PS3 General Discussion

The data also shows heat dissipation (power consumption) between 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM 2.5" drives to be negligible. If anyone's still on the fence for that reason, then the data should clear up the misconception that 7200 RPM drives add significantly more heat to the PS3's internals.

Well the thing is that laptop drives are limited in speed(the cache for example) to prevent overheating.

The cache is not artificially limited in speed to reduce heat. The cache itself is a magnitude faster than the interface. SDR SDRAM at 133 MHz has a bandwidth of 1066 MBps. I don't know if they use DDR in hard drives now. :)

The platters are smaller in 2.5" notebook drives than in 3.5" desktop drives. It's more than just space, speed and heat: it's also power consumption and shock resistance. The smaller platters require less electricity to spin up and spin down, and they can do so more quickly in the event of an impact.

Power consumption and shock resistance aren't that big of a deal for the PS3 though. The thing even comes with less shock resistant hard drives destined for set top boxes and TiVos. A 3.5" drive would be a good upgrade if you can get a good SATA enclosure.

The PSN seems to be down here, tried it a few times, internet still works, and accessing the Store without a registered account still works but I get an error when I try to sign in??
Could this be the arrival of Home!! :P
(I couldnt resist)

Just a quick question about HDD's etc... if you have an external you need it formatted to FAT32 to work with the PS3 and seeing as XP cannot format the whole drive is it worth getting the shop to use their software (or a mac) to preformat the drive when I buy it from the shop? What format to hard drives arrive in stock?

Robin.

though my question is not directly related, it is similar. The internal drive can be formatted from the PS3 correct?

Yes, the PS3 will prompt you to format the internal drive if it is being installed for the first time. There is also a format/backup utility in system settings to erase or restore the internal drive.

For an external USB hard drive, yes. However, like the example above, you can use an external drive instead of the internal drive using a SATA adapter, and in that case, the PS3 will automatically format in it's own proprietary file system when you turn on the PS3 after replacing the internal drive.

I suspect though you mean using an additional hard drive, thus a USB hard drive, in which case it does need to be formatted in FAT32.

I believe many USB drives already come pre-formatted in FAT32. I know the last three I bought all came pre-formatted to FAT32, including the most recent one:

500 GB My Passport Elite Portable Hard Drive

The drive is so small and thin (about the same size as an iPhone) and quiet. 👍

However, even those that are not, you can easily reformat them to FAT32, even with XP or any Windows or Mac OS.

Just download any reformatting software that can reformat to FAT32. Here is a Google search result that might help you.

However, if you do not buy a hard drive preformatted to FAT32, and do not want to do it yourself, and there is a shop that will do it for you, then maybe that's the best choice for you.

Cheers D/N & TB :)

Im thinking of going WD so they might all be formatted in FAT32 stock anyway. Just in case il have a look into those formatting programs 👍

If you ask me I'd rather have a 3GB/s SATA drive with a 16mb cache. I'd get this Western Digital if I were you:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136280
That's actually the one I was looking at. But with prices dropping I am looking at some 400GB and 500GB drives now too.

Actually you can use 3.5" SATA drives if you like... which is great as you not only can then drives with much greater capacity, improved speed, but a good deal cheaper than 2.5" drives:

The downside is you wont be able to keep the PS3 in an upright position without accommodating for the external cable.
My PS3 is on its side anyway, but does running USB affect installed game speeds much?

And if I put a four port hub on that will the PS3 be able to recognize multiple drives at once as one giant drive?

I think the major downside to this is that it requires an extra power source.

I believe many USB drives already come pre-formatted in FAT32. I know the last three I bought all came pre-formatted to FAT32, including the most recent one:
In fact, I think ones that are in NTFS typically say they are preformatted for it.

Hey gys, can't you hook up an external HD to the PS3 via USB and use that as storage? esp. for Movies and Music?
Yes, but you cannot use it for anything with security DRM you purchase from the PlayStation Store, like games.

You wouldn't be using USB. It's a SATA adapter.

The links I posted should explain it, but basically what that adapter allows you to do is to move the internal SATA HDD outside the PS3... by doing so you now are no longer limited to just using a 2.5" laptop drive. Now you can use bigger, faster, and cheaper SATA drives instead... like the ones I listed.

Yes, you'll need power for an external drive now that it isn't drawing it directly from the PS3, but that can be a good thing, as it means one less thing in your PS3 that creates heat. Unless you buy an external drive, and you feel you need to protect the internal drive, you'll need to buy an enclosure for the drive that has a SATA connector, but these to can be purchased for very little if one shops around.

Sorry. I didn't read the details and from a quick glance of the image it looked like a USB port.

Hello people, i have a quick question if i may ask it here :)

Anyone knows if it is possible to output HDMI (video) and and component audio?

Because im gonna buy a new computer monitor with HDMI but sound of monitor speakers are always bad :P So if this is possible then i dont need a monitor with sound out.

Thanks in advanced for the help :)

You can output video over HDMI and audio over component, yes, but it almost sounds like your asking if you can output audio over both the HDMI and component at the same time in which case I believe the answer is no.

Thanks for the answer!

I meant HDMI video and Component Audio not both hdmi audio and component :) 👍
I was not clear enough about it, sorry.

Now only need to find a way to get the audio tulp from the component to go into computer boxes or headphone (male) :/

You can do HDMI video and RCA/Multi-AV (red + white) audio. A minijack to RCA audio cable and a female-female RCA audio adaptor will connect the PS3 to your computer.

My friend finally got her BF a PS3, a new 80GB model. I don't know how Sony did it, but this new model is even quieter than the previous models.. dead silent. I got it all set up for him and he was quite happy to play his new copy of GTA4.

Mission accomplished, Sony. Now, where's my check?

thanks! Just called my dad and he has the plugs, so gonna try today :D 👍

@Solid Fro: 👍

EDIT:

Its working! :)

Anyone knows if HDMI (Advanced DVI) is HDMI or is it something different? :P acer website is confusing me :/

R.I.P. 80GB PS3

Manufactured April 2007 - Died January 25th 2009.

It was known for always giving players a great time, no matter how much it cost itself. Alas, all of that work caused it's GPU and HDD to fail unexpectedly.

It's hard work and constant love shall be missed heavily by it's owner, Chris Little, who says that he shall get another one in order to carry on it's legacy.

Funeral services are to be determined. All save data and important files were backed up and shall be kept within an external HDD until the successor arrives.

From,
Chris.

@F1KimiFreak: HDMI is HDMI.

@WallRunner: Good job on the backups. Ack, I just read that the PS3 has a one year warranty. Seems a bit low for such an expensive device. :(

You can pay extra for that and besides it'd cost them more with a longer warranty anyways. I have the 60GB PS3 from August of 2007(that's before the 80GB came out) and it's performing nicely.

Perhaps someone can answer a quick technical difficulty I'm having. It seems when I turn my PS3 on now, every so often the screen might start flashing black. Of if I'm playing GT5:P teh screen will glitch/lag ever so slightly. Is my PS3 dying or could it be the HDMI leads or what ever they're called? It's not the TV, because normal TV and movies are fine.

First thing I would check is the HDMI cables, making sure connections are secure on both ends, and possibly testing out a different HDMI cable if you have another one.

Edit: New Avatar to mark the occasion.

Chris.

never a good sign :yuck:

Eh, just shut down and the red light started blinking in the middle of the night, upon further inspection it seems to be something to do with the GPU, as everything starts to freeze up a bit right before it shuts down.

I'm a month or so out of Warranty aswell, so I'm not sure how long it'll be before we've got $150 to send it off.

Chris.
