Rain & Snow in Gran Turismo 5 - [UPDATED] finally, officially confirmed!!!!!

2) race time. Picking your start time of arace, I would love to start a time trial session at dawn and watch as the light get higher, also tie this into time of the year.

That's one thing i liked about GTR the ability to do that, and select accelerated time cycles, so in 30 minutes you could drive through the night.

Which I know GT has, it showed us a 2 minute cycle, which is amazing, and very intensive so not out of the question to have a broad range of control for the cycles.

And im all for weather and day cycles, but next thing people are going to want seasonal progressions!

Seasons would be great! 👍

No one goes out of their way to drive/race in the rain in real life if they can help it, but in a game, some people want to do so.... :)

There are a lot of drivers out there who are perfectly comfortable in the rain - in some cases, they can finish better. I remember seeing a BTCC race at Donington Park where Nigel Mansell was driving a Ford Mondeo as a "guest" driver. He was doing OK, finishing in the middle of the field in the first two races; in the third race, it rained. Heavily.

He literally drove around everybody and built up a considerable lead before the rain subsided, and he ended up finishing third or fourth. Mansell is not what you'd call a bad driver, but he wasn't exactly used to the tyres and the car. Something about the lower grip meant he could out-drive every other bugger on the circuit! Quite astonishing to witness.

I also remember a time I went karting, and it pissed it down. It was great! Everybody was drifting in tandem, following each other and trying to out-do each other. I got soaked from aquaplaning down the back-straight, but I didn't care - nobody did :D

Still, I'd probably not have expressly wished it had rained. That said, I know now that if it does rain, it's not a lost cause ;)

Iam glad rain is in the game. Driving in weather is a much needed thing in sim racers IMO. Iam done seeing all sunny skies. I want to see Nurburg in rain at night. Now that is a amazing thing.

Is this the race you were talking about? I had to look it up and watch some awesome rain racing.

Awesome racing, and a perfect advert for how good GT5 could be with dynamic weather and racing online. We can only hope....!

P.S. I wish the main commentator for this would replace Jonathan Legard for BBC's F1 TV coverage, Legard doesn't really know what he's talking about in terms of racing and always cuts off Martin Brundle, who DOES know what he's talking about. Sorry to digress! :P

I am no fan of Legard (👎) either-he talks way too much during the race-I usually get fed up and watch Speed's coverage and commentators when available:)

Not too many want snow; come on its fun in the snow! :sly::)

man, would i love to see weather. anyone seen the footage of this yet? i'm keeping my eye out for it because i'm sure it will show someday.

I would love to see changeable weather, particularly in endurance races. If rain is to be included, the appropriate tyre physics should be modelled accordingly.

Firstly, racing intermediate tyres and full wet tyres need to be modelled, I don't believe we've seen them yet, but I could be wrong. In GT4 you could run the wet track in Slick tyres, a track with a significant amount of standing water. This should be much harder than it was in GT4, a wet track with standing water should be incredibly difficult in fully slick tyres, to the point of being impossible. Making the correct tyre choice should be of vital importance in a race of changing weather.

I agree completely, also i do believe there is a screenshot somewhere of wet tyres being an option, it was translated from German i believe ( i could be wrong ) but i do think that we will see weather changes in endurance races and the ability to select the different tyres :)

There was a shot of the tyre choices from GamesCom, with the full complement of sports down to slicks and at the very bottom a single "Regenreifen" option.

Not really a lot to be lost in translation, there. ;)

cool, can't wait to see more. i wonder if during the rain the windshield wipers actually work in first person view???

Q: Why should Gran Turismo 5 have rain and snow?

A: It happens in real life.

you just explained everything

but id like to see other things :

How about the damage physics

like the Formula 1

if you crash badly on a tire or wing on front or back then it should be taken off and you can go to the pit stop to replace it but obviously for a longer stop.
And the damage on Formula 1 car should decrease the aerodynamic setup or again if the front wing is taken off then the whole front aerodynamic is automatically set to 0 or if the back wing comes off then the back aerodynamic is set to 0

Because look http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ba5SCNrVjxw
couldn't find any video with better quality on when Vettel hit Button on Belgium GP then Vettel went straight for pits to replace his front wing but button was hit to hard on where the radiator was so he was out

And look schumacher on 3 wheels after crashing on coulthard
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeAuQ2Xem4Q
I saw a lot more videos in youtube on F1 cars still racing with 3 wheels after crashing hard.

Also there should be weather physics for GT5 like raining hard / soft or just the roads wet or oily?? maybe some sand on the road to if its YAS abu dhabi circuit and some snow if its montreal circuit

Ive seen the cars in GT5 get damaged but only the bumpers and the outside gets damaged and it doesn't even come off on a hard crash or hit...

I don't know what to expect in terms of weather. I mean Kaz has said he'd like to see the spray glisten in the sunlight but is that actually possible on PS3 with everything else going on?

In fact I'm finding it hard to imagine that PD have managed to get a bright and sunny day to change to overcast*, then to start raining increasing the wetness of the tarmac, have the spray glisten in the sunlight and watch as the tarmac dries up like in F1 2010.

*he has already confirmed the skybox moves and evolves, hasn't he?

All that while having 16 premium cars on track with procedural damage and a day/night transition...yet IIRC dynamic weather has been confirmed. I just don't get how it's going to happen

What are people actually expecting to see with regards to weather? And how?

Go watch any Belgium GP races at Spa-Francorchamps. The weather is unpredictable. The track is officially added in gt5, so why dont they add the mad weather?

I must say I didn't know about the wet tyres reference that's officially been seen in the demo. Good stuff! Of course we've had a wet track before in a GT game, but frankly.. I think considering how long this game has been in development, and how far along the game has been for some time now (GT5 Prologue being out for what 2 years now, already that game was a good mid-point base for GT5), along with the day/night cycle, which I honestly was not expecting to be a reality, I think we can be hopeful that a pretty sweet rain/weather system could actually be in this game.

Kaz Yamauchi is dedicated to recreating the real driving experience, and from my own viewpoint of the physics of the GT Demo and what we hear from people who've played the latests builds it's that the physics are damn good, he's got that part sorted, but of course the main area that affects driving is when the wheels come into contact with the road, it's all about tires and tire wear and the conditions of the track and I'm sure he really wants to bring that into the GT experience.

I for one am hopeful. It might not be every track, for instance Daytona rain is unlikely in real life to begin with, but where appropriate I'm really hoping for rain, and for a realistic implementation, along with the day and night cycle, and we're almost there at driving nirvana. I cannot wait (finally pre-ordered my Collectors Edition from Amazon UK earlier tonight in anticipation, going to be booking that day, maybe the next off work :P)

Spa isn't officially added, though.

Unless something was said in recent times besides that screenshot which shows them researching Spa.

Nobody ever, ever, gave a confirmation

Edit: I also like the fact that this thread never seems to die off, we all just keep coming back, writing more stuff... :)

Maybe it's just a wet surface, like we've seen in GT4.

Even with simple snow/rain effect such as this and even lightly wet surface I would be happy if it all changes in game while you race.

Yep. Seems do-able to me. Trouble is, it's the physical effects (grip) that are hardest to get right. That's probably why we've not seen variable weather yet, despite already having the full gamut of fixed weather (less precipitation) in GT4.

A game for good weather is SBK 2010, I know its not a car game but the weather is amazing all be it not dynamic but the way the line drys out and pudles form is stunning.

WOW.

I must say that I am extremely impressed with the weather system Polyphony Digital has given us. It is the most photo-realistic and true-to-life rain and snow I have seen yet in a racing sim.

I wonder if all the tracks in Gran Turismo 5 will feature the new weather system? Maybe not dynamically like during the Endurance Races - but randomly generated weather beginning at the start of a normal race and lasting through the entire race [3-5 lap races]. That would be more than acceptable to me! 👍👍👍👍👍

Congratulations to Kazunori Yamauchi and his very talented team at Polyphony Digital for giving us yet again, nothing but the very best.

I have to laugh at the people asking for "even simple rain drops and snowflakes would make me happy". Then we get this, with dynamic, advanced particle and water physics.

I think this topic should be locked then. :indiff:

Why?

Wouldn't this be considered THE topic thread to discuss the new weather system - being as it's the only one? :dunce:

LOL!

I knew if PD included weather they would have to do it better than anyone else has done before - and they did.

I wonder if puddles will feature on tracks while it rains and how the water physics will reflect the on-screen graphics while driving through them? :sly:

The thread is very much relative now, Still left with some questions

- Will every track have weather affects
- Will snow only be on rally courses
- Will there be standing water
- How will standard cars be affected, will there wipers work
:)
