PS3 General Discussion

Yeah, what TB said.

I think the external drive has to be plugged into the PC you are running your media server from. And then make sure to add it to the WMP11 library.

If Server 2003 can run WMP11, set it up the same way as you have on the Vista machine. Then on the PS3 you'll have 2 media servers listed. If it can't, there are other programs you can use, and one of those might work with Server 2003. I believe FK is using one of those (Nero, if I'm not mistaken).

WMP9 is the newest for Server 2003. I do have the newest Nero so I guess I'll install that and give it a shot. Thanks. :)

I haven't tried it, but apparently a lot of people like TVersity. You could try that one as well and see which one works better for you.

I did try that but I didn't have any luck with the PS3 finding it. The program itself wasn't too user friendly either.

Edit: Ok, I have Nero installed and the right directories being shared. The PS3 sees the new media share but it only comes up with "There are no tracks." under every category.

*sigh*

I'll let someone else field this as I have zero experience with it.

Of course, that hasn't stopped me in the past...

:D

Actually after a little bit of time (I guess for Nero to index the media) all of the files have started showing. But when I try to play any of it I get the error message "A DLNA protocol error (2104) has occurred" in the top right and then a separate error in the XMB (looking like when you press the PS button) saying:

Media Server Error:
A network error has occurred.
(80710092)

Halp!

Edit: Okay, I realized what is happening...Nero keeps crashing out. Ugh.

That would be correct, sir.

I have Nero setup to launch on Windows startup and to precache everything so that in the time it would take me to boot up my computer and then go to the living room to the PS3 it is nearly ready to go. Since I usually just keep my PC in sleep mode I rarely ever have any wait.

I do the precaching because I have Nero setup to transcode on the fly and the precaching prevents any lag this might cause.

I have no clue why Nero might be crashing on your system. It has worked beautifully for me. Definitely smoother than WMP11. And having no experience with Server 2003 I cannot say.

One question though: are you running a Lynksys router? For some reason Lynksys and the PS3 do not play well together and you have to tweak your settings a bit. If that is the case I can send you the link on how to adjust your settings and that may help.

While the settings adjustments are a pain for just media server usage they are actually something that should be done in order to help voice chat in games run better.

I have a Lynksys router and you are right the PS3 doesn't seem to like it for whatever reason. I pretty much gave up on streaming media off the PC through the PS3 and just went to using the 360 which is hardwired in. Can I have the link to adjust this please?

http://maikelv.be/blog/2007/10/27/ps3-and-linksys-wrt54g-the-solution-2/

This one is what I used, but there are tons of them in the Playstation and Lynksys help forums. The only connection problems I have had since doing this have been ISP related and have all been solved by rebooting the router and then the system.

Basically it is just setting up port forwarding (which Amar just said is suggested for GT5 Prologue anyway) and then disabling UPnP on your router.

The UPnP on Lynksys for makes the PS3 refresh the connection every so often for some reason and so streaming is nearly impossible.

The port forwarding makes the gaming applications run much smoother.

From everything I have seen Sony blames Cisco and Cisco blames Sony and neither want to add a fix in a firmware update because then they would being saying it is their own fault. My guess is that it is a Lynksys design thing because the PS3 has no major problems with other brands.

Thanks for the link. I have like 500GB of movies, tv shows, and videos on my PC that I would like to watch and since my PS3 is more or less my all in one media centre I figure I should try to get it working.

Just plug it into a router and you're done.

That's all I did. I had to jump through hoops to get my XBox 360 to work with my PC. My PS3 was a much more simplified affair. I just plugged one end of an ethernet cord into my router, and the other end into the PS3. Then I just turned on my PS3, and low and behold there's an icon with my computers name on it. Opened it up, and I can watch/listen to all my files that are of the right file type (not all file types will be playable) right from the word go. No setup, no problems, just easy simple access to my files. Thank you Sony.

;)

I like wireless things though since my router is across the room from my TV. That is probably the biggest annoyance with the 360 is that it didn't have built in wireless with it.

That works too. You probably won't get the same kind of speed from the wireless, but it is a nice edition Sony was good enough to include.

;)

I think I have been stumbling over my words a bit there.

Well, that explains that, then. :)

Which part?

Plus, any TV that size will have issues with digital signals unless you go projection.

With digital signals the resolution will have to increase or anything over 60" may need to be projection, but as all the broadcast stations have just replaced, or are in the act of replacing, all their equipment to at most 1080p I don't see anything higher being used outside of gaming.

Well, the whole thing. It seems like you've got a bunch of randomly-selected ideas from low-rent industry magazines, but no real basis on how to sort it all out. Why "anything over 60"" requires projection (I'm assuming you meant front projection) is beyond me. As does the statement over why "any TV that size will have issues with digital signals" (I am also assuming that you are just confusing "digital" with "high-definition"). Are you using time spent in places like Best Buy as the basis for your views on this?

In the TV part, if you have a non projection image your pixels at a certain size begin to get noticeable. If you increase size but not pixels then you will either get bigger pixels or a bad screen door effect. At a certain point it becomes almost unbearable, but the act of projecting the image on a screen tends to hide that. (Note: I have no clue why I made a distinction about digital, as it is the same on analog SDTVs, other than digital and HD seems to be pushing big TVs a lot more.)

Yes, the screen door effect. Or, in the case of old-school CRT projectors, an apparent lack of focus. I know we're getting way off-topic here, but if you increase the image size without increasing resolution, yes, you get a less-desirable image at the same seating distance. However, that effect is still evident whether you use plasma, LCD, front-projection, or any other device. Just because you have a projector, that has no bearing on whether the pixel structure is visible or not. What you would need is a good video processor, which can be used with any type of display.

As for broadcasters not going up anymore: well, they buy a certain grade of equipment and general maintenance upgrades are done a bit at a time but in this case everything relatively switched at once and so it will be a while before any of them are ready to upgrade to a system that can do even more across the board. But then I am unsure what maximum quality the current broadcast systems are at.

Most are settling on 1080i. It markets itself "better" when advertising the station, but is easier to compress than other progressive-scan formats. A few are holding onto 720p, but the next change-over (at least 5 years from now) would be for all to move to 1080p.

Sony: PlayStation Network compromised

Electronics giant warns that "a small percentage" of download service's users might have had personal information swiped, store funds spent as a result of security breach.

April Fools Day isn't until next week, but Sony has already fallen prey to one nasty trick. The electronics giant updated the consumer alerts section of its official PlayStation Web site to say that "there has been a possibility of unauthorized access to personal information on the PlayStation Store through PCs…"

From the description given, it appears users' passwords were at risk. Given access to such passwords, unauthorized users could sign on to an account, obtain the real user's personal information, change their password, and rack up charges on the PlayStation Store. While the store saves credit card numbers, it does not display the full number to the user, so thieves would be unable to swipe credit card information for use elsewhere.

Sony said it has already fixed the issue and that the network's security has been restored. The company has contacted users that it believes may have been victims of the security breach, and suggests that concerned gamers can ensure their accounts are safe simply by logging in with their pre-set password.

If users are unable to log in, Sony is asking them to reset their passwords, check to see what unauthorized activity has taken place, and e-mail the company at PSN_account_support@playstation.sony.com for assistance.

You just HAD to post that after I made my very first purchase last night. :scared:
If the news broke today and those they believe were affected have been notified already then I would assume it was fixed before last night.

Out of pure curiosity, what did you buy?

Is that a real bowling league or a HVB league?

They have the same content we do as far as I know. But I think there are a few other add-ons for Motorstorm, but I don't know what was in that pack.

I think there was the Coyote Weekend (unsure if that was the name) pack a while back that had some extra vehicles and events with an extra track.

It's the real deal on Friday nights. Now that I have learned to put some hook on the ball it's actually really fun. I had my first and second 200 games of my life last Friday!

There are two on-line tracks that I still don't have access to but it looks like I may have missed the pack for those. There are also many vehicles I see other people using that I wish I could get.

OK, a real league does not make you a loser. A virtual league makes you a Wii owner........and old.

They did have a few special items around Christmas. I know cars were a part of that but I don't know about tracks.

I am planning to get Rock Band soon and I will be playing catch up on the DLC for that. Much liek you with Motorstorm I am trying to find what I have already missed. That should run me a good $50.

News from the Far East manufacturing world has suggested that, despite the company's previous denials on the topic, Microsoft plans to offer a new model of the Xbox 360 equipped with a Blu-ray drive in order to better compete with Sony's PlayStation 3.

DigiTimes is now reporting that "if" Microsoft adopts built-in Blu-ray disc drives for a new version of its Xbox 360, the price to the consumer will "be lower than the corresponding production costs".

Although the Blu-ray flavoured drives are said to be around $80 more expensive than the current DVD drives in existing Xboxes, it's suggesting that Microsoft will swallow that cost so as to offer the Blu-ray equipped PS3 a run for its money in the console market.

The speculation continues that Sony may well respond with price-cuts of its own, which would obviously only be a good thing for the average gaming consumer.

I didn't know where to put this article really, so just put it here! If they have a far east source it seems very reliable as much of the console is made there. This could hurt Sony in PS3 sales but they get the money from the xbox anyway.... I seems also a given now that this will happen.

I saw in an online store(dutch), that i can buy Heavenly Sword for €25,-. Good buy?
I don't know the conversion rate but I beat it in under 6 hours. So, that is up to you as to whether that is worth it.

Sony could do this with Microsoft, then price cut and have their profit loss covered by sales of the new 360.

However, I can't imagine the 360 accepting Blu-Ray games. It would kill their current base.

If I had to guess I would say this is for the next console, which should already be finalizing specs.
