PS3 General Discussion

It really was impressive and it does have me worried that all we are going to see from Sony is what we already know (like the PSP Go).
That was an amazing leap of logic.

Microsoft had an imnpressive showing = Sony has nothing new to show tomorrow

I'm confused.

Now, to say Microsoft set a tough bar for Sony to outshine, that is a legitimate assumption.

Its only because Sony has a reputation for producing underwhelming news, last time they talked forever about the PS2 which was ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong, I want amazing news but im not hopeful for something on the scale of full body motion control. But they do, as you said, have the upper hand as they are going last and have seen the standard set.

Robin.

Robin's right, they gotta show something tomorrow besides the PSP Go. Lord knows Sony has the exclusive titles to show off to best Microsoft. 👍

Can anyone recommend a USB HDD enclosure for the 60 GB drive that came in my PS3? I figure I can make it into an external drive, but have no clue if it is compliant with USB bus power or not, etc.

I'm not looking for a specific model, unless you have one in mind, but just basically what I need to look for.

One of the guys I work with bought one from Newegg. If I'm not mistaken, it was the cheapest one they have and he's happy with it. If you're interested, I can ask him when he gets in.

Yeah, I was looking at Newegg, since that is where I got my new HDD, but I saw some use AC power and others use USB Bus power, if compatible. I don't know if the PS3's default drive is compatible. Had I not run across that tiny detail I would have also just grabbed the cheapest one I could find that wasn't full of negative reviews.

I don't know that he's tried the external with his PS3, but he hasn't needed to use the second USB cable (it comes with a USB Y-Cable if you need extra juice) on the desktops at work. Again, I can ask him when he's in.

Please do.

Good lord, I just realized it is almost lunch time here. What kind of weird time zone warp do you live in?

I would to considering last year the PS2 was still outselling the 360, and the PS2 version of many multi-platform games was the best selling version.

That, and based on facts, and not personal opinion, Sony showed more games, more exclusives, and more features for their PS3 than the 360 and Wii at E3 2008 despite having to split up their time between the PS3, PS2 and PSP. Oh, and let's not forget that at E3 2008, Sony not only revealed their PSN Video Store... but announced that it was available then and there, and not some time in the future.

Yes, I understand why "some people" will say it was "underwhelming news" and or that they "dropped the ball", but not only doesn't it make it true, but is just a personal opinion. They can just as easily say that ice cream sucks.

Based on how many highly rated exclusive games came out for the PS3 following E3 2008, the success of their PSN Video Store, the significant system software updates, the PSN store updates, and most certainly the success of Home and all it's updates... the PS3 brand had a pretty impressive 2008 compared to the competition.

Don't get me wrong, I want amazing news but im not hopeful for something on the scale of full body motion control.

Not to burst your bubble, but PS3 has had full body motion control via the PS Eye for nearly two years now. Yes, what they demonstrated with NATAL is a big improvement... but it's also still in development, with only tech demos to show for it so far.

But they [Sony] do, as you said, have the upper hand as they are going last and have seen the standard set.

Presentations are planned weeks in advance... not hours, so that's not what gives them an advantage. In stead, MS had the advantage because while they stayed mum about their upcoming line up, Sony and their developers have already been discussing many of their games... so MS already knew what they were mostly up against long before E3 2009.

Yet despite that, Sony has already announced more new exclusive games for the PS3 than what MS has announced... and Sony has not even started their E3 2009 presentation yet.

So even if they don't announce anything new, Sony has already "won" in terms of upcoming exclusive games... but honestly, why is it even that important to you that Sony best MS again? The PS3 is feature rich, that allows you to do many things no other console can, and has a huge library of PS3 games and PSN games, including most of the highest rated games among critics... many of which are only available on the PS3.

Hakuna matata Robin, hakuna matata. :)

The SIXAXIS was put together with stickytape and dumped on the Lair dev's for the stage demo the night before the presentation because the Wii with its motion controls had been annouced the previous day!

Well heres hoping. :)

Some of the external encloses have a AC adapter or a usb cable like this one. You can get a good cheap enclosure here.

Hahah! Back again, not to cause so much trouble though, well maybe! :sly:

I have to say, my faith in Sony has been almost completely restored, and I was very impressed with their E3 lineup! One game that really got my attention was Mod Nation Racers!

Being a fan of Mario kart on the SNES, then Speed Freaks and Crash Team Racing on the PS1, I have to say that the premise of this game looks promising.

Here are a couple of vids from gametrailers:

E3 09: Level Designer Walkthrough

E3 09: Developer Walkthrough

What do you think?

I remember that when I watched the live conference. It looked great at the time. To design and build a track like that in just 5 minutes shows real possibilities.

It sure does! I hope that level of customisation also filters down to the players character and the car he is driving. I got the impression that that was the case, but nothing concrete was said about it. 👍

Another game that I am very interested in is APB. I have ranted in the past about how poor the online element of GTA:IV was, and pondered why there was no living breathing online city where many players could play together, well it seems that EA are about to launch such a game - APB, which is developed by the guys that made GAT1, and GAT2, as well as Crackdown.

So far it is only confirmed for the PC, and there is talk of it being ported to consoles too, but the idea of this game (cops 'n' robbers), looks fantastic!

Here is a Gametrailers video of this upcoming game:

PS3's Vidzone Is Live Today
By Brian Ashcraft, 5:00 AM on Thu Jun 11 2009

Starting today, PS3 owners in Europe, Australia and New Zealand will be able to access Vidzone. The free service allows for music videos streamed directly to your PS3 or through your PSP via remote play.

The service is kicking off with over 10,000 videos — three weeks worth of videos! Besides being able to watch the videos you want to watch, it's also possible to create playlists. The service is free and can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store.
So now EU has Vidzone and Play TV? And I have a pay to use video store?

That's it! I am going to go into Home and flaunt my....um...Uncharted space.
;)

Just made a post about it in the PSN Store Update Thread:

I quite like this VideoBox thing they've released, it lets you watch videos from your favourite artists through basically and equivalent of YouTube, but better quality of course. Quite a wide range of artists on it too, the only down sides I've found is that they don't have any available videos for Muse, and apparently Green Day doesn't exist. But they have other of my favourite bands which makes up for it; blink-182, Foo Fighters, Sum41, Bowling For Soup. So some good stuff on it, it's a little bit slow at the moment but this is the first time I've used it and speeds are supposed to increase the more you use it.

So first impressions are fairly good. 👍

I tell you, if I hear one more EU user bitching and moaning about how they are always the last to get anything I think I'm going to puke. :yuck:

Any of you have any insight on why more than half my friends list has disappeared. Actually it's ironic that D-N posted right above me, because I got on today to check my messages, and lo and behold, I got a message from D-N about his new GTP_ name.

From 2008.

So far these are the problems I've come across since I turned my PS3 on for the first time in 4 months, two days ago:

1. Random save data loss in GT5P
2. Random message history gone (lots of it), with messages from 2008 and 2007 still there
3. The majority of my friends list gone, and there seems to be no particular rhyme or reason to it.
4. All my music (which has been there for years) and pictures are intact. All my downloads, save files, etc are still there. Even the GT5P files were there, but missing information.

As far as I can remember everything was just fine a couple months ago when I played and saved a PS1 disc. Any suggestions on what could have caused this?

EDIT: Wow, never mind. I was logged into the wrong name! :dunce:

I think my PS3 has just died, I went to turn it on as per usual, I tried turning it on using the controller (pressing PS button) and that didn't do anything. I then tried turning it on using the normal way of pressing the button, the green light then comes on but then it rapidly shuts off again with a yellow light coming on. Then the red power light continues to flash, from what I've read it means it's dead. It's out of waranty and I haven't got any back-ups of the stuff on the PS3. At the moment things aren't looking good.

That doesn't sound good at all, I feel for you that's exactly what happened to mine, (YLOD, launch 60gb ) I didn't have any back-ups either, so I had to start again. I had to get a refurb off Sony, the only good thing for me was mine was free, Sony have stopped offering free replacements now, it costs about £150 to get another one, unless you get lucky. I then made sure the first thing I did after I got the refurb was to buy a memory stick, so all my saves will be backed up if it ever happens again. I would recommend everyone to back-up saves regulary.

Mines a 60GB, I think launch model, I'm not entirely sure. Concerning getting a replacement, I'm just hoping it'll be quite quick I don't want to have to be waiting around 6 weeks to get another one. I can see myself backing the PS3 up frequently when I get another one, at this current moment in time I think this one is dead.

One thing I'm intrigued about is that I've currently got a game stuck in there, Race Driver Grid, what will Sony do regarding that? I want my game out of the PS3 but because of the state it's in, I can't get it out. :(

Im sorry to hear that Speedster, you can either send it back to sony or try and fix it yourself but seeing as its YLOD its probably going to be more than a blu ray drive issue.

As for getting the game out you could open up the unit and take it out, it does not affect your warranty because you no longer have any.

Robin.

Not my PS3 but a friends, what could it mean if there's no light at all, no response from the controller the power switch or the main power switch on the back. Used the same power cord and wall plug that I use my PS3 on so it's getting power fine.
