Russian Invasion of Ukraine

They can't do that! Turkey is a member of NATO and the US and Israel are joined at the hip.
Israel is not part of NATO and they are remaining neutral for this conflict for multiple reasons. Russia helps control Syria and makes sure that Iran doesn't encroach too far onto the Syrian-Israeli border (which they are already present there). If Israel decides to spurn Russia, then Iran might just try to send weapons through the Golan Heights and bombard Israel while working on completing their nuclear arsenal (to also target Israel).

Humpf. Whatever happened to the world where a country paid off by the US stayed paid off?

@inCloud ,
how things are evolving regarding awareness of the situation among various persons you know? You talked about your father, did he move from his earlier views?
It's hard to understand from outside what people have in mind in a such closed society.

How many non-neo-nazis do you know with Nazi tattoos?
Wdym, it's pretty normal getting swastikas tattooed all over your body! Probably a "top 10 tattoo designs", somewhere between dragons and chinese characters. It's just like any other tattoo!!!! :dopey:

(sarcasm btw)

Until the last few years you might have struggled to understand that ... but after years of Trumpism, why would you continue to? As I've commented before, the US isn't a "closed society" by any means, but look at the outlandish views held there by a large proportion of the population. 🤨

Zelensky is now openly stating that Ukraine will not become a NATO member, and that Ukrainians are now realizing this. This satisfies Putin's #1 demand, and sets the stage for productive peace talks that could end the war within days. This means there is no need for tanks and infantry to enter Kiev, but artillery will merely make the rubble bounce until the agreement is signed.

Episode 2 Whatever GIF

There's not really anything Russia can do sanction-wise to the West that's meaningful in any way. We're already not buying their exports and the rubel is worthless so in the event any leader did have money tied up in Russia (which they might) it's not like it's worth anything at the moment.

Gives the crazies something to talk about in regards to stolen elections.

When i wrote "understand" in my sentence "It's hard to understand from outside what people have in mind in a such closed society", what i meant exactly was "evaluate". I'm not looking for the "why", but the "what".

Dont want to talk to him right now, most likely he would understand himself. Don't know about ordinary people, but looks like legit info leaking through propaganda dam. Anyway, in few weeks there would be riots because of various social problems. You can ignore censorship and obvious lie, but you cant ignore unemployment and **% inflation in one month.

There are some unique resources, but mostly you are right.

The statement announces more sanctions will follow to expand the list by including “top US officials, military officials, lawmakers, businessmen, experts, and media people who are Russophobic or contribute to inciting hatred towards Russia and the introduction of restrictive measures.”

Russian government and its banking and other institutions will collectively carry out these sanctions, it added.

I expect these sanctions could devolve into cyber hacking, fraud and other crimes onto these individuals. I am of the persuasion that Russian hacking on US industries including power grids is a serious problem getting worse by the day.

It might have been a headline looking to create sensationalism, but was there really any sort of major reaction to the woman who showed the sign on state TV? Now stories are running that her lawyers can't find her.

The latest news I saw was that she was fined 270¢
Sounds very very lenient

That's inevitable. However, I would be willing to bet that computer science resources and funding in the USA/NATO is leaving a lot on the table regarding cyber attacks against Russia. Put another way, I would hate to be on the receiving end of a proper, concerted, and importantly, "righteous" cyber assault by state and private American hackers. Remember that time a single pissed-off American hacker took down the entire North Korean internet? The reason American hackers don't target foreign countries is that....quite simply, there isn't a reason to. The worst thing Russia could do is give them that reason.

On related notes - if Russia follows through on seizing western business assets (including airplanes) and paying back debt in rubles, do they not realize that borrowing money in the future or attracting foreign business/investment is going to be a real problem? Like you can't just hand-wave away the concept of credit, even if you can willy wave away property rights and contracts. I get that they are cornered, economically, but they seem to be just ignoring reality at this point.

I get it ... but I've been obliged to accept that many people have views that seem weirdly absurd to me. I don't have to go to Russia for that, just my daily dip into the Fox News website provides all the 😳 I can handle.

Tucker Carlson
Why would we take Ukraine’s side, why aren’t we on Russia’s side? I’m totally confused!
Tucker Carlson
Why do I care what's going on in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? And I'm serious. And why shouldn't I root for Russia? Which I am.
Will his tune change now his colleagues are dying (and losing limbs), or will he still answer "no, Vladimir Putin didn’t do any of that"?

Seriously, I grew up Catholic and had no idea there were "Secrets of Fátima". But reading up about them, they're kind of wild since I didn't think the Catholic Church was into these kinds of "prophecies" per se. It all seems a bit...mystical?

Weirdly, in Russian Orthodoxy, there's an icon (religious art) called Our Lady Derzhavnaya that apparently claims that Theotokos (Mary in Christianity) holds the crown of Imperial Russia and won't give it back until House Romanov is restored.

Umm, have you heard about a bloke called Stalin, he was kinda big in your neck of the woods, responsible for the murder of millions. I think you need to lock up circa 51% of Russians.
And? We're talking about Nazis here, Stalin wasn't a Nazi. Worshipping Stalin is not a crime. Yet. Not until Putin's government is replaced by right-wing Russian nationalists.

IMO, Stalin was an evil but still a lesser evil than Hitler. And he was on the winning side, after all.

Alleged! That's hypocritical handwaving of the highest order.

:sly: Well, can't say I know many. However, even if Utkin dresses in SS uniform to do Nazi salutes in front of a mirror at his home, it's not like he can be punished for that. But it's not known about him publicly saying what Nazis say or doing what Nazis do. What Putin awarded medals to Utkin was clearly not for his tattoos. And again: you seem to be calling the whole Wagner PMC Nazis because of Utkin alone, and you compare dozens of monuments and streets named after Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevich (who did things a lot worse than wearing tattoos) in Ukraine to "oh look, this man standing next to Putin is a Nazi, look at his tattoos!".

Anyway, at least Russian state TV doesn't quote Adolf Eichmann (one of main organisers of Holocaust) calling for extermination of a nation's children.

To everyone else who quoted my previous post: I'm not ignoring you, I'll respond to you later, I just don't live on this forum.

The Nazi debate is a distraction from the issue at hand. Can we all agree that the presence of Nazis in a country does not provide sufficient justification to invade said country or otherwise violate that nation's sovereignty? I doubt there is a single country on earth free from right wing extremists / Nazis, including Russia. Whether or not there are Nazi's in Ukraine is immaterial to Russia's attempt to erase Ukraine.

Now stories are running that her lawyers can't find her.
Looks like she is ok. Right now its fine of 30k(250$), but will be more.

People retiring from TV, some running out of the country. Its clearly the end of current regime in current form. We could expect full size dictatorship or collapse.
Anyway, at least Russian state TV doesn't quote Adolf Eichmann (one of main organisers of Holocaust) calling for extermination of a nation's children.
Right now Russian army killing Ukrainian childrens and Russian TV saying that they killing only Nazi's. I could see why Ukrainians saying what they saying, this could be justified. What Russians saying and doing can't.

Is it just me, or is it a dead giveaway that Russia's hilarious counter-sanctions include Hunter Biden and the now-politically irrelevant Hillary Clinton? It's just straight-up waving the Republican bogeymen, without any reason for them being chosen for sanctions other than because they're the people Trump (and therefore Russia) has been trying to make the conversation all about for the last five years.

Also, fun note... it seems they sanctioned the now-dead used car salesman Joseph Robinette Biden, not the 46th President of the United States Joseph Robinette Biden Junior.
