This hits me because I have a friend who runs a ministry in Kyiv. He's been posting updates on Facebook and he's been doing well.

Then again, if the story of a Turkish merchant vessel being bomed is true, then a NATO member's property has been attacked, even if accidentally.

In the quoted post it says "another" implicating that one already was attacked. If the quoted post had said "if a NATO country is attacked" then you and he would be right, but it does say "another" and that's wrong.
Regarding the Turkish vessel, accidentally attacking or hitting a NATO members property does not invoke article 5

Even if the civilian structures are occupied by soldiers, they are still civilian infrastructures. Like the TV towers they bombed, or the city building. There are civilian streets and buildings around those "bases".
Russia promised not to bomb civilian structures.

BBC says its "aggression in Ukraine", it's not an invasion nor is it a war.
Just watched Katya Adler stop for a split second THREE TIMES during a live interview to work out what words she was supposed to say.
In fact, now I think of it they've not used the word "invasion" for some time.
It's clear the whole news team are under direction not to use the words war or invasion.
And they wonder why people want the licence removed...
I'd like to know who made this stupid decision (bbc news producer presumably).

I could write BIG historicaly inaccurate post, but I am too lazy.
Basically, Russians trust no one. Putin power isnt about trust, its about being well known and keeping status quo.
I could see two reasons behind current passive reaction to war:
1) No one wants to be a villain. I still can't believe what I see and I know whats happening from Ukrainians. I could see how average Russian could believe in any bull****, but not acts of violence against russian speaking Ukrainians.
2) People still not completely understand consequences of this war, its far away from them. No one asking them to sacrifice something. Yet protest against war is very expensive - few average monthly salaries,up to 15 days in prison, injuries and possibility of being fired.
3) Mix of first and second. Even if you cant believe in propaganda, its really hard to know about everything and dont have any opportunity to do something.

Chinese companies have to be loving this too. They're going to end up striking a better economic deal, while likely getting all the stuff Western companies left behind. It's going to be plug-and-play manufacturing and Russia is going to be so desperate to get their economy going again, they're just going to let China do it.
