a) Would (wood)screw kit like this work OK for synthetic stock?
Probably not, I don't know the gun but pretty much all synthetic stocks are hollow inside so such a screw set wouldn't work. (If they weren't hollow they would be HEAVY)

b) I'm sort of interested in rattle canning the stock to different color. Is it as simple as just removing the stock, spray, then coat it with something?
Use Duracoat, but only with a compressor and an airbrush pistol. The shake'n spray kit sucks. Spray can might work, depending on the quality. Check this out:

That's what I was afraid of. I may be able to rig something up with them, but if I installed those screws as intended, I didn't think it would hold for very long. I'll check out the stock next time I have it off, see how much meat it has, if much at all.

I wasn't even going to bother with any proper kits. Just basic spray cans from hardware store, go for total white trash finish, since it's like $100 rifle. On second thought, if I make it look too trashy looking, I'd be embarrassed to take it to the range, and can't have that.

It's currently gray, and I don't even know what color I'd want to paint it(maybe tan), but I don't think I'd do camo. I don't know.

Thanks very much for input Michael. 👍

If the stock has some meat where you want to install those screws you could drill a hole, fill that part with epoxy and glue the screws in place. Though I have no idea how well the epoxy would hold those screws in place.

There's an idea. 👍

I used to look for aftermarket stocks that came with sling attachments, but the cost is bit high, considering it's a rifle I want to enjoy on the cheap. Plus, they have plenty of stocks available for Ruger 10/22, but there are very, very little to choose from when it comes to Remington 597. I don't want to turn it into some awkward looking special-tactical rifle either(most popular aftermarket stock for 597).

I've got a 597 laying around somewhere. I think its fiberglass but don't quote me on that.

Funny, the 597 is the only gun I know that does not come with any kind of sling swivels studs or pre-drilled installment holes for swivels studs. You can't even install a bipod!

Well, you could simply go savage on the stock and cut two slots into it, through both sides, and install a Mosin Nagant sling. It would definitely work but would it look halfway decent?
I think it would look like the worst illiterate caveman sling installation ever.

Or just drill two holes and run a steel cable through the stock.

Don't remind me. ALL my friends has 10/22, and they still give me crap about my .22 rifle. What sucks is that one of those 10/22 guys was with me when I bought the 🤬 gun, and he didn't talk me out of it!

It was my first gun, I knew nothing about guns. To top it off, my early production 597 came with defective magazines, which made my first firearm ownership somewhat sour. Remington still sucks in my book for that. :grumpy:

I have this one. I was hoping it said something about the stock but it doesn't.

Mine is a bolt action but its wood colored and old lol

I don't think that's a 597. 597 is a semi-auto .22LR rifle, comes with a 10-round clip magazine.

Oops I was thinking of my other .22, my bad. My 597 is a (confirmed, I just looked) wooden semi auto with a 5 round insert able clip/magazine thingy. The clip is small, looks kind of like a box.

Maybe the 5 rounds was a NY thing. I honestly don't remember how much my original magazine held, but it just jammed everything anyway.

Factory mag looks like this. I have one of those(updated one), plus three banana style one, which I think holds 30.

My ruger 10/22 is the same with the 5 round thing. I do have a banana for the 597 but its 11 rounds like one of my tube fed semi autos.

That's terrible. I have a tri-mag each Mag holding ten, so a total of thirty in that clip, then I have three bx-25 Ruger magazines that hold 25 a piece is there regulation on magazine size where you are?

Yes in New York they just passed a law called the safe act that limits you to 7 rounds including 1 in the chamber. The entire state is in an uproar trying to overturn it. Every magazine you have over the limit after 1 year is a felony for each one. So I'd have about 350 felonies. For doing nothing. Because we have a lot of military surplus that was sold off to the public.

DOODS. I need to get me a Negev.

If IWI can bring out a TAR-21 with the X95 style mag release, that would be perfect. Maybe make an extra long one in .308 while they're at it. The new Galil Ace looks pretty cool too, but man alive does that thing squirm. The piston in that thing must throw back as much torque as a Toyota.

I want a TAR-21. That range portion of the video made me jealous, all that brass.

I am thinking of buying a .22LR rifle. I would guess Ruger 10/22 is the choice to buy?

I'll be honest with you. I've never had another .22, but my 10/22 has held up pretty well. It's had it's jams, but it's not crazy about it. I also enjoyed doing my stock and getting it sanded to where it fit my hands better.

And, for everyone wanting to see my work with my stock, it seems like it won't let me upload the pics. Tells me invalid file every time. :/

Like I said, that's terrible. Come down here to Louisiana and I'll show you what it's like to open carry! Haha. But for real, the US is in a huge uproar over guns and race right now. Lol.

One more thing, you picked a terrible time to get a .22 because the ammo is impossible to find.
Yup. At least $12 a box if not more and that's for only 50 rounds.

I have one. Absolutely fantastic gun. It jams on occasion but for its age that's expected. 5 round magazine. It has taken a fair amount of abuse.

I refuse to buy .22lr at over 0.10 to 0.12 cents a round. Over that is a rip off. I still find 325 packs here in Louisiana for $20.00 or so aafter tax.

And it makes me sad for you slashfan. Not being able tto legally possess large capacity magazines. But, what you have to do is go through the loopholes. Buy hundreds of five Rounders and learn to reload stupid fast. Lol.

Sold a milsurp rifle to one of my relatives.
Strangely, I enjoy briefing someone on a new gun - its technical specifications, how to take it apart, how to operate it properly, the ammo specs and its history- more than I should. Must have been a firearms instructor or drill sergeant in my former life.

Anyway, I have the same rifle and I cant wait to have a small family rifle duel next time on the range. With my super accurate handloads I will crush his pathetic attempts to outshoot me!
Oh wait, its supposed to be a fun and relaxed sort of ''duel''.... :scared:

I want the Galil in .308, can't beat an ultra reliable AK-ish rifle in a powerful caliber.
They are good looking rifles. One of the guys who played Call of Duty with our [GTP] clan had one of those, and I had never even heard of them before that. He also had AR-10 way before me, and at the time, I actually questioned(more like accused) him "why would you need a AR in that caliber?". Duh. :ouch:

Brett: You probably remember him. I don't want to mention his name on here, but he was also from Oklahoma, and although he played MW2 all the time with us, he's not a gtplanet member.

597 is a good rifle(now), and mine has been pretty rock solid since purchasing the new mags, but yeah, if you want parts & accessory availability & selections, also people not laughing at you, stuff like that, yes, I would recommend the 10/22. If 10/22 stock comes with a way to attach a sling, then it's a no-brainer.

I still can't believe how Remington put a defective rifle(magazine, but affects the whole thing) on the market, when you are going up against such a proven, established rifle like the 10/22. Instead of bringing your A-game, they bring their big "F" to challenge the Champ. Yes, I'm still sore. :grumpy:

As I was reading that, I was thinking who'd be a better firearm salesman than Michael! You are in the wrong business man!

Just think about the discount you would be entitled to, increased access to hard-to-find parts, guns, etc. Just write up a purchase order, get anything you want! :sly:

Something tells me that they already half-expect your inner-competitiveness.

I picked up 200 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags today at lunch. However, that is the first time I have seen some .22LR in stock in quite some time.

Possibly. I have no way to check my friend's list though. My PS3 has been dead for quite some time now.

I need couple of advice, if anybody has opinion:

My Remington 597 rimfire rifle has synthetic stock with no holes or swivels for slings.

a) Would (wood)screw kit like this work OK for synthetic stock?

Yes and No. By simply screwing it in from the under belly portion of the stock, it would not hold up very long. It would eventually work itself loose. Now, if you were to dis-assemble the gun, install a nutsert from the inside portion of the stock, maybe even applying a bit of JBWeld around the nutsert, it would be damn near pull-out proof. Keep in mind, do this in a "meaty" portion of the stock. I've done this trick to a Mosin Nagant with an Archangel stock. It worked out fantastic.

I am thinking of buying a .22LR rifle. I would guess Ruger 10/22 is the choice to buy?

Nice plinking gun. Are you looking at the Tactical or the Carbine ? Or the Target type ?

One more thing, you picked a terrible time to get a .22 because the ammo is impossible to find.

Not here in Ohio. 22LR is everywhere now. The only problem is shopping around to see who is cutting the deals on this stuff. It's still a bit on the pricey side of things. Text messages are flying amongst friends .... so and so has it for $$$ .... this guy has it for $$$. Just depends. Supply, well this guy still has his "no limit" sales in tact. He's a little on the higher side, but he's got plenty of it and will sell as much of it as you want .... how deep are your pockets ? He'll still sell it to you.
