An induced coma is a period of unconsciousness controlled by drugs. There is also a massive difference between a "sleep" and being unconscious, the induced coma is designed to protect the brain from damage of fluid caused by a head injury, as your skull can't swell like your leg might, if it gets injured, it is highly dangerous. The drugs work to stop it swelling, Aneurysm's and hypertension (high blood pressure) in the brain.

It is far removed from anything a dentist may give you, ie, a local anaesthetic or at worst a general anaesthetic.

He was in the induced coma for 48 hours iirc.

btw, it looked like Massa was going to recoop by the next race but, if all the rumors of Alonso being announced as a Ferrari driver at the Italian GP is true, there might be a spaniard in the Belgian GP or Italian GP.

Finally, i race i will be looking forward to. From the looks of it, Schumacher will be in red for the rest of the year, or whenever Massa returns

Couldn't Ferrari just stick him in something like an older F1 car or something to get him back into the idea of Single seater racing again? Would that be breaking the testing rules?
 
This is just what this lackluster season needed, an exciting new addition to the line-up, I wait eagerly in anticipation for the next gp.
 
It's a shame really, because many people will be out to see Schummi's breif return to F1 and the first race he is back is likely to be the most boring track of the year (assumption and subjective of course), ah well hopefully it will be a good race.
 
I reckon he'll be pretty poor to begin with. Seeing as he's never driven the car before. He's also probably put on a few pounds since his retirement!

I expect him to get better and better the more races he does though. We'll just have to wait and see how many he gets.

Oh, and maybe also reading up on brain surgery.

Anyway, I'm a little disappointed they went with Schumacher, I kind of wanted Bourdais or Gene to come in and show us what they've got.
Still, people wanted to compare Hamilton to Schumi really can now. It will be interesting to see how fast he can adapt to the new cars and get on pace.

I caught this story at work, and after confirming it's reliability on the Ferrari and MS's official sites, a co-worker (the other F1 nut in the office) and myself starting brainstorming ways for Ferrari to get him some seat time.

At first we were ecstatic to have found this:
ii) young driver training, any such driver having not competed in an F1 World Championship Event in the preceding 24 months nor tested a Formula One car on more than four days in the same 24 month period.
Schumi would have fit the 24month rule. Possibly failed the four day thing that follows but we weren't sure. ...this didn't make any sense to either of us though, or STR would've gotten Alguersuari more than just a few straight line pulls.

So...

22) TRACK AND WIND TUNNEL TESTING
22.1
a) Track testing shall be considered any track running time undertaken by a competitor entered in the Championship with the exception of :
i) promotional or demonstration events carried out using tyres provided specifically for this purpose by the appointed supplier ;
ii) three one day young driver training tests carried out between the end of the last Event of the Championship and 31 December of the same year, any such driver having not competed in more than two F1 World Championship Events ;
iii) eight one day aerodynamic tests carried out on FIA approved straight line or constant radius sites between 1 January 2009 and the end of the last Event of the Championship.
b) ...

c) No track testing may take place between the start of the week preceding the first Event of the Championship and 31 December of the same year.
By my count, MS has participated in more than 2 GP's over the past 17 or so years. So unless they take him on a hastily put together road-show to get him some time doing donuts in intermediate tires somewhere in Russia, I think they're out of options.



Either way, I'm happy to see MS step up. As I mentioned (edit: in the other thread) earlier in this thread, I'm not a big fan of his. But it's an interesting story with plenty of room to get more interesting still.
Obviously, I don't expect him to be on the form that he was during his championship years earlier this decade, but it does give people the opportunity to make some sort of comparison (however valid) between the newest generation of talent in the sport and the previous.
 
The situation that is similar to Schumacher's is when Nigel Mansell came back in between CART races and raced for Williams in 1994.

Mansell's biggest talent showed through straight away as he qualified on the front row for the French grand prix he retired in the end but was on his way to third behind Schumacher and Hill.

Some of his other outings were less successful but he didn't do that badly and his biggest strong point (qualifying) was still at a very good level. Mansell's aggregate qualifying position was 2.5 with Hill's only slightly better at 2.

He even won a race in the last round in Australia but really this was due to a suspect tussle meaning both Hill and Schumacher who were miles ahead in that race to both retire.

It would be nice to hear the opinion of someone who can remember how Mansell did in 1994 as I'm only going of stats and Wikipedia which doesn't really tell the full story and hopefully it could give some insight into how Schumacher might fare although I'm not really sure what Schumacher's strong point was....
 
Amazing, I did'nt think for a second Mr. Shumacher would race again. It will be very interesting to see how he will fare after so long. There have been so many changes to the cars it will be a tough challenge.
 
As far as I remember, the biggest and most impressive "come back" ever was done by Niki Lauda. He left mid-season in 1979 and returned in 1982. He was 4th in the first '82 GP, and he won the 3rd of that season.

Then, in 1984, he got his third (and last) championship, nine years after his first (1975).

I always get a kick out of the Hamilton-Schumacher debates. You can't mention any weaknesses for Schumacher (and this goes for all past F1 champions as well), otherwise you're accused of heresy. I don't get why you can't compare drivers of today to the ones of the past without putting the latter on pedestals, because if you don't say the older drivers are always better, you get chastised. I understand circumstances were sometimes tougher in the old days, but that doesn't mean they were gods. They had weaknesses as well.

Anyways, people asked for it, so there you have it. Hamilton vs. Schumacher, once and for all, sans armchair historians.
 
This is awesome news, but he might be a bit rusty - Jenson's probably crappin' himself.

No he's not, Jenson will probably be rubbing his hands and hoping Schumacher is on form and able to drive a wedge between him and the Red Bulls.

Of course, realistically I don't expect Schumacher to be challenging for wins, I expect he will be within a tenth of Kimi, but ultimately slower as good of driver as he is, It's a long break and a completely new car with zero testing (as far as I am aware) I would be very surprised if he can keep up with Kimi.
