PS3 General Discussion

Are games you download from the PS store larger in size when they are not yet installed (in a bubble icon) than when they have been installed? Because I think I've noticed this happen a few times, what's the reason?

Also is there any way to put downloaded PSP games somewhere other than a PSP? I have a few sitting on my PS3 and don't have a PSP/Vita at the moment.

Thanks

There is probably some form of built-in installer, security verification data, and God knows what else. How big of a difference are you thinking? There could also be trophy data and save file info that would be contained in those objects and not show up as part of the game data file size.

Not officially. It verifies your account data when moving it to a PSP. Now, if you have a PSP with a removable memory card and a reader for that card type you can go on to a PC and copy over all files on your memory card. This is how I back up data from my PSP.

I am sure some jail break stuff exists to do that, but Sony has a desire to protect their licenses.

That said, once the game is downloaded it is in your download list. The only exception is if you got it free as a PS+ member and cancel your PS+ membership, but then it wouldn't be playable after that point anyway. But if it is paid for or as long as you have a PS+ membership it will be in your download list, and the PS Store on the PSP will only show PSP titles in your download list, do it won't be nearly as large a list as your PS3 download list.

Thank you for the replies guys 👍

I think it gives you a few hundred MB back when you install something that's a few GB. Usually (like with computers) you would expect something 'packed' to be smaller than 'unpacked' but it seems to be the other way round on PS3.

As for the PSP games I just want to put them somewhere other than my PS3 without having to use a PSP to do it. Oh well I guess that's not do able. If only Sony would allow backing up of DL'd games and game install data it would make life much easier.

Robin.

If your hard drive ever fills up you will find that you must have more space free than the actual download file. It could just be a space holder to reserve resources so that the installation is possible. The PSP actually requires twice the space available in order to download and install an item.

Blame it on pirates or over-zealous DRM schemes. But I do believe the thought process was that people wouldn't be downloading games for a system they don't own.

I am glad to see that they already have Bluetooth so controller! I hope this will mean that other Bluetooth device compatibility! But very good specifications, which should give the 360 a good challenge, as long as the software challenges.

YLOD symtoms...but still turns on after 2 or 3 tries of turning it on! This symptoms came out on the last update coz the update did not finish dowloading... but the ps3 installed ot anyway by itself! Did someone experieced this? Downloasing update froze and ps3 installed it anyway?

My fatty is still running great and smooth. I have been treating it good and do cleanings, the self fan cleaning, and restore file system every other month. Seems to have helped it. I hate the look and hardware in the slim and do not want one.

Only thing I have really changed in it was upgraded to a new HDD.

I had my 1st gen slim PS3 shut down randomly or at certain point in various games the past 6 months, I thought it was the HDD, replaced with a new 500GB one, still happening, then I thought it might be the OS, updated to the latest one, it gets worse, needs to remove the HDD when cold boot, wait for 5 minutes or so with the no OS found screen, turn off then insert HDD, turn on fine. If I turn on the PS3 cold, it will shut down within seconds, 10 or more restart then it will turn on fine :(. Last week, after I turn it off for 24 hours, it won't turn on anymore, shut down right after I press the power button.

I decided to tear it down, and voila, I found the culprit : Drying thermal paste, I replaced it close to 2 years ago after the warranty expired with a good brand, apparently the good brand failed to meet my expectation.

Here are some pics of it:

Removed IHS ( Integrated Heat Spreader ) on the RSX Chip -dried up paste- I am stunned, the PS3 could play GT5 the day before with this condition  - I ran my PS3 with the top cover off, the fan always in low speed - the heat was trapped inside the cooling vent beneath the fan - the temperature sensor must have not read the real measurement.

The giant heat sink + fan assembly and IHS plate from the RSX chip, as you can see the paste on the IHS plate is in a sorry state of dryness :scared:

I am getting a better thermal paste and hoping no damage has been done as the PS3 internal system prevented me to turn it on, it only allowed the fan to run and shut down in less than a second after I press the power button :ill:

Ok thanks bro! Im gonna have check then!

Guys I need some opinions. I have a PS3 Slim 120GB and I never cleaned the dust from inside (I looked from the buttom holes and I see lots of dust) only from outside, my question is: is it safe to use any vacuum cleaner to clean it?

If you set the vacuum cleaner to a low setting and use a small attachment head it should be fine to just run it along the vents to get rid of the dust. Keep the PS3 plugged in but not on when doing it to keep it earthed from any static.

You could open the case if you wanted to give it a proper clean but if you don't feel confident or still have warranty then don't bother.

My vacuum cleaner doesn't have a low setting, all I have to do is plug it in and that's it but I have that head attachment that you are saying. Just tell me why do you think that leaving me PS3 plugged in but not on would be better, wouldn't that destroy some parts inside?

If the vacuuming causes some static charge to build up it will be grounded out through the power cord instead of discharging in the electronics.

Well my 2006 Fatty 60Gb PS3 finally died on me. :( R.I.P November 17, 2006 - April 5, 2013

What should I do with it at this point?

Well, there are ways (of various technical levels) to get the thing going again for at least a few hours, so while the system might be gone you should be able to recover the data still. Just Google "YLoD fix" and you'll find a couple that you can do without even opening up the system.

Best of luck. I've been there (not a YLoD, but the GPU failing; plus the hard drive corrupting once and losing all of the data), and I know it's not fun worrying about it.

I know it's not my Hard drive failing since I just recently bought an SSD for it. I seriously hope the GPU didn't fail on me. I'll be more than happy to replace the blu-ray drive and the Power supply, and I am more than happy if the thermal paste fixes the problem.

One question, since I build PC's pretty regularly, on applying a thermal paste, do I only put a rice grain amount of thermal paste on it or more? I don't see much about how much you can put on it.

I've replaced the thermal paste on mine, and I just did the rice method. No need to do the spreading thing, because the heatsink screws into the motherboard and spreads it itself.

I am sorry to say, though, that a YLoD is extremely unlikely to be a PSU or BD drive error (and a hard drive failure would at least bring up a menu telling you that it failed). The PS3 should run completely fine after the Blu Ray drive fails (it just won't be able to read any discs), and generally if the PSU fails the system will just refuse to turn on at all rather than Yellow Light. It's probably something on the motherboard that broke (though not necessarily the GPU).

Well that greatly narrows it down for me, thank you for the information. I will Open her up and try to change the thermal paste and reflow it. Hope it works.
