed which platform the company's "built from scratch" development team began work on in 2005.

"Multiplatform development was one of our biggest challenges," he told the jam-packed hall in the basement of the Moscone Center. After George Lucas famously urged the studio to "go build that game" upon seeing the first test reels from TFU, they began work straight away on Xbox 360 dev kits in late summer 2005--because that was all the studio had.

"It took a very long time for us to reach a multiplatform mentality," said Blackman. The reason? "Until early 2006," LucasArts had no PS3 dev kits whatsoever and, for the sheer sake of moving the project forward, focused on Microsoft's console. "It took months to get enough dev kits to everyone," rued the developer.

The problem was, once LucasArts finally had enough PS3 dev kits to supply the staff members that required them, 360 development of The Force Unleashed was months ahead. Worse still, the 360-optimized early version of the game "didn't translate well" when ported onto the PS3, given the differences between the hardware architecture of the two consoles and the complexity of PS3 development. This led to more complications and pushed the simultaneous launch of The Force Unleashed back further.

Now, however, the impressive-looking game is on track, and Blackman says that, after some hard-learned lessons, LucasArts now has a strategy for future multiplatform titles--develop the PS3 version first. "Our next project will use the PS3 as the baseline, and then apply that to the Xbox 360," he said. He made no mention of the other versions of The Force Unleashed, which are being developed externally.

Scott Steinberg, Sony Computer Entertainment America's vice president of product marketing, stated that virtually every third-party publisher is now developing for the PS3 first. "They all are now, since it's just easier that way," he told GameSpot. He then referenced his long tenure at Sega of America, saying, "Having recently dealt with this myself from a third-party background, I know this is the case." As of press time, Microsoft had not responded to Steinberg's comments.

That free engine thing (posted above) sounds really interesting... gosh it was even used to make dirt! Lets hope some homebrew games will crop up in the future!

Makes me wonder whether or not the PS3 version of Force Unleashed is going to suffer from the porting problems. I'm hoping that they'll be identical, since I prefer the PS3 for action/adventure games, and the Cell seems perfectly suited to all the physics stuff they're doing in that game.

Yeah it would probably be as bad as how Need For Speed has gotten... plus full of advertising!

I can imagine the gameplay would probably be like Motorstorm but with chains!.. sounds great in theory but with EA behind the project I seriously have my doubts....

Was playing NFSHP2 and also the original NFS SE the other day.. oh the good old days! :indiff:

road rash was so fun to play. I liked my baseball bat :)
if the new one will be multiplatform then probably it will suc ak at ps3 (thx EA)
better wait motorstorm 2 or PURE

Question here - I've got a buddy who received a 40GB for xmas. Apparently over the past few weeks he has experienced several lock ups while playing Madden. Has anyone else had similar issues with this combo? The only other game that he plays regularly is CoD and that doesn't seem to have the same problem, so I'm hoping this has more to do with EA's programming rather than the PS3. JIC he's not connected to the internet so has been running OS 2.0 (pretty sure).

Can't he DL the update on to a memory stick and update the PS3 from there? That's how I updated mine before internet was re-installed on my house.

But the lock-ups probably (99% sure) don't have nothing to do with that.

Could it be due to overheating?

Hmmm... yeah actually, and this will be hard to believe in 2 double-aught 8, he's got ZERO internet in the home. I know, I know, kinda scary. He loves NASCAR too, so double scary ;)

Yeah the overheating is a good point, but god we've played like 6 straight hours of CoD4 in the past without issue. And as I've seen his setup, the PS3's location does not look problematic to me.

JIC on the OS version point I did recently download the 2.1 update to a thumb drive and applied it, so he's definitely current there. Haven't heard if this has resolved the concern though. I'm still kinda hoping other's have had similar problems with Madden, you given that it is an EA developed product and all. :yuck:

I second that actually. knowing their knowledge and expertise, the game would be a total rip off, with a lot of non existing bundles and ever present glitches. i dont know why they're doing that, when they haven't even fixed their issues with both the patches for pro street yet. gheyy.

i'm prrretty sure it's EA's bunk programming. hitler's back to life in the form of EA's programming staff. complete with his reich and all. trust me, i get the same problems when i used to have the patch for pro street

Gameplay only takes you so far.... yes its important and it can make a game a classic like for example goldeneye, but given half the chance people would have both great gameplay and jaw dropping graphics, eventually the novelty of playing the 100th mario kart on Wii with sub par graphics will wear off and so will the motion control.
Considering I bought Q-Bert from the PSN I have to say I think this is mostly up to personal taste.

Im more of an eye candy guy, I will let the game off on certain things if its jaw dropingly beautiful.
I cannot, yet I will give any game a chance, despite its graphics. Personally, I think that graphics are great for marketing and getting the game out there because we are very visual. We see something pretty and stop to go, "Pretty," but if we put it in our hands and find that steering a dragon by tilting the controller sucks we move on. On the other hand people frequently overlook many casual games, but when people finally pick them up and play them their popularity will spread like wildfire if they are good, even if it is just a new way of color matching. Look at Tetris, how many times have people paid over $5 for that game?

Considering I am closing in on ten PSOne titles purchased from the PSN and a few more of the small PSN only games I think I prefer gameplay. I also love my Wii and use it for all my sports games because the gameplay of actual motion is a bigger draw for me than ultra-realistic graphics.

A good example is with GTA, it was great as it was back in the cartoony days, why bother to make it 3D or even make it more realistic with IV if gameplay is more important..... its the graphics that sells more.... well with things like the 360 and PS3.. its seen as a progression, having graphics the same as before will really put people off!
The 3D update to the GTA series was more than just graphical. They could have honestly just restarted the series after that big change. But it was a necessity because a 2-D game was not achieving their goals of pushing the envelope with both quality and content. The GTA change was a beginning for Rockstar that was taking them from just making games to making something completely different. Due to the nature of the change being soooo much more than just graphics I don't think it is a fair comparison.

Now let's look at something like say Mario games. I personally feel that Super Mario World (SNES) is the best Mario game ever and it was all due to gameplay. Mario 64 was fun in its 3-D way but for me it lost something and wasn't as fun. Super Mario Galaxy, for me gained a lot of the old feel back (even if Yoshi was missing). However its biggest lacking was in the controls, which took away from the gameplay element. I felt it took a gameplay innovation and stuck it where it did not belong. That is the main thing preventing it from being equal to its SNES counterpart.

Now, the Zelda games benefited greatly from 3D as I hated the 2D style. But in an adventure game 3D also changes gameplay for the better. However in Zelda (I have minor experience here) the fan favorites exist in past 3D games with different gameplay elements that affected the overall game, not in the newer prettier versions.

I think the gameplay vs graphics debate is one that is a combination of personal opinion and the game itself. Would Gran Tursimo be the same if it were just a pretty version of an arcade racer? How many people still enjoy past renditions? I'm currently replaying through GT1.

Let's face it graphics are important. It adds to the realism of the game, it's far more immersive & when consoles have this much power you expect the graphics to be superb. Gameplay is important and without it the game will fail no matter how good the graphics are.
Did someone say Lair?

It's a question of storage capacity. GTA4 will either be throttled back for the PS3 so it can fit on a dual-layer DVD (8Gb maximum) on both (equal graphics) or throttled back for the 360 so it can fit on a dual layer DVD for the 360 but allowed free reign on the BluRay (25Gb maximum for single layer) for PS3s (PS3 has better "content") or allowed free reign on both but comes on multiple DVDs for the XBox360 (equal graphics, but unequal price).
I believe GTA4 is supposed to be the same for both consoles, but that is why there is a new exclusive IP for the PS3, LA Noire, which developers are saying must have BD storage size because they intend to create a noire-style murder mystery game with all of 1940s era LA mapped.

I'd link the game's homepage but I will assume any site asking for age verification will violate AUP.

Odd, my picture files keep their names when they transfer. Anyway, you can change them after they are on the PS3. You may want to temporarily connect your PC keyboard if you don't have a PS3 devoted one.

When you have the photo file highlighted in the XMB push Triangle. The menu pops up on the right and you need to select Information. That will bring up the photo info and you should be able to highlight both title (or is it filename?) and album. Select the Title by pushing X. This will give you the text box so that you can change the name.

I don't know why your file names change though. How are you transferring them over?

Madden 08? 07? I have 07 on my Wii and it locks up and after some looking I found it was a common glitch across systems.

Honestly, seeing how little effort EA puts into Madden as a whole and then the even less effort they put into porting multiplatformers to the PS3 I am guessing this is a Madden issue.

I transfered them on a thumbdrive. I know I can change their names by doing what you said. Its over 1200 pictures though so doing it that way would be rather time consuming.
How did you transfer yours? Thanks
