No they should not. It's nature. A cat is driven to kill a mouse/bird. It's instinct.

Yes Taurine, only in america does come to mind.

A lion is driven to kill smaller, weaker animals. It's instinct.

Would YOU shoot one to stop it killing your friend?

Now, would you shoot a cat to protect your property/pets?

No. I'd club a Heron to death with a hedgehog impaled on a garden cane.
Good for you. But I hope someone clobbers you with a pick axe made from a herons beak.

Why would you shoot a cat when there are much more humane steps to controlling it? On the other hand a lion isn't so easy to restrain.

I'd never go as far as to kill a cat for anything. If it were to kill my bird (assuming that cat stays in your house) I would give it to animal control. It's instinct.

So aside from the elitist comments from the germans ( they have the French to hunt ) Whats the problem with controlling the problem with hunting ?
Don't make this a political discussion!

I think that cats should not be shot, cause who are we to decide which animals are useful and worth to keep them on "our" planet, and which to shoot because we don't like them. That's like patronizing nature.

ok, YES i would shoot a pesky cat in that situation. Although I would probably try the hedgehog impaled on a garden cane first to see if that gets my message across clearly.

EDIT: oh yeah, animal control. I take that back. but not the part about the hedgehog.

As far as cats killing field mice and birds and such that are not my property, NO, thats not reason enough to kill a cat.

"every time you basturmate, God kills a kitten." :D

Tranq dart...?

Tranq dart...?
In reference to restraining a Lion? First a tranq dart takes time to reload and second it takes time to take effect. By the time it does your 'mate' has probably lost his jugular.

P.s. All facts based on many wildlife shows.

Not many people have "more humane steps of controlling" a cat to hand.

A round across the back would stop it. Don't have to injure or kill it.

So, it's kind of akin to saying "I wouldn't shoot over a cat's head if it were attacking my pet Gular. I'd teleport it away with a Goa'uld ring device buried in my lawn."

You haven't actually GOT a Goa'uld ring device buried in your lawn. Or a lasso. Or a long pole with a net on it. Or even a dead hedgehog impaled on a garden cane. So you'd scare off a cat attacking your pet Gular... how?

(assuming you have a pet Gular, which you probably don't).

Best bet is a .410 shotgun with # 4 shot . BTW has anyone ever skined a cat ? do they make good pelts ?

Cats kill all kinds of stuff. They're very human like in that they will often kill just for pleasure and not eat their prey. People don't like that kind of thing.

So, all you cat owners. Do you have outdoor cats? Have you NEVER received a present from kitty on your doorstep - a mouse, vole or sparrow - in the morning?

Famine likes cats.
Right-o!

I do.

My dad has a cat. My next-door neighbours have four between them. I'm considering getting one myself. I even looked after the next-door neighbour's kitten when she had to go away for a week.

Isn't hunting sometimes used as a form of population control?

If feral cats are running rampant and endangering certian other species of animals that wouldn't normally be endangered, shouldn't we enact some sort of 'check and balance'?

Shouldn't we as humans, who have the ability to protect all species, do something about the problem we may very well have created?

Definetly if you have a ferral cat on the loose then yes it does need to be put to sleep because they cannot be used as pets.

Imagine how you would handle the situation of someone shooting your small child's pet.

Or your pet, for that matter.

See, that's the thing you're missing. These cats are nobodys pets. They are wild.

That's an interesting thought Blackbird. Why couldn't the cats be caught/trapped and then euthinised, instead of shot?

That's what I get for not reading the article. Lesson learned!

Well I've been known to shoot a cat before, with an airsoft gun mind you. I kept have this cat crawl on my nice clean truck and leaving foot prints. A couple of shots with the airsoft woke that cat up and it never happened again. Plus they were just plastic pellets so it didn't hurt em to bad.
