PS3 General Discussion

I need some help, I just got a refurb back from Sony, if I log in to PSN using one of my old sub accounts, can it then become a master account? Or will I need to log in using my old master account because only it is set up to be a master account?

All this CECHA CECHE talk is confusing me.

What difference does it make? (I know its the serial code), is it for sourcing parts or something?

I do remember the AWP trophy on GTA4 that only worked on CECH models of the PS3.

The PS Store Content update is late today. Looks like they've updated the Plus stuff, but not the regular store. I hope they don't do something stupid and make the rest of us get our content tomorrow.

Can someone help me? Im looking for the 15 Years Playstation background or theme to use for my PS3. Hope someone can help :D

Looks like the paste was dead.

Thats pretty much what mine looked like, all cracked and rubbery. Having said that it worked fine like that from when I bought it.

The CECHA bit is just the model number, it usually changes when there is an increase in GB's or when there is a revision of the motherboard or CPU. A was the first one (60GB) and E was the 80GB US version.

It's still on the US store.👍

Is it anywhere on the net to download the 15 years of Playstation as a theme file (.p3t)? I know they are not restricted and can be copied to a USB drive.

Robin.

CECHA plays all PS2 games.
CECHE (and CECHC) plays most PS2 games.

For my purposes though, I was only interested in getting the system for the exterior casing, which is identical for all three of them.

Mine worked fine as well, but it does run a lot quieter then it did before anyways. Just need to get the APS231 PSU now and I'll be done.

How big are the improvements using the APS231 PSU? Like how much cooler does it run? I don't know which one was fitted to the CECHA12 but it seems to run quite cool.

Robin.

mine is running much cooler and between the fan and power unit it never goes into high gear any more.

Am I right in thinking the stock 60GB one is the APS-226 and can be visually identified by the Square vents (plenty of them) whereas the APS-231 has round vents? Where did the the 231's originally come from, the 40GB?

If the 60GB PS3 never needs the full power the 226 provides why on earth did Sony put it in there then, to generate heat for kicks!? They don't look all that expensive on ebay but if I change that and a few other things soon I'm going to have an entirely new machine!

Yeah. The APS-231 has round vents, and a lot less of them. The APS-231 also has a dull finish and a plastic bottom, and the older ones have a shiny finish and are completely metal.

Where did the the 231's originally come from, the 40GB?
Yeah, the original 40GB.

Just because last time this happened people acted like they were offended and Sony had somehow wronged them for only letting them know via the blog and Twitter I shall pass this news on:

Today the PlayStation Network will be down for Maintenance.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/10/27/playstation-network-regular-scheduled-maintenance-7/

PlayStation Network will undergo maintenance tomorrow, October 28. Maintenance is expected to start at just after 7:00 am Pacific and will last for several hours, until approximately 3:30 pm Pacific. During this time, users won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home or Account Management, and may encounter difficulty while signing in to PSN.

Please stay tuned to the PlayStation Twitter feed for a notice when PSN is fully back online.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

You have been informed.

EDIT:

For EU:

Well, my PS3 died. I'm pretty sure it is the YLOD.

To confirm, YLOD is where you turn it on, the green power light comes on and then it flashes yellow, then blinks red and beeps three times, correct?

Anyway, I am going to try the fix and then get a back up from my HDD and save up the money for a new one. Hopefully it will last that long, or only need one more fix by that time.

That's crap, I'm pretty certain what you've described is YLOD. What's the fix for it? Fingers crossed it works and you can backup, don't forget to de-authorise your PS3...I'm not completely sure but I think you can only link your main PSN account to so many machines. Hopefully you'll have a new one by the time GT5 is out.

I really need to backup my games saves at the very least more often :nervous:

The fix is to replace the thermal paste and use a heat gun to attempt a reflow. Most common cause of YLOD appears to be the solder between the CPU or GPU and the motherboard wearing out. From what I can gather online regulations for environmental reasons and child safety reasons (many regulators still consider a game console a toy, not a home electronic) have limited the console manufacturers to materials that aren't as high quality. Newer devices aren't as hot and the problems are less likely. At least that's what I gather. It may be completely incorrect.

A guy at work has a heat gun I can borrow, so I just need to find some thermal paste and time.

Good luck, My PS3 got YLOD so I can confirm that is how it happens.

Mine couldn't be revived, and so I lost my 100% GTA4 save along with over 20 other good game saves. Its a good job PS3 trophies are stored on Sony's servers or I would have lost my 19 platinum trophies too.

Good luck with the fix.

Fortunately I do back ups about once a month. So, I think that aside from a few downloads and a completed Infamous save I won't lose much.

By the way I've been hooked on Heroeos, Watched the entire first season withen 24 hours. I'm on Season 2 now. I did not know I've been missing an incredible show.

You are on Season 2 now. You will likely change your mind by the end of this season. I know I only watched it until it ended simply because it was on after Chuck.

So, my PS3 plan is as follows: Attempt to fix the system. If it works perform a fresh back-up and use it while I save up for a new one.

Savings plan: Save the money that were intended for the following games:
Uncharted 2: GOTY Edition ($50)
Rock Band 3 ($60)
Dead Rising 2 ($60)
Total : $170

Add on Christmas moneys and new PS3. My personal GT5 delay will likely end by the end of the year. If not, then later factor in LBP2 CE ($80).

Assuming my old PS3 is working, deactivate main account and setup a new one just to keep it signed in online, move it into the bedroom and use it purely for movie watching via Netflix and any of my wife's DVDs she wants ripped to the internal HDD.
