Yeah, I edited my last post. It was probably $10 at the time. It has probably been six months or longer since I have been there. Either way, I could have paid the $10, done some shooting, left to buy more ammunition, came back, and continue shooting on the same day.

Ah, thanks Brett. 👍

Speaking of range, I heard about one that's probably 35 minutes from me that were like $18 + you gotta buy their ammo?

Sounds pretty reasonable right? Or should I look around harder?

Edit: Seven bucks? Are Whoppers still .99 cents in OKC?

Nope, but gas is $3.43. That's reason enough to leave the West Coast.

Do you guys have unleaded gas made in China or something? I've been paying about $4.09+, lately. I'm convinced that people in the West Coast don't buy that whole Hybrid car = Green argument, they just want to stick it to the oil company.

$10 sounds amazing though, Brett. And sounds like you are saying that you didn't have to buy their ammo either? All of the places I check around where I live, you pay the $18 fee(or whatever), then you are required to buy their overpriced ammo.

I should really join that range I visited before. Membership only, but the place got all sorts of range inside, including 24-hour access indoor ranges.

I've always found that buying ammo in huge bulk makes everything better. A lot of sites like cheaperthandirt often them in a sweet sealed military style container as well (great for mall ninjas and survivalists alike). I also look for rounds loaded on stripper clips for STANAG magazines. Since I'm in CA, my mags are limited to 10 rounds so one stripper clip is perfect.

It's worth noting that the Mk16 (5.56) Scar was dropped by SOCOM while the Mk17 (7.62/.308') was kept. Apparently the Mk16 just didn't offer enough over the M4 to justify the cost of rearming. The Mk17 on the other hand fills a niche role.

The one time I went, the place was not even selling ammunition. From the website, it appears that they are now selling ammunition. I would assume that bringing your own would still be fine.

I guess the M14's just too outdated at this point? If I could afford it, that would've been one of my top choices.

As far as .223 rifles go, is there anything better than AR15/M4? When you consider everything from price, accuracy, etc., I don't know of any other rifles I'd rather own, especially in terms of parts availability.

If I could do that, buy cheap ammo at Walmart, then pay the $18 for the lane, that would be so sweet. I'd probably go every other week.

Depends on what you mean with ''outdated'', it fires the popular 7.62x51, its very accurate, has good sights, good magazines, its reliable and sturdy. And if you feel like it you can turn it into a Sci-Fi gun with a quick stock change:

I'm not a fan of the M1A / M14, (FAL fan myself) but its still a damn good gun.

The M14 is still a very good platform. If you want the tacticool factor (and I know you do), then you are going to need a stock change. The U.S. Military has at least two variations in the Mk14 EBR and M39 EMR. Or you could go the route that Michael posted.

Basically everything but the stock, at least on the last three Michael posted. The bullpup stock is likely a little different story.

@ a6m5 Kimbers can always be relied upon to deliver a seriously badass look.

And yes, IMO the AR15 is the best 5.56 platform available primarily because you can build one exactly to your needs with limitless part selection. It's not a difficult system to understand and it's even easier to build. For any mission or purpose there are literally hundreds of each part that can help you achieve your goal. One could even argue that is the best all around platform currently available.

@ExigeEvan Pretty much everything that's actually important. It should turn out the same results.

The M14 is still a very good platform, especially if you're a hunter or looking for a long range shooter. A bullpup version seems like something I would appreciate.

No, not only the receiver, also the trigger assembly, trigger, trigger guard, the whole gas system + operating rod & spring, the barrel; its just a different stock.

I don't think he was asking about the gun in the pic, but I could be wrong. I think he was asking 'in general' what can be different.

God, I love assault rifles! or are these almost snipers?

Neither! A Semi-Auto rifle that is chambered in a full-size rifle cartridge that wasn't designed as a precision rifle is a so called ''battle rifle. Battle rifles have no full auto capability. If they do (There are full auto FALs* and M14's) they're LMG's or squad automatic gun. For example the FN-FAL , the CETME, and the M14 are all battle rifles, not assault rifles nor snipers.

In a nutshell: heavy powerful huge a$$ semi-auto rifles that don't f_ck around. :sly:

* Thats what a FN-FAL lmg looks like (Canadian L2A1). Note the 30 round magazine, the heavier barrel and the integral bipod.
It goes BANGBANGBANGBANGBANG! :dopey:

Ah, OK. 👍 I've heard "battle rifle" before, but now it makes sense. Sounds like my type of rifle. :D

Finally getting the G19 out to the range tomorrow.

Take some pictures if you can!

Edit:

Same picture I posted couple pages ago:

Gun guy at my work(I have many!) called it "revolver sights". Sure enough, they do remind me of GP100 I shot(.357 Mag!). While I don't mind the style of the sights at all, dark metal color does make it quite challenging to set the sights up on the target in a hurry.

I've seen these paints around. What do you guys think? One review on amazon said any paint made for painting on metal would work. I'm thinking about trying out either bright orange, or bright green paint, at least on the back of the front sight(towards me, of course). I think it should help tremendously.

Why do you need the sights to line up quickly? I thought it was a range toy?

I have never used sight paint. I can't comment. I can definitely understand a reluctance to shell out the extra cash to buy Tritium.

You never know. :sly:

But seriously, as a home defense weapon, I just realized that I don't have anything loaded now after the Glock. I have Benchmade. As for the 1911 being a toy, yes, it's initial & main reason is for fun. But if some cheap paint will make it tons more efficient at lining up the sight, not only making it easier, but also a deadlier weapon, I'm gonna do it. :D

A Google search or an expert's opinion will have to help you :P

On the subject of FAL's, battle rifles, and modernizing classics...

DSA FALs are excellent, DSA bought up all the tools and spare parts from our arms manufacturer ''Steyr Mannlicher'' which produced FN-FALs labeled ''STG-58'' until 77', then it got replaced by the STG-77, better known as the Steyr AUG. (And all the 58's were destroyed. :ouch:  :grumpy: )

The DSA receivers and most standard FAL parts are all made on Austrian Steyr machines.

DSA even produces the original STG-58

It all went really well yesterday...until I sliced my hand open on the rusty target hanger and bled all over the range. Only me.
