PS3 General Discussion

Right I'm looking at buying a fan for the PS3 as it keeps getting ridiculously hot, and recently I noticed that by leaving my games next to the PS3 (Exit Vent) it was melting the covers of my games. Even to a extent of burning the cover of Burnout. Also it's covered in horrible smelly stuff coming from somewhere, don't know where and its been melted by the PS3.

I've done plenty of research and came to the conclusion that I need a fan, as they can reduce the heat being exhausted from the PS3 and it prolongs the life of the PS3 as when the PS3 heats up and then cools down it damages it's internals. So I need a fan, I play the console in the horizontal format, if that makes a difference.

I've came up with a selection of different fans.

USB-Cooling Fan Stand (PS3) From what I've read about this fan its sounds quite impressive.

Nyko Intercooler Looks cool, but there are a few negative reviews about.

If there are any other fans you could recommend then please do.

One last thing, please don't go on as some people do saying the PS3 doesn't need a fan and the technology built inside it is sufficent. Yes, the PS3 doesn't need a fan if you play for, as in the manual, for short periods of time I play heavy duty amounts of time on the PS3 and I have evidence that it is kicking out alot of heat and I don't want to break anything else because of my PS3's heat probelms.

Thanks

Speedster seriously the PS3 doesn't need any kind of extra cooling EVEN if you use it 24-7 under heavy load!

It has one of the most advanced heatsink setups ever and it will do the PS3 fine up to ridiculous temperatures.

People have done independent tests where they put a PS3 in a sauna for like a week under full load and also in a fridge.... it will work under any extreme.

Seriously I think those fans things are a waste of money, PS3's don't fail.. full stop.

Yes, I was reading the thread about it under those testing conditions minutes after my post. But then again, thats not the main reason I think I need a fan for the PS3, its not whats going on in the PS3 that concerns me, its what it is doing to everything around it.

Here's my PS3, yes currently on Lego bricks in an attempt to allow more air to access it it sits ontop of the Sky Digi box.

Ontop of the thing above PS3 is some gunk I'm not sure what it is at all. All I know is that the PS3 caused it some how.

Damage upon Colin McRae DiRT's box cover from the heat coming out of the PS3.

Burn marks on Burnout Paradise, these happened just after 3 days of owning Burnout.

As you can see, its caused damage. This isn't to say that I don't like my PS3 anymore, infact I still think it is brilliant, I'm just concerned and want to stop damage like the pictures above from happening again.

Even after my PS3 has been running for the better part of a day, I could only describe the air it's putting out as "warm". Mine is also only a few inches away from a large number of game cases, all of which are still in perfect condition.

I'd look at getting your PS3 repaired or replaced, there's clearly something wrong with the cooling system.

You're putting the games next to one of the air exits? No wonder they started to burn - since the heat is being blasted out so quickly under load it does heat up things considerably. When I had the PS3 in my room, it was sitting 1ft from the wall and the wall would heat up so much you could feel the heat coming through the wall opposite! I'm not surpried the games burned.

Well I was putting the games next to the exit vent. I'm not any more. So I'm getting the idea that I don't need a fan then? Also just out of intrest, because it's sitting ontop of the Sky Box (with the exception of the lego bricks) does that mean there is a possibility of damage happening to the Sky Box?

I reckon you should not buy a PlayStation 3 Nyko Intercooler.

The reason, why I think you should not get one: I got one a long time ago for the Xbox 360 as a gift, and it only lasted for 3 months.

I heard the intercoolers actually heat up the product.. (360 review)

I heard that they restrict airflow from the main fan, and only blow air around... And its a big chunk added, holding more heat in, not allowing it to escape fully through the vents... and From what I here, not being able to cool it down, and eventually burning something inside... MORE than a game...

💡 I don't get why someone would put their games next to any next gen console and expect they wouldn't have some kind of "wear".

When is the next likely update for the PS3 console roughly? My Birthday is at the end of March (Can hold it off until early April) and am contemplating purchasing a a 60gb from Ebay, since I will still be playing my PS2 games and my current PS2 is nearly dead. The problem is, these backward-compatible models are commanding a huge premium and I have heard that a new model with a bigger hard-drive and sporting dualshock 3 controllers is making it's way here soon. Can anyone shed some light on what I should do?

I think it'll be fine if it's on top of those blocks. Looks like there is lots of clearance below it now (since the PS3 gets very hot on the bottom too). So yeah, I don't think you need the intercooler, since it'll probably cause more damage than good.

Yeah never put games near the air vents, of course the plastic will melt if you do that.. My games are on the shelf below and the PS3 has all round ventilation (its like the only thing on its own shelf..)

As for that gunk, thats very odd and rather serious if you PS3 has caused it, are you 1000% sure it caused it and its not always being there because I would return my PS3 if it did that!

Those intercooler products just prey on people that really don't know any better, a company would never sell a console which could not operate under its own cooling in variable home environments... well apart from Microsoft...

Okay, thats good, don't want the houses supply of Sky to dissapear :scared:

I'm not 100% sure if it was the PS3, and perhaps it might have been caused from when it smelted the plastic cases and then the plastic vapours may have risen up and then stuck to the top of the stand.

I've cleaned it up though and I suppose I'll have to keep an eye out.

Thanks for all of your help.

wow i thought i was in the premium forum for a minute lmao.

And should i sell my 60gig? It's an early japanese model with the ps2 chip and i don't use BC except for kaido battle. Would i get enough for it to buy an 80gig you think?

They are quite sought after (I also have an original one) because it has the best of both worlds.... I think you could probably command a premium price enough to buy an 80GB but why would you want to when you can keep your 60GB which is in a way more advanced and just swap out the HDD.... you could even flog the old HDD...

I would keep it TBH..

Does someone know how to play MLB demo. I only know how to throw an ball and that's it. :grumpy:

Isn't that the one where you swing the sixaxis to hit... I remember keeping that demo because I thought it was a cool feature..

When the ball is pitched to you throw the sixaxis up in the air and to one side (obviously don't let go of it :scared:) and you should swing..

Wii eat your heart out!

The Wii does that sort of stuff the best since that is how it was designed. I don't really like the six axis controller to be honest. If I wanted interactivity like that I would play the Wii.

You don't need an external fan at all, they will do far more harm than good. The bit I have highlighted in your post is not a problem at all, the PS3 heatsink and fan pushing air outside of the unit is exactly what you want and what it is designed to do. Hot air inside would be a problem, hot air outside is not a problem, by shifting the hot air out its pulling cooler air in, and your PS3stays nice and happy.

Take a look at this (mentioned by a few)...

http://www.ps3vault.com/how-to-kill-a-ps3-console-1975

...if one can stand that without an external fan then you don't need one. Just make sure all that hot air being pushed out of the PS3 has a place to go (so no putting stuff near the air vents) and it will be fine. Ventalation around kit like the PS3 is vital, and not reserved for it alone, Sky+ boxes, Home Cinema amp, DVD Recorders, HDTVs all work best with good ventilation.

Difference being "optional" Vs "non optional". Also The Wii doesn't have a baseball game that comes close to MLB08. Wii can and does do interactivity better but thats pretty much it.

I think the current sixaxis feature is not very good and needs a major improvement before its usable. Still love the controller though.

I also discovered that the PS3 will up scale copied DVD's via component but retail DVDs do not upscale if not using HDMI. Why is Sony locking out DVD scaling through component? It makes a difference from what I've seen.

I agree, usually when games let you use the sixaxis it just seems to make the game more difficult. But it's nice that you can turn it off.

Motorstorm, you press start during a race, scroll down to "Motion Sensitivity press left/right until it says "OFF"
