"Watch this" accompanied with continuous eye contact would be bad ass.

I didn't realize muzzle break contributed that much in decibels. Good to know!

I have a huge arse brake on my .300 Remington ultra magnum, and its so loud my ears ring when I'm using only earmuffs without having a pair of earplugs in my ears to double up the protection.
I tell you, I love shooting small break action shotguns with hot slugs from the bench for fun, but pushing 240's at 2800+ is no joke in the recoil department. It will not kill me but it has a negative effect on my accuracy even though I'm an experienced shooter who is not recoil shy. Its just physics.

I always tell those who shoot next to me that I'm going to shoot a really a loud gun and I suggest using double ear protection. Thats all I can do and IMO everybody should use double ear protection anyway.

Yes I think that a hard recoiling gun is a perfectly valid exception. I also know some people with joint problems who need a brake and large butt pad. I was more referring to the semi-auto .223 crowd.

I really should sell my snowboard or something and get a rifle, guns are much cooler than a plank of wood with straps attached.

One of us. One of us.

LMAO.

@ Zenith

I also know a few people who have muzzle brakes installed on their very soft recoiling .223's and 6.5's. Why? With the brakes the guns have almost zero recoil so they can spot their own shots at long ranges. Thats very useful when shooting at ranges beyond 500 yds without a spotter.

Yeah watching the bullet arc to the target is always cool. The people I was referring to in my post are a pretty specific crowd. There are plenty of legit uses of muzzle brakes.

Savage, best price-performance ratio under the sun, their out of the box accuracy never fails to impress me and .270 is a very nice caliber. 👍
What scope is that?

And whats the story with this creepy cat-statue?

The Scope is a Nikko Stirling Nighteater with an LRX reticle.

We are cat people, so my mom has a few cat statues and other knick knacks. lol

I'm still looking for Mini Mags. :D They used to be on the store shelves all the time, but it's almost like the demand for those CCI HVs went up simultaneously with the .22LR shortage. I think I've yet to see CCI Mini Mags & brick of Remington in stores this year.

Mini Mag HV are making their presence known more and more around here. Still just a little on the scarce side, but they are not hiding as they once were. Just this past weekend I was at a shop and seen them for ..... get this .... $35 / per box of 50 !!! Are you 🤬 nuts ? $35 for Mini Mags ? The thing is, people were buying them. I've seen them as low as $22, still a little steep, but definitely more do-able.

My Savage 111 in .270

Dude ..... Noice piece of artillery. 👍

My kid just picked up a Black Synthetic Savage 7mm Rem Mag at a good cost this past weekend. Along with it came a Caldwell lead sled shooting stand. Both items, $350, and the rifle is brand spanking new, never been fired . Hew comes waltzing through the door on Sunday late afternoon, "hey Mom - Dad ... look what I bought".

I'll get a pic and throw it up here tomorrow ... if I remember. :boggled: Pretty cool looking piece he acquired.

$22!? How much were they before the shortage?

(IIRC) Before all of the fertilizer hit the ventilator, I seem to recall this stuff being under $10 p/box. 1500 round boxes were like around $85'ish ($5.50 p/hundred).

Then 🤬 happened. We'll never see these prices again ..... ever.

I have seen $7.50 per 100 rounds in the last few months. All of the Mini Mags that I have bought have been at that price. Academy's prices have been fairly consistent. Their stock is not always there, but they have not gouged on prices.

Oh, we are getting gouged on this stuff, hard. As mentioned, CCI Mini Mag HV are coming back around here slowly, but at the inflated $$.$$. Standard .22LR is all over the place. $7.50 is a hell of a bargain compared to the $22 that's around here. I've not seen it personally, but a buddy of mine who lives in Southern Ohio says he found some HV @ $12 p/box. Still, that's $5 more than you are paying . Sheeeeez, our SV ammo is the same price as your HV ammo, we're getting boned on .22 here. Gotta love market areas .....

Stock up Brett, before the next round of crap happens. :nervous:

The problem is the stock is not there. I have not actively been looking for the last month, but when I was looking, .22LR was always quick to disappear. However, I have done a pretty good job of stocking up on 9mm. I also have a small stack of 5.56x45mm, even though I do not have a firearm that fires it.

It seems to be availability versus price for most of us. Brett still seem to get the best deals though.

I shop just Walmart & local sporting goods chain, and prices hasn't seen that much rise..... with the exception of the Winchester .45ACP Value Pack(100rds). $30 to $42. That one really hurts. :( But like I said, certain calibers are still scarce. .308 price & availabiltiy are better than ever though!

.45ACP is something I've got to get going on. Federal Law Enforcement 230 grain is $25'ish around here. Federal 185 grain hollow points are pushing $30 here. Blazer full metal 230 grain is under $20, like $18 and some change. Hornaday 220 grain is just over $20 and some change. I need to stock up on this stuff, I've got a Sig 1911 .45ACP showing up this weekend.

EDIT ...
Holy ammo Batman ..... just seen that I hit 5K posts.

Ah, that's right, forgot about that! :D Those prices sound reasonable, I'd definitely stock up if I were you. I don't see them getting cheaper, but I think they are sure to go up from this point on.

Yeah, I was browsing some ammo prices while looking for another batch of 5.56. Prices are still very elevated. I think I'm gunna spend my money on other hobbies for the time being.

Luckily I've got some handloads from a friend and some Black Hills 77 gr Open Tip Match ammo to test the accuracy of my gun. All I need is some good glass or perhaps a more keen eye. Maybe a magnifier would be in order for the EoTech. 3X isn't ideal but it sure does sound good to be able to pop that on and off the rifle for different ranges.

I have started spending money on another hobby. Building a new PC. It has not been a cheap hobby so far and will only get more expensive once I buy a video card.

Really? I see 7.62x54 from time to time, and I was under the impression that it wasn't bad....... Then again, I can't even remember exactly how much I saw them for. :dopey:

How about Tula? I think their steel shells are pretty cheap, aren't they?

Guys, I'll say it again, you should start rolling your own! :P
Amount of shooting I do, that would end up costing me more...... and possibly a hand(hopefully just one). :P

7.62x54R Mosin is really cheap to shoot. PPU Prvi Partizan 182 gr. is only like $14 p/box of 20. That's cheap shooting for a high power round. Obviously you can get into some higher end ammo on these Mosins ... $30 - $50 stuff, but the PPU works just fine.

Tula - Bear - Wolf all that metal jacket stuff is really cheap. $5.99 p/box of 20 .... deal ! Hollow point 7.62x39 is like $7.99 p/box of 20 ... still cheap. You just have to be aware of the lacquer coated stuff, this can create problems if your gun is not cleaned out properly after usage.

Surplus ammo is also really dirt cheap. I bought 500 rounds of 7.62x54R for a mere $50. Just remember to clean your gun afterwards. Really, really, really clean your gun, surplus is fun but dirty stuff to shoot. BTW - I only use surplus in my Mosins.

As mentioned yesterday, my kid brought home a new toy for himself. A Weather Warrior Savage 7mm Rem Mag. with stand.

I used to shot tons of surplus out of my Mosins, I remember paying $20 or so for 330 rounds in those metal spam cans. You are right about it being dirty ammo its almost as bad as shooting blanks out of a AR LOL.

But Glad to hear surplus is back down to $50 I was seeing it @ $89 last time I checked during the whole "OMG congress is going to ban guns" phase.

I do remember reading about the lacquer coated stuff, though newer steel cases(like Tula) are supposedly clear of that stuff.

I really like the new rifle. Looks really cool, but extra points for weather resistance! 👍

Great pics, and thanks for the background on the K98. Very historical & interesting stuff. 👍 I have a Arisaka rifle that was given to me from my coworker, and I read online that it was referred to as the "last ditch" model. Like your K98, they were just pumping them out of the factories as fast as they could, but Arisaka is way more crude, and it's missing some details that were present on the earlier production rifles.

I picked up a couple of Mausers back in July, but wasn't posting much on here over the summer so I didn't get around to taking any pics until recently. My local FFL had them sitting on one of his racks for a while. The K98 had a tag for $350 and the 1891 was $180 but he wanted to get them out of there so I took them both for a total of $350. Figured you all would like these though. Lots of pics of all the different markings on the rifles.

More K98 pics. It was a Russian capture gun so It's got mixed numbers. I've been told that it has a late war "Kriegsmodell" stock from when they needed to crank these out as fast as possible.

The 1891 Arg has matching numbers and is in beautiful condition as far as I'm concerned.

Nice stuff 👍, and a great buy on them. I'm still in the market for a nice K98 or a nice Gewehr Danzig. The ones I've seen have been in a condition not near as nice as your K98 or they have been waaaaay overpriced. I'll land one of these or both models eventually. The only Mauser I currently own is a Chilean version chambered in 7mm, it's fun, but I'd rather have that 8mm German.

Is your Arisaka a type 44 ? If so, I'm so jealous of you . A type 44 is one of those other toys on my checklist. Plain Jane Arisaka's (type 38's) are a dime a dozen, readily available anywhere. The 44's are a little more elusive ... a nice clean one that is.

Very nice rifles! You can definitely tell by the missing bayonet lug, missing cleaning rod and the minimalistic stamped barrel bands that the stock and furniture are a 45' production.
Too bad the numbers don't match, the Russians disassembled all the captured 98's, refurbished them and put them back together mixing up all the parts.
Though its still a true German 98 that went through the hell WWII was. (and that relatively unscathed)

Though the metal surfaces look very dry, give them a good oiling.👍

Its kinda hard to tell from the pic, is the stock of the late 98 a laminated wood stock? It should be, but it looks like walnut with a layer of shellac to me. Odd. AFAIK pretty much all 98 manufactures stopped using walnut stocks around 1940-41 and switched to laminated wood.
