Absolutely brilliant 355C races this evening, across many circuits, with MHailwood, Henrik, kemp, Arvore, HairyDave, plckr00. Really, very enjoyable. There are several that I'd love to see a replay of.

Yep another full Lobby racing night.👍
We needed our official videographer to be present...:sly:

Pleasure racing with you guys last night. Must of finished about 1.30am! The race at Mugello was an all time classic. Absolutely no contact for about six races and some seriously quick people in the lobby.

Great. I'll just compile a little list so we know who to expect (last time there was a bit of waiting around with not being sure who may still come).

I'll be racing, if there is a free slot :-)

Top Gear will have to be on iPlayer this week! Sounds like they have the 458 as well.................

I won't talk about the first race. I'll make a general apology to people I may have hit in race 2. Unfortunately, I can't remember them all.

In particular, I hit Kemp very hard into Campagnano. I knocked jjaisli a couple of times. I think I may have hit Arvore & Bullie once or twice; sorry for that. Although really, I took more knocks than I gave, and far more costly (I was put deep in the gravel on 3 occasions).

Part of the reason for collisions I think was firstly the wet conditions, but also just the variations in pace across players. It's difficult for a pack to follow each other very cleanly. For example, following jjaisli, I didn't know his lines, braking points, speed through corners etc. In this situation I always try to be cautious. But when I did this, I would get swallowed up from behind and bumped around. So that pressured me to keep close and to make a move.

I was very well prepared. I had a good lap down, and had very solid braking points. But in that race I was way out of my comfort zone. I think people were braking far too late in those circumstances, especially given the lack of practice some may have had.

Normally the pressure is to avoid braking too late. But I was under so much pressure to avoid braking too early, because every time I braked at a sensible point, someone flung it up the inside, or straight into the back of me. This was a real problem when I was following another car (Kemp on one occasion) - I'm always very conservative with braking behind other cars, but I couldn't do that today.

On occasions, I found myself pulling to the inside in braking zones to give the car behind me a clean run to outbrake itself. When following Kemp, I did this, but the car behind followed to the side and in my slipstream right up to the braking point. It was my mistake to hit Kemp, but if I braked at a sensible point, I would've been hit (and was several other times).

//

The positive stuff I can say is, thanks for organising it Jeff. And also well done to Henrik for the very solid pace, especially in the 2nd race (and FINGERSANDTHUMBS also in race 2).

Thanks to Jeff for organizing 👍

Qualify: Wet qualify, I had strong feeling about this (not!) because my total amount of wet laps was 7. I struggled a bit in the first third of the track for some reason, but I got my act together for the rest of the lap and I just got the 3rd position in front of jjaisli.

Race 1: I kept my place in the start and I was settling behind Alan and mhm66 to monitor their battle for the lead and if I could take an advantage from it. I wasn't focused enough and jjaisli took an advantage out of that and overtook me. After that we had nice couple of laps were we battled for the 3rd position. In the end I got my position back and when I was able to drop jjaisli from my draft I started to make difference. Meanwhile Alan and mhm66 had run away a bit and I started to try to catch them. Alan ran away in the lead but I was able to catch mhm66 a bit, but then our difference stood still on about 3s for several laps. At one point I decided, that if I want to challenge him, I need to pick up my pace. So I raised my risk level, I started to brake 1-2m later on every place and tried to gain time everywhere I could. Slowly the gap went down tenth by tenth. I was amazed that I was able to keep the car on track with such high risk level, but even more amazed that mhm66 didn't do a single mistake! In the end we had something like 0,5s difference. Great race, even though we didn't switch our places once. Big pressure and fight for tenths. I would've been willing to pay something for jjaisli for couple of extra laps

Race 2: Before this event I thought, that I wonder when my first really bad race comes. Every race can't simply go well, and that has after all been the case for me so far in both, 348 and 355 Challenge series. Well, now it came.

I didn't get a good start, but because there was some traffic Alan and mhm66 couldn't get an advantage out of it. Soon the carnage started. I don't think anyone can get clean papers out of this race! So apologies from me too, if there was someone that I hit and didn't realize it. In couple of first corners there were some action and I luckily avoided all of it. Things were looking good and I was in the middle of the pack. Then suddenly there was couple of corners were I was left outside and cars passed me from the inside. At the end of the first lap I found myself from the last place. I started to make my way slowly up and at some point I found myself with a battle against kemp (again! we seem to always meet in wet races). When coming to Campagnano I was too late on brakes, I tried to switch line so that I wouldn't hit him, but I still gave him a little nudge. I drove to the outer line and let him pass from the inside immediately there in the Campagnano. But naturally my speed wasn't quite good enough for the next corner and the pack behind me were gaining. I decided to defend the inner line and my low speed clearly caused some mix-up in Soratte. Race continued and at some point I found myself from 5th place, nobody close ahead. Now things were looking good. I was coming into Campagnano and when I started braking I saw from the mirror that car behind me (I think it was Alan) was hit from the behind and he was coming fast towards me. I tried to leave the inside open, but in the end someone hit me and I found myself from the gravel. Coming back from there, I saw a whole group of cars sailing by. I must say, that at this moment I wasn't feeling very happy :ouch:

I tried to make my way through again and I was in jjaisli's slipstream coming in to Curva Grande and I don't know quite what I was trying. It was semi-overtake I think. Meaning that I wasn't on his side, but I ruined my line. Thanks to my stupid action, I went wide to the grass, lost control of my car and because the place was such as it was, I didn't dare to come back to track until everyone had pass me :banghead:

At this point, I thought that I can still make it. Once again, huge attempt to catch everyone and when maybe lap or two later I was trying to overtake new_soul in the same place, we had a contact and I was off again! (Again new_soul, it was really rushed overtake attempt by me, I was hurrying the overtake too much, I'm as much guilty for it as you. In fact I think it was more of my fault). So, once again, on the grass in the fastest place on the track. This time my cars nose was directly on the railing and I had to reverse back to track. Then it was only about saving some points if possible and I finished 9th I think. What a terrible race for me :grumpy:

Very entertaining race and very frustrating race. So I guess that in the end it's +/-0. Let's hope for a better "weekend" in Spa!

Edit: Just to make it clear, I still had fun. Racing can be a mess from time to time. Mainly I was frustrated to myself because of those mistakes, in the end they were the ones that destroyed my race. So, looking forward for next race and hope to see all of you in there 👍

For example, following jjaisli, I didn't know his lines, braking points, speed through corners etc. In this situation I always try to be cautious. But when I did this, I would get swallowed up from behind and bumped around.

This seems to be basically the problem. And it comes worse when there is more drivers close to each other. Basically everyone should always brake earlier than the driver in front of him, but it doesn't happen. Everyone just waits for their braking mark and then you can pick up pieces from the gravel. Especially when your speed is increased in the straight thanks to slipstream and if you don't take that in to consideration when you start to brake.

If I catch someone and I don't know his braking points yet, I always brake a lot sooner than on my normal braking points. So that I won't hit him in the first corner and I have time to learn his braking points. Another thing that I do, is that I always try to keep different line at least when I start to brake. If he for some reason brakes a lot earlier than me, I wont immediately hit him in the back. And when driving behind someone, you don't have to push that hard. It doesn't matter if you loose a bit of time when coming into corner, you will gain it back in the slipstream on the next straight. And when you start to know his braking points, then you can start to brake later if the battle is really even.

Really enjoyed the races this weekend. My brief summary:

Quali - Uneventful so far as the lap itself was concerned, but I was distracted by trying not mess up and hinder the car behind. It was one of the quicker guys (mhm66 I think) and I was intent on keeping a steady pace and not ruining a front-runner's chance of a hot lap.

Race 1: After the first few corners, there was an incident ahead and I passed new_soul under Yellow flags. I dropped back to let him through, but then could not re-join cleanly so ended up last. Manage to get a few places back, then found myself following Arvoure for the remainder of the race. The gap was down to about 1.5 seconds come the finish, but his consistent driving gave me no chance to catch or attempt a pass.

Race 2: Overall, a better race for me. I left the track trying to avoid a pile-up ahead, which left me facing the wrong way and last again. Had a very good few laps with Bullie, but despite being a little quicker at the time, could not find a gap to pass cleanly. I could see he was on the edge, and any contact would have him straight off the road. Managed to get by eventually, but had no time to try catch the man ahead.

I felt this was a better weekend for me. The last race at Silverstone left me frustrated and with nothing more to offer. This weekend, I felt that I had more pace and consistency, which on another day might have meant a few more positions/points. I was working to get a set-up that worked for me, and I must thank Alan for some tips and advice that he kindly offered.

Looking forward to Spa: hopefully I can push on and advance a few more places come race day.

Event No 4 - August 1st, 2010 - 20:00 GMT - Vallelunga - RACE RECAP

I want to thank those who participated in the 4th round of the '1996' Ferrari F355 Challenge season from Vallelunga. It was nice to see the lobby creep up in size with the additional of several people who had been away for the last event at Silverstone.

QUALIFYING: 2 laps - conditions 50% dry/wet chosen at random

I flipped a coin and tails meant it was wet qualifying for the third time this season. At the start of qualifying, I found myself last on the grid of 12 and as such, tried to build up a long gap to the cars in front. When Alan in front of me finally started to move, I did the same. But I believe one car in front of him had a slight problem and he had to back off. At that point, I was actually starting to worry about the cars coming up behind me. Once I was under way, I was very happy with my lap and noticed I wasn't too far off the pace from Alan in front of me. But "not too far off" with several aces in this lobby, proved my time was only good enough for 4th on the grid.

RACE 1 (Feature Race): - 20 Laps - Dry

Unlike Silverstone, where I was maybe just fast enough to stay away from the cars behind me, but helplessly off the pace of the guys in front of me, Vallelunga proved to be quite different. Putting in a string of more than a dozen strong, solid laps in the mid 1:43 range, was something I was very proud of. But (a) as good as it was, it just wasn't quite fast enough to hang on to the guys in front. And (b) when I pushed harder and harder to try and stay with Vompatti in front of me (I managed to equal my PB of 1:43.23 in the process) I just couldn't maintain that kind of pace and eventually starting making a few small errors here or there which slowly pushed me out of contention when I lost Vompatti's draft. From that point on, I just tried to maintain that pace and bring it home in 4th. I would eventually finish about 10 seconds behind Vompatti and about 15 seconds in front of turnupdaheat behind me.

For a few laps I managed to have a good scrap with Vompatti but in the end, he simply proved too fast and consistent. Likewise, I had Kemp about 2 seconds behind me for a few laps and holding steady, causing me to occasionally glance at the interval timer with a bit of worry. Eventually, he made a mistake and dropped back. All in all, exciting for a few laps, a tad stale toward the end, but a good, solid race, where I finished in the same position as where I qualified. Not bad. Up front, Alan managed to take both the win and fastest lap and toward the last few laps, it looked like Vompatti was having a real go at mhm66, with Henrik managing to hold him off at the end. Exciting stuff at the front.

RACE 2 (Sprint Race): 15 Laps - Wet

I guess the shameful and morose post race discussion in the lobby said it all. This race was nothing short of a red-faced, embarrassment for almost everybody who took part. I don't know what the heck came over all of us other than a good dose of the red mist, but nearly everybody put in moves that were borderline scandalous. And much to my shame, I leant my own hand to a few rather stupid moves, including a dive bomb up the inside of Turnupdaheat going into Tornantino (which left AlanG with nowhere to go). But the real 'wonder move' of my night, was an ill conceived run on lap 5 to get around both Vompatti and Rhino, who for different reasons, had a bad line exiting Cimini 2. I had so much speed compared to the two of them and combined with the draft, I was nearly 20-kmh faster and I just couldn't help myself. And when I finally found an opening to go around them (they were side by side) I realized I had left my braking VERY late, and was horrified to see Team Portugal (Arvore & GTP_bullie77) going into Compagnano, side by side and directly in my path!!! :scared: And I was about to take both of them out. So I made the decision to release the brakes and steer left, putting myself into the gravel. :ouch::embarrassed: But there was also the matter of broadsiding Derek while he was completely sideways (I didn't stop after this as I didn't really feel it was my fault) and at that point, at least 4~5 cars got around me in the ensuing mess, and getting sideways myself on a number of occasions.

All in all, nobody can claim this race wasn't exciting. But in retorspect, I guess we call could have dealt with slightly less drama and a little extra race-craft. I'm processing the video now and I'm sure it's going to be a big hit. And those of us who have one, will likely find our GTP tags revoked.

I won't go into details or offer a play by play of this race. It's too late and it was just far too much of a mess. I'll let the video speak for itself. My apologies for anybody I may have knocked, banged or hacked in this round.

Combined Results from Round 4:

web.jpg

As expected, AlanG, mhm66 & Vompatti completely dominated the feature race. But the 'Thunderdome' like Sprint Race resulted in a bit of a shake up. Congratulations to both mhm66 & FINGERSANDTHUMBS for being able to avoid slightly more carnage than the rest of us and bringing it home safe in a 1-2.

This round also saw a rather unique 3 way tie for 4th place and a 2 way tie for 7th.

Combined Series Standings (After 4 Rounds)
1) - mhm66 - enzo - 109
2) - jjaisli - Forza G27 - 92
3) - FINGERSANDTHUMBS - Creative - 74
4) - AlanG184 - GTPlanet - 73
5) - kemp1010 - MX - 61
6) - arvore - Mandolin Club Racing - 58
7) - tunrupdaheat - ScudEire - 50
8) - vompatti - ILRT - 47
9) - Redgate - Eurogamer - 28
10) - GTP_bullie77 - Lusitania Racing - 24
11) - Rhino_WJB - Team Z - 22
12) - new_soul - UKOG - 21
13) - GTP_Hun - T L Team - 18
14) - frawe - Frawe - 13
15) - L449KUX - TheRacingElite - 10
16) - SimcoeAce - Mad Dogs - 6
17) - Firedshot - TheRacingElite - 4

With just one round left, only 4 players have a mathematical chance of winning the championship. But simply by showing up, combined with a lousy result by me, will almost assure Henrik the top spot on the podium. But 2nd place is up for grabs and a hard charing AlanG stands a good chance of yanking it away. All the more impressive considering he missed the first two rounds. What's more those in the 3~8 & 9~12 spots are really in a deep battle and this leaderboard could be completely shaken up and spun around when the dust settles.

Get working on those setups. Spa is coming up in two weeks!

I have a copy of SCC coming. JJaisli, I think you are doing a fabulous job. I hope you continue and start a new championship soon, so I can join. In the meanwhile, I enjoy reading here.

Well for me this was some great races.

I've got 2th spot in qual.

In the first race I was just behind alan, and I knew that I had to get past him fast,or he would soon pull away. The first lap I stayed behind him,but at the second lap I made a late breaking attemp in the hairpin, but It was a bad move and alan was forced out so I gave the position back. After that he was pulling away about 0.4-0.5 a lap,and there was nothing I could do.With wompatti 3.5 sec behind I started thinking of just keeping 2th,but after about half of the race,he was slowly gaining on me.I didn't wanted to push, but was doing solid laps at the low 1:43,but he was getting awful close at the end,but I just managed to get 2th.

In the start of the wet race I was just behind alan(again)but I saw him go wide in turn 2,and on the following straight I managed to pass several cars.In the hairpin I again made a bad move(I think it was on new_soul)and he was forced out so I let him and another car pass before joining the race.I made it through the traffic, and then I was suddently in the lead with FINGERS slowly dropping with every lap. From there on I ran on my own and got a win with 20 sec. to 2th.And a fastest lap.

Jeff,

Once again thank you for the efforts you have put at cost of your family time simply for our entertainment. We owe you that much for the very good moments you delivered in the last months!

I will miss (almost surely) the 'goodbye' race for the Challenge Series at Spa. I'll be down south in the Algarve then for a very well deserved holidays (I keep saying this to my boss). Thank you guys for the great fun we had together in these last months. See you all on track!

(PS - Alan thanks for the late races in GT5P. Those few ones on Eiger in the the 350Z were absolutely brilliant!)

Once again Jeff thanks for organising these events.👍

Qualify:

What can I say:embarrassed: went off on the very first corner(Cimini 1) grass,sand...last place.:ill::grumpy::dunce:

Race 1: Tried to battle kemp for a few laps, but already knew from the practice sessions during the week that it would be very hard because his pace was stronger than mine, eventually made a mistake and saw him sail off:indiff: than I had a very good battle with Rhino_WJB(sorry again for some bumping,my friend, but they were all unintentional and due to the drafting effect and different breaking points and lack of better racing skills,at the moment they kind of seemed pretty harmless(since I never took you off or took advantage of any of those less smart moves, but I know it can be annoying and distracting and only in the after race chat I realized You were disturbed by them, again I sincerely apologize:tup:), managed to build on some gap to him but kemp was already 8 seconds away so sailed to the finish line.

Race 2 :Was very interesting and exciting but also very hectic and eventful:scared: I guess everyone had his share of nudges, taken and given, and the final grid results were,to say the least, surprising. As for myself I had a nice battle with Kemp where his fastest pace prevailed but a mistake in the 14Th lap cost him the position in the end of the race, better luck next time man.👍:)

arvore - No problem my end. You apologised when I questioned what happened in the lobby, and that was enough.

vompatti makes a very valid point about picking braking points when following another car. The guy behind simply cannot drive his usual or TT lines, as the two braking points are almost certainly different. In my case, I know I brake early for most corners anyway, which I suppose does not help the matter. It is the responsibility of the guy making the pass to do it safely and cleanly, and it is here where I try my hardest in any race: to never bump or nudge the guy ahead. If I do, it is from a driving error, which means I have lost control of the car, which in turn means I am not driving properly.

I made a few bumps myself, for which I apologise if they affected any part of the race. Contact happens in racing, and I do not mind the odd bump or two 👍

Thanks everybody. And I hope I wasn't being too harsh in my criticisms about race 2. In reality, I found it all rather comical. :)

For the record, my setup for this event:
springs: soft/soft
dampeners: soft/soft
roll bars: hard/hard
ride height: -0.30 / +0.30
camber: -4.00 / -3.20
toe: +0.05 / -0.01

Sergio--I'm sorry you'll be away for the final round but I want to thank you for your participation in this series, your honest style, your tenacity and your clean racing ethos. I'm sure we'll meet again on line soon.

I'm glad to see parts of the wet race again. With the three times I bumped into Jeff, I actually see now how I didn't really do anything wrong. I would categorise them all as racing incidents, or at least very hard to avoid in those situations.

I love the banzai move at 3:31 (wet video 1). BAM! Take that Derek!
