PS3 General Discussion

This is not the best way to marketing a brand like that 👎 👎

Every company does it, if they just gave away new ones every time they surely wouldn't make money and would be stuck with an over abundance of broken PS3's. Instead they fix whatever is broke and send it out to someone else who has shipped them a broken PS3 and the cycle continues.

Surely if your car get's totaled you don't expect to get a brand new one do you?

The reason why I have put a thicker coat of AC5 is because there is a terribly large gap between the chips and the heat sinks when secured (a couple of mm), this is some kind of manufacturing defect on the 60GB and especially the 40GB fats. Why do you think Sony applied so much of their own grease its oozing out of the sides! On PC chips there is no such issue.

Some people have applied super thin coats (slightly transparent) on the PS3 only to find the thermal paste never made contact with the heatsink. As a result the fan would scream or some had an instant YLOD. This is why if you look on the net many peoples PS3 pictures show a thick AC5 coat. I would rather be safe then sorry.

Arctic Silver doesn't really need to cure it works out of the tube, you can use the console normally straight away. It just takes 200 hours for it to get to an optimum level of operation.

Robin.

If the gap is really that big, which is pathetic of sony, and if such a thick coat of compound is needed, I wouldn't use AS5. AS5 is made so that it fills the microscopic gaps in the metal. If the layer is too thick it will act as insulation between the heatsink and the heatspreader of the chips and create poor heat transfer.
I would use something thicker than AS5. I mean AS5 is not a thin compound by any means but something like shin etsu would probably work better in this case.

EDIT

Just read that the poor contact problem doesn't seem to affect the 60gb models so I'll go ahead with the process. I need to find where I put the Ceramique.

It is really silly that there is such a large gap, I guess in the communication between Furukawa Electric and Sony wasnt all that great. Some people have even tried sandwiching pieces of copper sheet in between the heatsinks to make contact! Whatever model people have I would still change the stock paste.

I'm sure I read somewhere that some 60GB's are affected, maybe the later ones without BC etc. The 40GB's definitely have the problem though. If you want to make extra sure you could apply the paste and then remove the heatsink to see if it made contact or use a blob application.

Personally I'm sticking with my application of AC5, even if my 60GB has a perfect fit with no gap it will just mean the paste comes slightly out of the sides, I would rather have that than YLOD. Ceramique doesn't perform as well as AC5 but doesn't have as many risks and is slightly easier to apply.

Alright.. so should I apply a thin, or thicker AS5? I have a 60gb console. I'm a bit confused now.

I would say slightly thicker (not transparent) just to be safe, but you could try thin and watch your PS3 for a while. If the fan really speeds up then it hasn't made contact. I put on about a sheet of papers thickness.

I expect my car back again with the part that failed repaired/replaced. I don't expect someone else's car :-)

If your car gets totalled you don't get any car back! All you get is money, and nothing near what the car is worth. I understand what they're doing, but it doesn't stop me worrying that the new unit will already be on its last legs. Does anyone know what kind of warranty Sony give on refurbs?

They usually offer a 3 month warranty.

If its just the Blu Ray drive that's busted they really should change the part and give you your console back, I wouldn't compare a busted laser to a written off car!

Shifting the discussion a bit, I wanted to see if anybody here had any experience using a USB hub with their PS3.

I had an extra USB hub lying around and decided to put it to use with the PS3. I have my G27 plugged into port 1 and I alternate between a USB keyboard and the PS3 Eye in port no. 2. The keyboard I'm using is an old Mac keyboard that has the additional benefit of 2 empty USB ports on the keyboard itself so I can also recharge my ear piece and controller. But I was a bit dismayed to realize that neither the keyboard nor the PS3 eye work when plugged into the hub, either together or individually.

I did a brief Google search and it seems like it should work. Has anybody else had issues or have any ideas?

Yeah, it was the BC models that didn't have this problem.
As for Cermique, the 1* difference doesn't bother me. I have a few syringes of the thing.

So, for original models we don't have to go insane with the paste?

You should never really go 'insane' with the paste, anything from slightly transparent to non transparent will be fine because the paste will even itself out.

I have an original BC 60GB and as along as the fan speed doesnt go crazy after to put it all back together and you have lots of heat coming out the back you can assume its been successful.

I would also check the timings of the fan levels (how long on level 1, 2 etc) before and after you put on the new paste so you can see if there has been any change.

Check this out:

PS3's disc-less Netflix app comes out on Monday and features a new interface and full HD options on select titles.

That's certainly AWESOME news. I just might get rid of DirecTV now. No need for it.

Here's the YTHD video at the above link...

Looks cool, shame it's not here in the EU... :grumpy:
Is there a Netflix equivalent in the EU? If so, then email them to partner with Sony on the PS3. Netflix has gone out of their way to get on all three game consoles as well as smart phone apps, and even embedded into new Internet capable TVs now.

Of course, the problem with the EU is that not everyone gets everything the same. Much like Canada and Mexico in NA.

Netflix has ruined my gaming......... or is it that I'm getting the best of the free trial? Hmm... I do not have "cable" and Hulu plus is just talking too long to go full on so I may stick with Netflix.

HD streaming looks and sounds great, its hard to not want to keep watching stuff. I just got DJ Hero and Fight Night Round 4 but the new Netflix app has me hooked. By the way DJ Hero is awesome...

Netflix is addicting when it is a remote button press away from your TV.

I watch so much stuff I wouldn't take the time to bother with now it isn't even funny. I wouldn't pay money to watch Megashark vs Giant Octopus, but if I already paid for Netflix and it is right there...

So I got the Netflix thing set up on my PS3 and thus far I'm not thrilled.

1) Why am I getting a different UI compared to that which was shown in the video? I had that one the first time I used it but now it's a different one that sucks more than the disc based one.

2) It's very slow to start up. It takes like 3 minutes to get to the menu and that's if it actually is able to connect with Netflix. It only took about 30 seconds with the disc.

Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong because at this rate I'm using it even less than the disc(which they've disabled).

I have had the same UI since it went in-system and my connection/startup times have varied, but were definitely horrible the first day.

My wife likes the interface more than the 360 one.

I so know what you mean. I went into knowing how bad a movie looked but I watched "Wrong side of town" anyway. Rob Van Dam and David Batista would have drawn red flags if I were browsing at Blockbuster. Awful movie.

My connections and start up are fine. I've never had the disc version. I'm happy for what it does not how it works :). Search is nice...

although i like the convenience of Netflix, i miss visiting local video stores (mostly during the 1980s and 1990s) to browse the titles either on VHS or DVD, and later chat with familiar folks at the store.

So, my dad logged onto his Wii, and it now features a blown-up version of the PS3's new interface and and now includes a search option. I suspect that the 360 also got this. So everything's even. It is cool that the PS3 got all these features first.
