Mansell testing for a short comeback to F1 with Williams.
Something that Schumacher won't be able to do.
Notice how the laptimes dropped.

wow! crazy news and yet so good to hear :)

I look forward to the Vettel v Hamilton v Schumacher extravaganza at Valencia with baited breath

best F1 news all year imo

MS is coming back that ought to make the race very interesting. I haven't watched much F1 this season but this definitely catches my eye

This is fantastic. Ferrari will finally win. I hope that he probably stays for awhile, maybe the rest of the season, despite being 40.

Can someone explain to me how someone who made Formula 1 the most boring form of motorsport on earth from 2000 to 2005 will suddently make it more interesting?

I'm probably the only guy in the world who never rode Schumachin's nutsack to hell and back... I despise the man with a passion, and all I see in this, quite frankly, is another attempt at owning another record.

Ricardo Patrese holds the record at 256 starts in a Formula 1 car. Schumacher has 250. Now, let's think a bit. There are 7 races left this year. If Massa does not come back this season, and Schumarsehole participates in all 7 starts... Yep.

More Male Cow Poop from the Scuderia...

This time he's got rivals. Real rivals with real winning options. Like Red Bull.

I thought Rubens Barrichello got that record...

One thing I am wondewring about is, is he fit enough anymore? Is he the same he was 3 years ago, or has he let himself go? He probably is, ever since he retired all he has done was, water sports, skiing, smowboarding, bike racing, hang gliding, piloting, sky diving, the stig. He probably is.

He did, quite a while ago actually. He currently stands at 277 race starts.

Edit: And Schumacher has only 248 starts, compared to 250 entries.

Yes, I'm familiar with that particular installment of xkcd, as is the entire Internet. Maybe I just think it prudent to make sure that people don't get attacked for attempting some supposedly terrible thing that they can't even perpetrate.

Didn't Schumacher have the record for the most laps ever done in F1 until Rubens took that record at Monaco this year?

What Mansell did in late '94 was pretty impressive IMHO. His qualifying pace was definitely up there with Hill (and Schumacher). I know the Williams FW16 was considered probably the best car of the season, but clearly Mansell was on pace. His race pace seemed to be slower, but maybe that was just due to fitness, but still impressive nevertheless.

To be fair however, Mansell did spend the entire 1993 season in IndyCar/CART (professional motor racing). I do not believe Schumi has spent '07 or '08 in full season of racing of a high level motorsport (correct me if I'm wrong).

That being said, I expect no less than a race win from Schumacher in his 2nd or 3rd race.

You're right, Rubens holds the record. Doesn't make it more of a good idea to send a washed up driver with no sense of sportsmanship who relied upon driver aids, shady maneuvers and team orders to win 7 championships, all of which he won with absolutely no competition whatsoever, and rewrite every record in the book back on the track...

who relied upon driver aids, shady maneuvers and team orders to win 7 championships,

Well now he does have competition, he doesn't have the best car nor the best engineer (or team orders) and no driver aids.. so lets see how he goes instead of just questioning ferrari and schuey's motives and idea for replacing massa.

we get it you dont like him. but thats not going to change what others think of him and its not going to change the fact that hes filling in for massa nor is it going to change the fact he has alot of records that will not be broken for some time. so maybe you should just go chill and take a puff of the peace pipe.

but it should defiantly add some spice to the season.

And don't forget to pass :sly:

Now that's totally unfair.

By my count, only three of those championships were won with team orders...

That said... Schumi was a brilliant driver in his day... whether or not he was an arrogant, cheating arse doesn't change that fact.

My main worry is that he will underperform... Ferrari needs points... badly... to salvage what is left of this season for themselves.

Cant they give MS last years F1 to try? at least he can "test" an F1 sorta car again, i know its not the same one but its gotta be better than nothing.

He did have competition. Against Hakkinen who beat him, against Villeneuve who beat him and against Alonso who beat him. See competition.

I reckon Michael will be hugely over-optimistic towards the Ferrari's downforce levels, and crash it in the first corner already

Michael did quite a few tests back in 2008 with simulated 2009 downforce levels and the drivers who were there on those days commented how amazingly fast he was.

Why don't Ferrari just "sell" him a copy of the F60 so that Michael and his friends (mechanics) can go out on for a trackday.

1st time no T.C.
1st time racing Hamilton
1st timer in 2years driving an F1
1st time at Valencia

It will be a big learning curve and a reality check in the 1st practice season.

Looking forward to this next GP :D

I wouldn't say "only".

However, with an 18 point lead over a guy who's won 1 race this year, Button must be inevitably cheered by the notion that there's now FIVE people all challenging to take points (and wins) off each other (Barrichello, Webber, Vettel, Hamilton, Schumacher).

Correct me if im wrong.. but racing hamilton will have nothing to do with it..
and he did race non TC cars for testing and was the quickest?

What on earth is happening in F1 this year?
Early BAR Brawn GP dominance.
Button winning races...👍
Ferrari/Mclaren messing around in the back of the field.:boggled:
FOTA breakaway series!?!?!?💡
Mosley out!(I'll wait till it happens to cheer)
Bourdais booted for a 19 year old with 3 million.:yuck:
Massa injured.:ouch::(
Hamilton wins in the MP4/24?!?!(was getting lapped by the BGP001 for how long and now is winning???)
Renault suspended.:banghead:
BWM leaving?
Now MS is returning? WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

I really don't like this situation with Massa getting injured and all, especially after events at Brands Hatch. I hope he recovers enough to be normal again, not worried if he drives again or not, just be healthy. Also because of that I feel bad that I'm so excited to have MS taking the grid in Spain. (I will 100% believe it come practice in Valencia.)

That said, this is a great chance for Ferrari R&D. I'm glad to see MS returning to the team, regardless of what has happened before. Even if he wont preform as well as he may be expected to, (by the fans) he knows what the car should be doing. If the MP4/24 has seen such improvements, while the F60 has been somewhat lacking, perhaps being as there is no testing, Schumi can do just that, if it ends up in podiums and WCC points then all the better. I don't see why MS could not greatly help with the 2010 cars development, hes got 8 points paying test sessions ahead.

Ferrari will be no worse off with Schumacher, in fact, even though Bourdais just jumped out of a car he would if anything, do worse. If Kimi "the fastest driver in the world" can't win in the F60 Seabass won't even come close.
Even just for the publicity this will bring Ferrari it will be welllll worth it. IMO this is like Earnhardt coming back from the dead to race again, alright maybe not just like that but still, regardless if some people don't like him or not, he is still a legend. No one is losing here. If the Renault ban is lifted, that will make 4 WDC champions on the grid come Sunday. When is the last time that happened? Schumacher's career will not be summed up by these remaining 8 races, he's already written his book.

All I've got to say besides the above is I can't wait for Valencia. This season started as a snooze fest, now it's got more twists and turns than the Nordschleife. I don't think it could get more interesting to tell the truth. MS coming back to the sport is one of the best turns, however the events leading to him taking a seat back at Ferrari are terrible. I wish Felipe a speedy recovery, hopefully to retake his spot on the grid next season, if not that's alright with me, as long as he has his health. That's a terrible, freak way to have your career wrapped up, I really hope it won't be, however I'd understand if he wanted to hang it up. Who knows where this season will go, I'd like to see Schumi do well, but I'll keep my expectations low.

Mark Martin is winning Nascar races, Michael Schumacher is driving a Ferrari in F1 again, is 2009 a window into the past or something?

What could be more dramatic now, Schumacher vs Hamilton (reigning champion) or Schumacher vs Alonso (last person to beat him)?

I'd pick the latter, cant wait!

I dont think the traction control thing will be an issue, and its hardly his first time without it. Between 1994 and 2004 (ish) he was racing without TC, so he has actually raced without TC for more than half of his career. Racing Hamiltion wont bother him, it will be 'just another opponent' in his eyes. A very talented one mind, but that wont be a new experience for him.

And yes, I'm looking forward to the next GP too :D

He isn't my favourite driver of all time, but it is impossible to try and deny his achievements and ability, even at 40. Doing so, in my opinion, sounds rather bitter and ignorant.
