PS3 General Discussion

That may be the cheapest option...

The blu-ray drive has indeed gone, and I just called Sony to find out what they offer. Only two options, a like-for-like replacement (a 're-manufactured' 60 GB fatty with the original functions) or a 160 GB '2008 chassis' re-manufactured fat console (minus the PS2 backward compatibility and 2 USB ports), both for £131, and they take the old console away for parts. Neither appeals to me much, given that I can get a brand-new 320GB Slim with GT5 CE for £275, and without having to arrange a courier either.

So, I may end up buying a new slim and either selling my fat boy, or trying to fix it myself.

Anyone else having issues with Home? Mine keeps freezing.

I was there last night for the GT5 pre-launch event, and it was working great. 👍

Have you used Home since the 1.4 update? If not, you might try *deleting Home, then click on the Home icon and re-download and install it. You wont lose any of your settings.

* To delete Home simply highlight the Home icon in the XMB, press triangle, and select delete.

The new 1.4 update is really comprehensive. I especially like the new voice and chat features. 👍

We can now voice and text chat with everyone who belongs to the same club, no mater where each person is in Home. It used to be that everyone had to be in the same club space or personal space, and you had to be standing near the person talking.

In addition they have added "Groups" to Home, so even if you aren't a member of a club, you can form or be invited into a group, and everyone in the group can share public as well as private voice and text chats.

Due to the many new options, they published a guide to how the new voice and text chat system in Home works here:

They also have made huge improvements and added sorting options to the wardrobe feature as well as the item features. Here is a link to a guide on many of the other added features:

I have the 1.4 update. It's been freezing since Playstation did their "maintainence" yesterday. And it might be a problem with the "MCR GT5 Racing suits" as well.

I'm gutted about the death of my PS3, but I'm even more gutted for the PS3 itself... it has been a loyal servant, and it lived its entire life waiting on GT5... and just days before its dream was to come true, it bit the big one :( Sony, you have blood (well, plastic atleast) on your hands.

My thermal paste just shipped and my co-worker is bringing me his heat gun on Monday. I may be able to play GT5 on the 24th after all.

Well I just logged in and its working fine, and my wife says she was on this afternoon and it was also working fine.

Maybe you might want to delete it and re-install it anyway just in case. It doesn't take long.

Before you write that eulogy, as we have been talking about in the YLOD thread, I still think its worth it to play Frankenstein, and try and resurrect it, and if not, you might still get a decent price for it on ebay even as is. 👍

It's like electronic devices know when you are expecting to use them in some big way and then just die. I've had a camera quit working before a vacation before and my ultimate favourite was my GPS deciding it no longer felt like working in the middle of nowhere.

Murphy's Law I guess

It's working now. Seems like they were updating the login message.

Thanks for the advise. I'd hate to reinstall Home with some of the stuff I've purchased for it. (good place to spend the left over dollar or two after buying DLC packs or games.)

Its not dead yet, it just needs a transplant :) Put it on the donor list:tup: Ok my Blu-ray drived died too, a month before my warranty ran out but it would've still cost me to replace i. I just paid a shop to replace my drive. If it happens again I will get a new Slim move bundle.

You can delete and re-install Home as many times as you like and you'll still never lose anything, nor will you even lose your settings, avatars, etc. All your Home possessions are stored online, so no matter what PS3 you log in on, you'll always have your "stuff".

Your personal settings and saved avatars are kept in the main Home file saved in your Saved Data Utility folder. In addition to that file, there will also be a separate file in that same folder for every personal space you might have. These files store the information on how you have that space set up. Even if you delete these files you still won't lose any of your possessions.

In fact, by being saved data files, you can not only backup your settings and avatars, but you can use that feature to create and save an endless amount of different avatars and different personal space designs.

For instance my wife has a saved set of files of all her spaces as well as avatars decorated for the different seasons, such that all she has to do is swap out files to instantly change all her spaces.

Perhaps someone here can help me with something.
When I copy a music file from my PC to my PS3 (via Media Player) the file is bigger than the original. For example, a 7.1mb file becomes a 63mb file. What's the cause of this and is it possible to copy a file and keep the same size?
Also, when I make a copy of the music file and put it on a USB drive and then copy it onto my PS3 it says Unsupported data, even though I can play it via stream. What gives? (I'm pretty sure it's not protected or anything).

Thanks in advance.

Maybe the file type is not supported for ps3, while streaming it could be converted on the fly. Maybe the same happens via the media player it gets converted to a supported file type but to a very big uncompressed file type. What type of file do you want to play?

Thanks for the reply.
I'm trying to copy WMA from my PC where I've ripped my CD's. They're 160kbps rips too. I'm sure I've copied in the past okay. But I can't be sure. All I know is if I copy a WMA file of say 90mb it becomes 600mb on my PS3! That can't be right..

I look at my loss this way: The delay prevented me from having GT5 in the drive when my system died. I was saved from a double loss.

With GT5 coming out on Wednesday, I just realized I need to pre-order a copy. But I cannot decide on getting the Standard or Collector's Edition. Choices...

I have a question for you all...in a mad attempt to get GT5, I am risking the games of my collection (sans any Gran Turismo) to get it. All I can do right now is trade-in, and I wanted to know how much you'd think I'd get for this, although it'll be by a long shot.

Grand Theft Auto IV
Madden NFL 2007
Skate 2
Motorstorm
Red Dead Redemption
Midnight Club: Los Angeles Complete Edition
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City.

And the PS2 games (none are really mine, just add them, as extra if you want):

Cars
Tekken 4
Tekken TAG Tournament
Soul Caliber II
WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009

If anyone could give a rough estimate, I'd love to hear it. I know a place down the road that gives a lot more trade-in compared to Gamestop or others. Don't take it too high though.

Go to GameStop.com and look under pre-owned. Look at what price they are selling for and subtract about 60% and that should give you a rough idea. Some games will be more, some will be less. It's just a rough estimate though, remember that.

Trading in 2 games will give you an additional 10%, 4 will net you 20% and 6 will net you 40%, if you trade in all those you'll get some pretty decent bonus credit.

Well I don't trust Gamestop, I mean like I said I have a nice local game place that gives a very fair amount both ways, I just need to know with the poularity of those and the likelihood, what I could get, I need a rough example, really.

It'll still give you a rough idea of what you'd get by selling it to a store. I have to imagine the market is similar no matter where you go. They probably won't take Madden 2007 though as it's way out of date and they won't be able to sell it.

Yeah true, but still, I remember that I got like 25 dollars for maybe 3 or 4 games. A lot more than you'd expect I'd think. And the game's weren't that great.

EDIT: the guy said I'd get $25 bucks for the games, minus Madden and Motorstorm. My drive to get GT5 is killing me.

I don't know if anyone has discovered this, but you can charge your controllers through your Computer. If you have a laptop, this might be nice so you don't have to move close to the TV while your controller is charging. For me, my PC is closer to me than my PS3, so it gives me a little extra room.

I have some news:

Took a few hours of fumbling about with thermal paste and a heat gun, but my PS3 is functional once again. I will have only missed one full day to play GT5.

I am amazed at the amount of thermal paste I found. It looked more like they had caulked the friggin' thing. Oh well, I had bought my Arctic Silver 5 with their cleaning solution kit and it took it all off. It was only an extra five bucks to get the cleaning solution too, so I decided to use it over plain alcohol or something.

See you guys on the track.

I have four controllers (two Sixaxi, two DS3) so when one dies I just switch and plug the dead one into the PS3. Primarily I am just switching between the two DS3s and only have to bust out a Sixaxis when my wife is playing something with me, and only then if one dies in that time frame.

Hey guys, will a USA PSN network Card work in Mexico? I wanna send a gift to my GF's brother who lives there. I think he mentioned that Mexico uses USA PSN but i am not sure.

With GT5 a-coming, I'm finding the 100 friends on your a list a bit limiting. Does PlayStation Plus extend that? Can't find anything which says so, but hopefully someone will know.

Apparently no one does :indiff:

I'd wondered this myself but I wouldn't pay for it even if it did extend the limit.

I'm having a few problems with the PS3 browser, I wonder if anyone could help.

I can't watch Channel 40D on its website or even on Youtube, It just freezes on the first advertisement and never plays any video. Youtube XL is useless because for some reason it doesn't have any of the normal youtube content. So how are people watching 40D right now?

Also with BBC iPlayer is there any way of getting rid of the elapsed timer at the bottom left of the screen? Its always there even when in full screen.

Thanks

Robin.
