Russian Invasion of Ukraine

I'm sure my opinion is too hopeful and optimistic to be the current majority opinion.
But, for what it's worth, the most basic objectives of the military operation are threefold: to arrive at an agreement with the government of Ukraine to cease hostilities with Donbas, provide fresh water to Crimea (with implicit recognition of the fait accompli), and to keep NATO out of Ukraine. Those basics are achieved now on the ground. Once formally agreed at the table, Russia can retreat 100% all its forces from the sovereign nation of Ukraine, with the Donbas remaining a part of Ukraine.
So Russia wants Ukraine to acknowledge the fact that it took portions of Ukraine unlawfully and offers absolutely no concessions in return for ceasing of hostilities?

Comparing Putin to Hitler is unfair.
At least Hitler made the economy better...

Putin really being cornered at the moment. This will of course result in Ukraine taking the beating for this. It's time that the West starts to think about how many civilians need to die before we intervene. Technically we're already at war.

Personally, I don't want to say hundreds of thousands of dead (or more) in Ukraine (or anywhere else). But I also think the West needs to draw a line somewhere.

No. Ukraine needn't explicitly acknowledge the taking of Crimea. And the Donbas stays. And the hostilities don't just cease, all Russian troops are immediately removed.

The main thing to keep in mind is that the alternative to a swift peace agreement is horrific, almost unthinkable.

Wut

We have a saying in NL: "Een kat in het nauw maakt rare sprongen". Which, when translated literally, means "A cornered cat makes weird jumps". Now imagine the cat has nukes and nothing to lose. :scared:

Leave some space for the cat to make a getaway. Yeah, I know, justice and all. But rather one war criminal on the loose than millions of dead.

You guys really exaggerating possibility of nuclear war. Its not like one person could start global war with most powerful weapon on Earth. Its not really red button which should be pushed to annihilate everything.

Again nothing new with Russia. in WWII they attacked Finland twice, and after stopping them twice we in both cases still lost areas to them that they hadn't even gained during the fighting. It was a case of "we'll take those areas and you have nothing to say about it".

Three out of my four grandparents originally lived in the area that is now Russia. My great grandfather in particular was a farmer in the Karelian Isthmus and had to leave everything, he took his family with two small children and left as the border was moved towards the west by a simple Russian decision. None of us in the next three generations ever saw that area again.

But when you have a Little Dicktator with near absolute power it becomes different, and that is the current situation, especially combined with possible mental issues.

Nuclear war doesn't necessitate annihilating everything though. Both NATO and Russia have small-yield tactical devices that could be folded into conventional warfare. That's a terrifying prospect for the immediate conflict and every conflict in the future. Crossing the Rubicon.

I really need to get out more because I know where that Lukoil is located and I've been to that spot multiple times.

Putin is grabbing resources, land, oil, and will
Oil that, incidentally, the market is already refusing to buy in spite of the exceptions in the sanctions carved out specifically for it.

But by all means do go off on how making a land grab for a resource that most of the countries on that continent are trying to force themselves off of within the next decade has been worthy of flying the Mission Accomplished banner off of the side of the Kuznetsov.

Sad, man. Never thought about visiting your motherland? Maybe bought some land here, it shouldn't be too costly for you. I now its not perfect solution, but at least something. We always welcome to see you here.

Kinda. I still think there is some barrier between him and nuclear arsenal.

Lukoil isnt first, Yandex and Deripaska isnt okay with war.

Translation:
The crew of the ship "HELT" (flag of Panama, owned by Estonia), which sank off the coast of Odessa as a result of shelling by the occupiers was rescued. All 6 crew members are in satisfactory condition according to the Administration of Seaports of Ukraine

It'll be interesting how long western Nations will be able to endure hyperinflation, super high gas prices, crop prices skyrocketing, while the Russians, who are used to misery and suffering, deal with not having the latest iPhone.

It's time for the Western Nations to put their money where their mouth is. Get troops into Ukraine before it's too late. They're making the same mistake they did in 1937.

Ah yes. Go and believe that Putin won't try to fire nuclear weapons. I'm sure it's all bluster.

Ah yes, go ahead and believe Hitler only wanted Czech. Fools. Applying Western style warfare using sanctions, on a country's citizens that were bred to suffer. This is far from over

Russia is going to deal with way more than just not having the latest iPhone. Their money is completely useless at the moment and they're unable to really do much in the way of financial transactions outside of Russia. Companies are pulling out of Russia left and right, which will lead to unemployment and that's going to tank the economy even more than it already is. Plus you have major shipping carriers refusing to deliver to Russia which is going to lead to inflation within the country since the supply just won't be there. Yes, Russia can utilize a road and rail network from China, but the major population centers of Russia are a helluva long way away.

Speaking of the west though, why would crop prices skyrocket? Almost every western nation grows its own stuff and in the US, we even export a bunch of the stuff we grow. In certain areas, crop prices will go up, especially the Middle East where there isn't as much agricultural land available.

This is how you start a massive world war where nobody wins. Yes, from a moral perspective, Ukraine should be supported with military action against Russia. From a practical sense though, that's a horrible idea at the moment.
