With my heightened interest in buying a PS3, and spending more time in here (and elsewhere) reading about the new hardware, the issues with overheating and the "Yellow Light of Death" have popped up on my radar. Is this something new that's happening? Is there any word on the frequency of this? I've already got one ticking time-bomb next to the TV, is the PS3 that much better?
I honestly do not see how people are having overheating issues.
A 1up.com editor had his kids, one playing on the 360 while the other accidentally turned the PS3 on, cause his PS3 to apparently overheat and kill his 360 while the PS3 kept on trucking and I had to rearrange my entertainment center because the original setup had the PS3's vents blowing on my Wii and making it too hot to touch, without being on, because it was moving hot air out that effectively. But I also have an open-air entertainment center (no doors or walls) and the ventilation in my house sweeps straight through my living room.
But from what I can tell from GTP, it appears to be only issues with launch 60GB models (mine is a 60Gb from six months after launch) and likely within certain regions. I see a large number of GTP members from the north-central US regions, like Michigan and the UK that complain, but what appears to be fewer from other areas. I almost wonder if there wasn't a bad batch or two of some part.
But as for the severity of the issue, it is not close to the 360 failure rate. Research
based on store returns in 2007 showed overall PS3 failures in line with most regular electronics while the 360 was over 30%. More recent a
Gameinformer reader poll showed the 360 at 54% and the PS3 at 10%. Even their Wii numbers appear to be high though, so goes the Internet.
None of it is solid, but no matter what the method is the PS3's failure rate is not close to the 360.
My personal experience is that I have had my 60GB PS3 since June of 2007 and have had zero issues. I do not know one person, of the seven others I know personally who have one, who has had a PS3 failure.
