Rate the Alfa Romeo 166 2.0 TS ...
Dammit, I wanted to rate the S2000! Well, that car is on my website, anyways. I liked it a lot.
Anyways, the game features several 156 and 166 series Alfas, with the 2.0 engine being the bottom-line 4-cylinder. Despite this, it is a rather pricey car for not much performance at 40,850 credits. It is also a sedan, and though it seems heavy, its problem is really lack of power. Once you've got a turbo installed (there are 3 to choose from) you're on your way. If you want to get it lighter, you might be disappointed! Stage 3 weight redux takes a total of 346 lbs. off, and the car can't be race-modified.
The engine has that famous Alfa snarl and it's got a bit of low-end torque, but it seriously struggles over 6,500 rpms. In my track test, I couldn't even get it above 7,000 in 5th gear, and it topped off at 138 mph.
Despite this, I took this car to several races. At the B-license GT National race @ Trail Mountain, I raced it with all stock parts except for the permanent engine mods and a sports muffler (165 hp). There were 3 annoying Rover Minis, and I managed to squeak my heavy car around them without any slamming. By the time I was starting lap 2, I passed all of them and eventually won the race. Just goes to show that despite the weight, this one can own!
At the A-license GT race @ Rome, I used sports tires and suspension, sports gearbox, stage 1 turbo with sports exhaust (215 hp@6,600 rpm) and gave my 166 stage 1 weight reduction (2,974 lbs.), racing brakes but no controller and no other mods. Here, I was really expecting a lot of understeer, but was pretty surprised. Of course, I know this track well, but still, the handling was a lot better than expected. The only time you're really gonna have a prob is if you mess your cornering line or brake too late. No surprises here.
Finally at the GT Regional race @ Grand Valley, I had stage 2 weight reduction, soft slicks, semi-racing suspension, full stage 3 turbo power (356 hp@6,600 rpm), twin clutch with sports flywheel, and the brake controller set at 11 & 19. Finally, the car's handling was what I expected! Lots of body roll, braking distances needed to be longer, lots more understeer...but it's still got great out-of-corner response and hugs the turns. I won the race while the more agile TVR Cerbera 4.2 with its higher top speed clambered behind me in half of lap 2 and most of 3.
