PS3 General Discussion

According to the EBgames website it is still $700AUD over here...

Price drop happens tomorrow. I know you live in the land of tomorrow, but you still need to give it 24 hours.

Or it could be that video game companies have been screwing over Australia repeatedly this generation.

I hate how prices are SOOOOO ridiculous over here. With basic conversion we should be charged 511.103 AUD as of tomorrow. We will see if that happens. It is still a crap load of money but thats just how it is and always has been here.

I'm quite curious as to what Microsoft will do.

I wouldn't expect any kind of major price cut any time soon. The loss of the "Pro" package is a little strange, but if they're going to be keeping the Elite under $299, its going to come down to what they want to give us. Bundled games, XBL titles, or something else?

The PS3 at $299 is a solid deal. There isn't any way around that. I love my 360 to pieces, but the addition of a PS3 will make for an interesting change.

THe Elite is no longer Elite in any way, unless being black makes it that. The removed the HDMI cable. Now Xbox fans say it doesnt matter but they could be the same one's who bash sony for not including it. HDMI was the best thing MS did with the hardware. The 360's price went up in the UK I read. Thats odd. I remember when the Xbox went up in price $30 and came with a $10 game. The first company ever to increase the price of a system. And they did it again.

I agree that it is a super-strange choice. My original "Pro" system came with the RGB cables that were capable of shooting off 1080p when it was needed, and to not have the "top-line" system offering it is downright strange. Especially when the cables are expensive in the first place. I understand current "Elite" models came with an HDMI cable, which is a nice touch (my Halo 3 "Pro," despite being the first console to come with HDMI, did not have it)... But to kill it, why?

But, correct me if I'm wrong, Sony has never included HDMI cables with the PS3, correct? Both situations are equally as bad, perhaps worse in the case of Microsoft to kill it entirely. Perhaps that is where the small price drop is coming from on the "Elite" package?

EDIT:

Does anyone know if you can still get the MGS4/Killzone 2 bundle from Best Buy? They don't offer it online anymore, but I can't recall seeing one in the store. Anyway, that would make for a killer deal. Then again, I guess the Wall-E Blu-Ray and Little Big Planet package isn't bad either.

Don't know what conversion you're using but I'm getting $365. It should go down to $499 here, but I'd be very surprised if that happens. I got my phat PS3 for $300 (traded in PS2 and a few old games) so I was happy with pricing when I bought it :)

Just the cable though, correct? It can still use HDMI, right? I'm looking at a 360 and the full loss of HDMI may be a deal breaker.

HDMI cables are only expensive if your Internet abilities stop at Amazon and porn. You can get them for less than $1 a foot if you know where to look.

I actually don't think it matters much, as long as HDMI is an available option. I saw an interview with a developer and he said that based on their XBox Live usage data, only half the people playing their game were playing in HD. If I recall, the Component (RGB) packaged with the 360 could also double as composite on an SD TV. The HDMI cable may have been a bit of overkill for the current market, and its removal may have been a necessity for them to drop the price to an even price point that looks good in marketing.

I am actually surprised they ever included the cable when I consider how many other items they expected you to buy separate stuff if you wanted their functionality (Wi-Fi, HD-DVD at the time). It may have been difficult to create a proprietary HDMI cable.

I am pretty sure that was a one week sale, as it appeared to just be the MGS4 bundle with Killzone added.

Its just the cable. All of the 360's that were Zephyr+ have HDMI, which is basically every 360 available these days. Even the arcade model.

Yeah, the "standard" cables made available had both Component and Composite cables included, which you would change feeds by using a "switch" on the "nubblin" (I don't know what to call it). The problem is, if I'm understanding the rumors properly, it won't even ship with the fancy Component/Composite cables anymore. Major bummer, IMO. Problem is that these rumors are coming from GameStop. Take what you want out of that.

Damn. That would have been killer. Hmmm. I'll find a legitimate excuse to buy a PS3 sooner than later.

Don't those have a proprietary connector though? You need them to be provided.

All this speculation is why I am waiting before getting a 360. I am trying to win one from Pepsi (that's how I got my original Xbox) but if that doesn't pan out I will buy one after the new pricing and whatnot are officially explained.

I just wish I could switch out hard drives as easily as the PS3.

Rumors say that it would come with the "normal" SD-cables, and that's it. Frankly, I don't put a lot of stock in the rumor, but without hearing Microsoft deny it at any point, I guess I have no idea whats true or not.

With the Elite GOTY package still available (includes 120GB HDD, Halo 3 and Fable 2, with the "standard goodies), at $399, its still a pretty decent deal. Well, assuming you don't already have H3 or F3.

Is This an Odd Question?

With my heightened interest in buying a PS3, and spending more time in here (and elsewhere) reading about the new hardware, the issues with overheating and the "Yellow Light of Death" have popped up on my radar. Is this something new that's happening? Is there any word on the frequency of this? I've already got one ticking time-bomb next to the TV, is the PS3 that much better?

I think it's mostly 60gig, that some are having problems with! Me and my son have 60gig models, neither one of us have had heating problems! And they are both 2006 models and they have been run hard! I have pretty put an average of 6 to 8 hrs on my 60gig since i got it! So it's pretty much up to you, if you really want one or not! Everything has a failure rate, and so far PS3's are low.

I've had three PS3's die on me and I'm sceptical how long this one is going to last. Over the past few days it's sounded like a Harrier Jump Jet taking off. Based on my experience, I do not think the PS3 is any more reliable than the 360 although I've had less 360's die on me, one to be exact although I'm questioning the stability of this one.

I'm almost to the point now where if either one die, I won't be replacing it. Who knows though.

I'm at somewhere between a year and a half and two years for my 80Gb with no issues so far.

So far.

Mine is literally a launch model and it doesn't seem to have any problems. And I left it on paused on KoF '98 on accident one day. YLOD (in particular) seems to be a recent phenomenon, but I don't really know that much about it.

Not an odd question. As stated, Its mostly the 60GB launch model, I have a 80gig Launch Model and have abs. no problems, no heat problems, nothing. The only thing I have a problem with is that my controllers die. Which every controller dies, I'm just stupid. If you get a new-er model you'll be fine. Mine-as well buy the slim, be the first on GTP

Castlevania Lords of Shadow looks just incredible. I'm foaming at the mouth for it and Guild Wars 2.

I honestly do not see how people are having overheating issues. A 1up.com editor had his kids, one playing on the 360 while the other accidentally turned the PS3 on, cause his PS3 to apparently overheat and kill his 360 while the PS3 kept on trucking and I had to rearrange my entertainment center because the original setup had the PS3's vents blowing on my Wii and making it too hot to touch, without being on, because it was moving hot air out that effectively. But I also have an open-air entertainment center (no doors or walls) and the ventilation in my house sweeps straight through my living room.

But from what I can tell from GTP, it appears to be only issues with launch 60GB models (mine is a 60Gb from six months after launch) and likely within certain regions. I see a large number of GTP members from the north-central US regions, like Michigan and the UK that complain, but what appears to be fewer from other areas. I almost wonder if there wasn't a bad batch or two of some part.

But as for the severity of the issue, it is not close to the 360 failure rate. Research based on store returns in 2007 showed overall PS3 failures in line with most regular electronics while the 360 was over 30%. More recent a Gameinformer reader poll showed the 360 at 54% and the PS3 at 10%. Even their Wii numbers appear to be high though, so goes the Internet.

None of it is solid, but no matter what the method is the PS3's failure rate is not close to the 360.

My personal experience is that I have had my 60GB PS3 since June of 2007 and have had zero issues. I do not know one person, of the seven others I know personally who have one, who has had a PS3 failure.

You sure have had some real crappy, luck with PS3's.

I have had zero problems with my March 07 60gig, of the 10+ people I know who have them, 1 has had a bluray drive fail after warranty, and one had a power source fail in a unit they bought on Ebay.

Interesting. Hopefully the new design would change some of that, but I may hold off on early units "just to be safe."

I wouldn't even begin to compare the failure rate of X360 to PS3. Just about every X360 owners in my circle has experienced RRoD, and one of guys who hasn't, his died about a month and half ago. There are about five of us who hasn't experienced it, and three of the systems are still not a year old. I know that at least couple of the guys had at least two die on them.

The PS3 circle, it is a much, much smaller one. But only one that has died is mine. My coworker buddy seem to think the cause was me using it heavily as a Blu-ray/DVD player. I don't know if that could be a logical cause, but I am afraid to watch my next series of "Lost" on my PS3, that's for sure.

P.S. My PS2 went on for long time, and I sold it in perfect condition. My PSTwo, the slim, that one died in little over a year. I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't weary of the reliability of PS3 Slim.

It only takes 20 watts less when playing DVDs and 10 less for Blu-Ray when compared to gaming. Still there should be less heat. Maybe Sony created a 'bake your PS3' mode for the fans when playing movies.

Well, his logic was that, when playing games, the laser does not have to work the whole time you are playing the game. But when you are watching movies, lasers stay on the whole time, wearing it out.

Again, I don't know how valid his theory is, but I sure did watch a lot of Blu-rays and DVDs, on top of probably over hundred hours(at that point) of just Call of Duty 4.

Did he blow out his PS3 with compressed air from time to time? I gotta do that to mine now.

Well, did your laser die or did the whole thing just quit working?

Um, I'd be pretty confident that the laser is in use the whole time you are playing a game. :)

In my case, just the laser. Everything worked fine, except it couldn't recognize any DVDs or Blu-ray discs.

I'd be surprised if that was true, but then again, I don't know much about computers, or PS3s. :D
