Shootings and explosions in Paris.

This is truly a very sad night. CNN is saying around 100 killed at concert.
The EU better wake up. Unfortunately I don't think this is the end of it.

I was in Boston during the marathon bombing, though not near the site. Somehow following this is affecting me more than back then. Maybe because it's such a larger scale, it has me really worried for the future of the world.

I know Paris will survive. It's strong. But this is not simply an unavoidable tragedy, it's an ongoing conflict and the solution is not as easy as being strong and comforting one another.

These kinds of things always make me wonder how I could do more to fix the planet's problems.

Still no confirmation on where the last two gunmen are. Gunmen in concert hall have been killed. At least two still at large.

The wife got us tickets to surprise me and have a nice evening out. We heard the explosions while we were inside the stadium watching the (very bad) match.

Both Mrs. S and I thought it's just fans using some fire crackers and it took a while until the news broke in the stadium.

Overcrowded mobile networks...I posted this in a football thread before but thought it may add value to this thread too.

You were awfully close, nice to see you're ok.

I considered going to Paris for that EoDC concert. Kill two birds of one stone: see the City of Lights again, listen to one of my favorite bands. Mind you, there were no plans that were aborted last minute due to an apparently unlucky, but ultimately fortuitous coincidence. It was just... A thought that crossed my mind. One of those ideas that never quite become a project.

It's still close enough to make me shiver. Can't imagine how you must feel now, Mr. S.

.

Alas, the endless river of blood that is human history keeps flowing and growing larger. Perhaps one day we'll realize we can't put ten thousand of us together without something bad happening sooner or later, and reorganize accordingly. As it is now, the world is too hard for us to understand and to live in. You have those madmen shooting up innocent people. And then you have the people who'll ask for more innocent people to be shot and bombed in retaliation. And the river will keep growing, and growing; who knows if one day it will overflow and we'll manage to wipe ourselves off the face of Earth.

"L'enfer, c'est les autres", said famous Parisienne Jean-Paul Sartre. Hell is the others. I am not sure even he ever understood how powerful of a sentence is.

Yep we definitely agree.

My wife's cousin lost 5 (!!!) friends in the attack on the restaurant. Also, one of her friends lives right next to the Bataclan but she was out. She can't go home right now but is at a friends place.

In the unlikely event that one of you is in Paris and needs shelter: we are here for you. All you have to do is get to Suresnes (Pont de Suresnes, so really 50m from the Paris city limit). PM me in that case and I'll give you my mobile number.

Its a sad tragedy that this has happened.

My condolences go to the people killed and their families. I've been to Paris, it used to be one of my favorite places with its calm atmosphere, beautiful historical architecture and nice people. It deserves a better fate than being the first sacrifice of the completely out-of-control political course of the EU.

Fox is now reporting 158.

A British commentator characterized the closing of the borders as "interesting", since it had always been thought they were dealing with domestic terrorists.

The question is, how domestic those terrorists really are.

The answer might also bring some insight to the question of closing borders.

Maybe it's a case "you can never be too careful........ Or certain."

My thoughts and prayers are with all those who know people injured or killed tonight. I hope they apprehend any remaining culprits quickly and the atrocities are finished.

Sadly as a Brit it takes me back to 7/7, and even beyond that to the many years of IRA bombings. Last month I visited the 9/11 memorial and museum in New York.

Unfortunately, there are always people who are willing to commit atrocities like these. They must NEVER win.

I hope this doesn't make France more insular but that's a conversation for another day. Right now, all I can think of to say is

Vive la France. We stand together.

Stay safe Mr and Mrs S.

From the Associated Press:

Twitter accounts linked to jihadists are celebrating the attacks in Paris.

According to the SITE Intelligence Group tracking militant sites, Twitter posts attributed to jihadist supporters are speculating which group may be responsible. Many users expressed belief that the Islamic Group could be behind the carnage.

They used Arabic-language hashtags that translated to "Paris on fire" and "Caliphate state strikes France."

SITE says that accounts also circulated pictures of the attacks, and one pro-IS channel accused France of sending warplanes to bomb Syria and says "today it drinks from the same cup."

:censored:ing animals I tell ya....

I'm so upset at what happened, but I'm furious at how they were just throwing grenades at hundreds of innocent people and executing them one by one.

I wonder how many still think that drinking tea and having talks with these lost souls will still work.
Its probably going to take mobs of angry citizen, country-wide protests, civil disobedience and more ugly things for a long period of time. Thats usually the only kind of voice of the people that can be heard and understood in the grand halls of EU politics.

For anyone who wants to follow this live without a news channel, try this. It's hard to confirm anything so take it all with a grain a salt.

Seems they haven't closed their borders, just planning to increase security.

Now Fox is reporting one the gunmen shouted, "What are you doing in Syria! Now you are going to pay for it!"

Embedded media from this media site is no longer available

A video showing how that explosion was like in the stadium. You can hear that everyone thought it's just fans using bangers.

Fox is now reporting SIX (6) attack sites.

Fox is also reporting a Twitter saying, "Just wait until the jihadis come with their cars!"
