This is another car from my youth as my father owned a Chrysler dealership at the time. After Lee Iacocca took over at Chrysler he thought they needed a flagship vehicle to assure the public that Chrysler had a future. Well it didn't exactly turn out that way. This was a more upscale version of the 2 door Chrysler Cordoba and Dodge Mirada.
My dad loved and I mean LOVED this car. He had to have one as soon as they were announced. I was 15 at the time so I had my learner permit and got to drive it some. He let me drive it back from Huntsville, AL where I had played high school basketball that night to our home about an hour away. His had an 8 track stereo system. I remember the digital dash, the crystal hood ornament, the "fake" crystal in the end of the ignition key, almost everything about this car.
This was Chrysler's first attempt at a throttle body fuel injection system and wow did it suck. They had so many problems with it that 1982 and 1983 models were fitted with carburetors instead and 1981 models were retrofitted to carburetors under warranty.
Lee's pal Frank Sinatra even loaned his name to a Frank Sinatra special edition that lasted the first two years but was dropped for the final 1983 year.
The car was overpriced and it under delivered. But as I said my dad loved it and found one in the late 80's that he kept until he passed away in 1999.
