RKM Motorsport - Tuned Tuners - May '13

He deserves lots of tunes for what he does all the time

A lot is an understatement! Roj alone owes me like 30-40 odd tunes without including the re-reviews, with those included, it's something like 50…And RJ what was it you were saying about Noobster's CT230R? My one (RJ tuned) did a 1:35.099 on Fuji, and what did Noobster's do? 1:35.5xx :D

He deserves a hat. :P
Now where are those promised treats?

Roj said you got fish treats. :P

Nope, you're getting a hat.

Now stand still whilst I see how much abuse it can take. :D

Oh wow thanks, 60+ reviews, at least 1 a day, and this is my thanks…
Joking, but what do you mean by 'see how much abuse it can take'? It's not like I'm going to attack it with a sledgehammer…

I'm posting set ups in here instead. :D
Absolutely not. If you want to post vehicle setups, do it in your own garage, not someone else's just because you feel like you have to get the last word in, or for whatever other reason this tiff is still going on. RJ has added you to his ignore list so if your beef is with him, he won't see it anyway. Don't subject everyone else to your e-battle fallout.

At everyone else - Less (or preferably no) off topic banter would be awesome. There are a ton of posts that could rightly be deleted due to this. You'll never get to OVER 9000!!!! if we have to keep deleting posts. ;)

Right on. I believe my thoughts on it can be found the first time he mentioned the CT230R in his thread (there's a vid of it at Tsukuba) and of course it sparked a massive argument (as did everything I ever said towards him). No point trying to argue with him now, it's not worth it.

Thanks mate.

We'll try to be good, we swear.

Just Broke in the car, still not Finished the Tune. In her current state she's runs Fuji @

1:35.028 RR Tires No Assist other than - ABS - 1

&

1:39.754 SS Tires No Assist other than - ABS - 1

I'm looking to break the 1:34 Clean before publishing the Tune :D I've already done it but I went a touch too wide Turn 1 so I don't count the lap.

Next will be the Evo IX & X

Are you allergic to listening? Discuss your garage updates and tuning in your thread. Don't continue to do so in another garage's thread.

And when you do post in your garage, an edit will do, not another post to string onto the quadruple-post I'm just fixing.

Wow…it's very quiet here after the Mods have done their work…
Anyways, since I have tomorrow off (YES!!!), I guess I'll review the Celica WRC…but what would be a good match for it?

Been a quite weekend in general for the tuning forum. The mods deleting Noobs post also helps keep things much calmer, which is appreciated.

An actual tarmac racer (since that's what the Celica's been converted too.) Try a GT300 car and compare the times of the Celica before and after the setup. You won't beat the GT300 car with either setup probably (I don't know for sure since I haven't tested it) but it'll be good to see the difference in time between stock tune and RKM tune.

Well that's what I normally do anyways…getting rather boring though…I might try something different, but a race report style review has been done already so I'm out of ideas…

RS6 Avant Shootout
RKM Motorsports vs Lion's Den Performance

RS6Avant.jpg

The Audi RS6 Avant
Fresh out of the Dealer: 554 HP, 2025 kg, 514 PP, Sports Hard Tires
(one run done with each car to ensure even break-in)
Best Lap Time: 1:39.250
Thoughts: With over 500 HP, the RS6 Avant is no slouch on the straights. However, with the mass of a small elephant, the big problems show up any time the track bends. It takes about a day and a half to slow down for a corner, and by time you get there, the tires are red and smoking. Corner speed is about as bad as one would expect. It is very stable on the gas, which is a combination of a high gearbox and enough weight to firmly plant the tires into the asphalt.

Notes before hitting the track: Both tuners went with a nearly full modification on their cars, leaving them equal in both power and weight, with both shops tuning for Sports Soft tires. However, both tuners chose to leave out a piece that make the cars very different. Rotary Junkie from RKM went with the stock transmission, while Lion's Den's Dragonistic left off the ugly but effective aerodynamic parts. The tuners seem to have gone in completely different directions to make this car go fast, with vastly different setups on the LSD, as well as in toe & camber. Both of these cars were among these two tune shop's early GT5 releases.

Ikeamobile from RKM Motorsports
Final after test completed: HP: 935 Wt: 1524 PP: 623

RS 6X Predator Edition from Lion's Den Performance
Final after test completed: HP: 935 Wt: 1524 PP: 615

5 lap first impression:

Ikeamobile Best Lap Time: 1:30.886
Thoughts: The RKM model had the disadvantage of going first in my test. Usually, that doesn't have too much of an effect, but this car takes so long to decellerate for a corner, I found myself losing a lot of time trying to figure out a good brake marker on the track. The cornering is fairly solid for a vehicle this heavy, and this car has plenty of power. At first run, I would say the glaring weakness is on braking and corner entry.

RS 6X Predator Edition Best Lap Time: 1:29.888
Thoughts: Thanks to the RKM test, I had a pretty good feel for my brake markers for this car, and that helped a lot. Braking is still a major weakness, obviously, you can't tune out the effect of high speed + heavy car. This car felt a little looser on corner exits, and almost acting like a FR car rather than a AWD platform. Hard throttle would get the back tires to spin a bit and almost put the car into a drift, and 2nd gear is to be avoided in pretty much any corner.

After a few more races:

Ikeamobile Best Lap Time: 1:28.907
RS 6X Predator Edition Best Lap Time: 1:28.628

Comparison:

Braking: Both cars were fairly even on braking. They both took forever to slow down thanks to the cars weight, and both liked to slide if pushed too deep. The Ikeamobile would have the edge in that the car seemed to recover better from the slide, thanks to a little more pull from the front tires.

Speed: Again, both cars were pretty even here. 2nd gear was fairly useless for either car, given that the torque and hp would easily spin the tires. Thankfully, the power-band is pretty wide, so 3rd gear had plenty of pull coming out of the 50-60 MpH corners.

Low-speed cornering: The Ikeamobile gets the edge here over the Predator. Driving these two tunes was like driving two different cars. The 4WD action of the Ikeamobile pulled the car out of the slow turns with the minimum of slip, while the Predator like to spin the rear tires and get the back end out. Although usually controllable, time and speed were lost on the exit. Mid-corner speeds were pretty similar for both cars.

High-speed cornering: LDP gets the advantage in high-speed corners for almost the same reason it loses in low-speed corners. The RKM tune had a bit of 4WD understeer on the fast turns, and slow transitions at speed, while the Predator pushed through the high speed turns a little faster, and seemed a bit more responsive on transitions.

Overall: LDP has put together a slightly faster car, with a price. It is a bit more difficult to handle, as it feels halfway between a 4WD and RWD, and as such, is difficult to be consistent. The line between fast and dirt is a pretty fine one in this car. The RKM tune is consistant, and easier to avoid mistakes in, but a bit slower overall.

It's interesting that these tunes make the car feel completely different, but my lap times in both were so close, it's hard for me to appoint a winner. If I had to choose a car for a fast, flat course, I'd take the Predator. For a course with more elevation changes and low-speed turns, I'll stick with the more stable Ikeamobile.

Hey, racer39658, is the Celica WRC good? Because I drove it and I couldn't find much I liked about it... But the rest I'll save for its 'extended review'.

lol racer39658, I just noticed now that there's an illusion of someone in the driver's seat in the red RS6.

In the meantime, MFT's thread has continued it's silent but effective operation that's aimed to GT5 tuning section domination.. :mischievous:

Which will be successful next month-august.

Honestly MFT should be getting the same recognition we are. They are our equals but with madder skillz as far as driving goes (Greycap makes a blazing lap look slow for example).

So yeah, everyone... Click the link in Leo's sig, find good tunes that we've mostly not done.

Well that can be applied to most small tuning threads here! The two other tuning threads I use also deserve a fair amount of attention...still, I might give it a go myself after I'm done with RJ's stuff and the rm civic, m3 csl, celica and the two Eco boxes

We've been told to cut down on the off-topic spam so yeah, it's quiet. :P

Another tarmac-tuned rally car on sports hards.

Which gives me a choice of……nothing. So think of something better, actually don't, I've got something lined up already.

Um, read my review on it. Yep, I liked the car a lot, plenty of traction, smooth handling, and fairly fast for being down at 320 hp.

I think a fair match would be the '08 Cusco Dunlop Impreza. 4WD platform, little higher HP, and a tad lighter, but you can even it out with restrictors and ballast, or see if the Celica can keep up with a car with slightly better numbers.

Tuner note:
I've used tunes from several of the shops that seem to have a good reputation, although I've just reviewed cars from RKM. MFT, LDP, and Vengeance all get a thumbs up from me, and I've got a couple of cars being prepped for Praiano's tunes to try his shop out.

Just dropping in to compliment you guys on your 430 Scud tune.

I've been trying a various modified road cars to see if they'll break the magic 7 minute barrier at the 'Ring on sports hards. A lot of the more powerful stuff does it easily, and despite it's relatively low power the Scud with your tune gets pretty close - I was running it fully tuned, with sports hard tyres and your suspension, gears and LSD set up and have a best lap in a 4 lap session of 7'03, but it may get there with more laps.

The tune has a very, very nice balance, making the car relatively easy to drive even on sports tyres.

Good job 👍

After seeing what a success the Celica was, I'm thinking about doing the Suzuki SX4 WRC too in a similar style.

I will, but I just don't feel like flipping through 5 pages of the spam which make up RKM to find it…
And I'll give that a go as well, thanks for the advice. Now I just wish I could add photos!!!

You don't have to do that. There's a search thread button on the top right of this page. Click it and search for "Celica" them you'll find the review if you scroll down a bit. 👍

Lol thanks, I read that just after I've found the review…Anyways, Roj, do I need to send the CT230R to you for the gearbox tuning like RJ said a few million pages back or do I stick with the botch job I've done?
